Winfield S. Marlow

W. S. Marlow Dies at Age 89; Rites Tuesday

Respected Oakdale Community Resident Could Recall Civil War Days

Winfield S. Marlow, one of Jefferson county's oldest and most highly 
respected citizens, died at the family home north of Bluford at 8;15 
p.m. Saturday.  His age was 89 years, six months and 21 days.

Death resulted from a stroke of paralysis he suffered on May 5, 1940.

Funeral services will be held at Oakdale Tuesday at 2 p.m.  The body 
was taken from the Keenes Funeral Home today to the family home, where 
it will lie in state until the funeral hour.

Mr. Marlow was the son of Abram and Elvira Warren Marlow, members of a 
respected Jefferson county pioneer family.

He was born at Marlow April 16, 1853, where he grew to manhood.  He was 
the eldest son of a large family and was the last member to survive.

On February 15, 1883 he was married to Almeda Summers, a school teacher 
in the Marlow vicinity.  They settled on their farm in Oakdale 
community, where they lived the remainder of their lives and where Mrs. 
Marlow died Nov 8, 1938.

They were the parents of two sons and three daughters, Thomas of 
Portland, Ore., Blaine of Mt. Vernon, Cora of Springfield, Grace and 
Mrs. Florence Case of Bluford.  They are also survived by seven 
grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Mr. marlow was known and respsected for his upright character and 
industry.  He had an intelligent mind and was well versed in the 
affairs of the day.

Mr. Marlow had an excellent memory and could tell of many interesting 
incidents of earlier days.  He could recall incidents of the Civil War 
during his early boyhood, when his father was in the Union Army.
