DEATH OF MRS. J. F. MAHAFFY 

Although it was generally known that she was seriously ill the 
community was greatly shocked this afternoon by the announcement 
of the death of Mrs. J. F. Mahaffy, which occurred at 1:35, of heart 
failure, after an illness of several weeks duration. 

Her maiden name was Harriet A. Jackson and she was born at Greenville, 
East Tennessee, Aug. 22, 1856, and of her immediate family two sisters 
and one brother survive her. Of the former Mrs. Sallie Satterfield lives 
at Red Bud, Ill. and Mrs. Etta Williamson is a resident of her native city, 
Greenville, Tenn. Her brother, Charles D. Jackson, of St. Louis, is an 
engineer on the government dredge, Gen. Gilmore, plying on the Mississippi 
river and its lower triburaries. 

When 17 years old Mrs. Mahaffy removed to St. Louis and was shortly 
after married to John J. Gimore, who died April 17, 1891. Of this union 
two children were born, Wilbur and John G. Gilmore, Jr., the latter of 
whom died October 18, 1889. On March 28, 1893 she was married to J. F. 
Mahaffy of St. Louis and on the next day they came to Mt. Vernon and at 
once arranged to open a hotel in the Thomas Walsh property on South 
Washington street. 

Arrangements for the obsequies have not been definitely decided, but 
the funeral will probably take place at her late home at 10 o'clock 
Saturday morning. The interment will be in Oakwood cemetery. Mrs. 
R. F. Mahaffy and Miss Lou Mahaffy of St. Louis were both at the beside 
when she died and lent the bereaved family all the assistance in their 
hour of trial.
