M. Carthel McGehee

M. Carthel McGehee, 85, of Mt. Vernon, passed away at 8:45 a.m. Monday, Feb. 9, 2009, 
at St. Mary's Good Samaritan Hospital in Mt. Vernon. She was born in West Frankfort 
on Tuesday, Nov. 20, 1923, a daughter of Soloman Guy and Ethel (Bean) Brown. She married 
Homer McGehee on Nov. 16, 1939, in Mt. Vernon.

Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, at Wolfe Prairie Cemetery in 
Jefferson County with the Rev. Ted Anderson officiating. Interment will follow. Visitation 
will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Hughey Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon.

Carthel is survived by her husband, Homer McGehee of Mt. Vernon; son, Ron McGehee and wife 
Marilyn of Belle Rive; two daughters, Deloris Taylor and husband Dean of Mt. Vernon and 
Beverly Willard and husband Rod of Mt. Vernon; six grandchildren, Timothy McGehee of Belle Rive, 
Ronda Wilson of Woodlawn, Donna Reed of Illinois, Rick Pate of Mt. Vernon, Shawn Willard of 
Mt. Vernon and Christopher Willard of Mt. Vernon; two great-granddaughters, Brooke Chapman of 
McLeansboro and Sierra Waller of Mt. Vernon; two great-great-granddaughters, Jordyn and 
Jaci Chapman of McLeansboro; an expected great-great-grandson, Carter Waller; and several 
nieces and nephews.

Her parents, her six brothers, her sister and one granddaughter, Sherry Taylor preceded 
her in death.

Carthel was a member of Harlan Road Church of God in Mt. Vernon and was a nurse’s aide at 
Nature Trail Health Care Center in Mt. Vernon.
