Martha McCreery
Mrs. Martha McCreery, sister of Mrs. W. E. Jackson and
Mrs. L. E. Legge of this city, died of consumption at her home in
DuQuoin at 2 o'clock Saturday morning, aged sixty-three years
and twenty-five days. Mrs. Legge went to DuQuoin about a week
ago and was at the bedside of her sister when she breathed her last.
Mrs. W. E. Jackson left this morning to attend the funeral, which
occurred this afternoon. In speaking of the deceased the DuQuoin Call
says: "Mrs. McCreery was born in Franklin county, Ill., April 27, 1834.
She was married to William McCreery on the 9th day of March, 1853.
Their union was crowned with seven children; six girls and one boy. Three
of the children died in early life. Four of the daughters still survive.
Mrs. McCreery came with her husband to DuQuoin in 1869. Soon thereafter,
Mr. McCreery died, leaving her a widow with four daughters to care for.
She made a profession of religion in early life and joined the M.E. church.
Her Christianity sustained her even to the end, as she said just before her
death that she was going to die and that she was going to heaven.
