Leona Lloyd Mannen

Leona Lloyd Mannen, known to her friends as Nonie, age 88, of Mt. Vernon, 
died at 7:19 a.m. Friday, June 20, 2008, in Mt. Vernon.

Leona was born April 13, 1920, in Mt. Vernon, the daughter of Owen Glen 
and Alice (Alexander) Rutherford. She married Merritte H. Mannen on 
August 3, 1940, in Morganfield, Kentucky. He survives in Mt. Vernon. 

Leona became a member of the First United Methodist Church in Mt. Vernon 
on April 20, 1930, one week after her 10th birthday. She worked as a 
telephone operator for Illinois Bell and later as a bookkeeper for what 
is now US Bank. She graduated from Mt. Vernon Township High School in 1938, 
where she was prom queen, a member of the National Honor Society, and an oboist 
in the band and orchestra. 

Leona is survived by her husband, Merritte Mannen, of Mt.Vernon; one son, 
Ted Rutherford Mannen and wife Elaine, of Alexandria, Virginia; one brother-in-law, 
Leland R. Mannen and wife Patricia of Indianapolis, Indiana; and two grandchildren, 
Claire Rutherford Mannen, a student at St. Petersburg State University, St. Petersburg, 
Russia, and William Bays Mannen, a student at Trinity College, Hartford, Connecticut. 
She was preceded in death by six brothers and two sisters.

A private interment service will be held on Thursday, June 26, 2008, at Oakwood 
Cemetery in Mt. Vernon. Rev David Eadie, Pastor of the First United Methodist Church, 
will officiate. 

For those wishing, in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Angels on 
Assignment in memory of Leona and will be accepted at the funeral home.
