Sampson McKowen
Sampson McKowen was born in South Carolina Dec. 3rd, 1843, and immigrated to
Richland county, Illinois in 1856, and died of consumption at his home 4 miles
northeast of Mt. Vernon March 12, 1898 aged 54 years, 3 mos., and 9 days.
He enlisted as a private to Company D, 91st regiment Indiana Volunteer Infantry, and
served as a Union soldier until the close of the war. He was married to Miss Artemisa Cargil
Oct. 13, 1868. To this union 4 children were born, one daughter dying when but one year old.
One daughter, Mrs. Harmon Miller of Mt. Vernon, two sons, John and Oscar, and the wife survive
to mourn their loss.
Bro. McKowen joined the Christian church and was baptized in 1862, but was not fully
satisfied religiously until a few weeks before his death, when he yielded himself fully to God
and died trusting in Jesus. The funeral occurred at Hopewell M. E. Church at 3 o'clock p.m.,
Saturday, March 12, Rev. J. C. Kinison officiating.
