Historian Ed B. Moss Dies at 76 

Mt. Vernon's best known historian is dead at the age of 76. 
Eddie B. Moss, who could talk about the pioneer days of 
Jefferson county as if they had happened yesterday, died at 
12:40 p.m. Tuesday at Good Samaritan Hospital. 

Mr. Moss resided at 214 North 12th Street. 

During the 1920's he operated a grocery store in downtown Mt. 
Vernon. For many years after that he was a real estate dealer. 

Mr. Moss was a descendant of a pioneer Jefferson county family 
and, in early life, became an enthusiastic student if the 
county's history. 

He was an active member if the Jefferson County Historical Society 
and wrote many papers on the interesting early days of the 
Southern Illinois area. 

Mr. Moss was born December 25, 1894 in Jefferson county, the son 
of Walter Douglas and Mary Ellen (Coleman) Moss. 

On May 27, 1914, he was married, in Mt. Vernon, to Anna Leota 
Koons, who survives. 

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Myers 
Chapel. The Rev. Robert Freytag will officiate and burial will 
be in Oakwood cemetery. 

The body will lie in state at Myers Chapel, where friends may call 
after 5:00 p.m. Thursday. 

Besides his wife, he is survived by one son, Bob Ed Moss of Mt. 
Vernon; and three granddaughters, Jean Ellen Koike of Silver 
Spring, Md., Mary Jane Ohms of Washington, Il., and June Ann Moss 
of Mt. Vernon.
