Fred Justice Sr.


FRED JUSTICE SR., 90, 1500 Viola Avenue, a well-known historian of Jefferson County 
died at 4:35 a.m. today in Good Samaritan Hospital. He was a 30 year employee of 
the Mt. Vernon Post Office before his retirement in 1964.

Mr. Justice, known for his genealogy research of Jefferson County, was born in 
Mt. Vernon February 28, 1894, the son of William and Fannie (COOK) Justice. On 
June 14, 1919, he married Grace M. Tucker, who died September 19, 1960.

Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Hughey Funeral Home with 
the Rev. William Causer officiating.  Burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery. Friends 
may call after 6 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Survivors include one son, Fred Justice, Jr. and his wife, Betty, of Mt. Vernon; six 
grandchildren, Mrs. Richard (Janet) GARRETSON, John, James, Jeffrey and Jay Justice and 
Jill RICHARDSON; seven great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Justice compiled several volumes of genealogical data, known as the Fred Justice 
Collection, which are in the C. E. Brehm Memorial Library.  He had just completed a book 
on burials in Jefferson County.

A member of the Jefferson County Historical Society and the Mt. Vernon Genealogical Society, 
he had been honored by these organizations and the Illinois Genealogical Society.

Mr. Justice was an Army veteran of World War I.  He was a member of the First Community 
Church in Mt. Vernon, and he was preceded in death by his parents and one great-granddaughter.
