Dudley McCANN: Aged Pioneer Passes Away 

Dudley McCann, 84 years old, a resident of Clark county,
Wash., since 1864, died Thursday evening at the home of 
his son, at Kelso, Wash. His death was due to infirmities 
incident to old age. Mr McCann was born at Mt. Vernon, Ill.,
Jan 1, 1828. Aug. 14, 1855 he was married to Miss Johanna Smith,
sister of Benjamin Smith of Spring Garden township, this county. 
In the spring of 1864 with an ox team he crossed the plains
to Washington and located at Hockinson, Clark county. He is 
survived by seven children, thirty-four grandchildren and 22
great grandchildren. Mr. McCann was a well informed man. 
He was a Democrat and well posted on political events of
history as well as other matters. He was a member of the 
Baptist church.

Dudley McCann


A dispatch from Vancouver, Wash., of August 10 date, tells of the death of a former 
resident and pioneer of Jefferson County.  Dudley McCANN, 84 years old and a resident of 
Clarke County since 1864, died Thursday evening at the home of his son, D. O. McCANN, at 
Kelso, Wash., of infirmities incident to old age.

Mr. McCANN was born at Mt. Vernon, IL, January 1, 1828.  August 14, 1855, he was united 
in marriage with Miss Johanna SMITH.  In the spring of 1864, with an ox team, he crossed 
the plains to Washington, and located at Hockinson, Clarke County.  He had been a 
constant reader of the Oregon Journal since its first publication, 10 years ago.

Mr. McCANN is survived by 7 children; J. T. McCANN of California; Mrs. P. H. HARPER of 
WIlliams, Ore.; Mrs. G. A. HENDRICKSON of Vancouver; W. H. McCANN of LaConter, Wash.; 
Mrs. John CHAPIN of Seattle; Mrs. S. C. LAPHAM of Portland, Ore; Mrs. John HARVEY of 
Vancouver, and D. O. McCANN of Kelso, Wash.  He is also survived by 34 grandchildren and 
22 great-grandchildren.

A family reunion was held last winter at the home of his daughter, Mrs. John HARVEY, in 
this city, and was attended by a large number of children, grandchildren and 
great-grandchildren.  Mr. McCANN related to his descendants some of his life history, and 
the incident which pleased him most was his recollection of a debate between Stephen A. 
DOUGLAS and Abraham LINCOLN which he heard in 1858 at Mt. Vernon, when the men were 
holding debates over Illinois in the interest of candidates to the state legislature 
which would elect a United States senator, both being candidates for the office.  Mr. 
McCANN was a great admirer of Douglas.  He was a man of fine information and well posted 
on political events of history, as well as other matters.  He was a democrat and a member 
of the Baptist Church.  

The funeral will be held at 2 o'clock Sunday afternoon from the First Baptist Church, 
Rev. C. R. G. POOLE officiating.  Interment will be made in the city cemetery.
