James K. Jones

James K. JONES, died of a complication of troubles superinduced by 
Bright's disease, at his home on Maple street, aged 81 years, 4 months 
and 14 days. 

He was born in Virginia August 14, 1816, but came west with his parents 
when a young man and settled in Indiana where he received his education 
and laid the foundation for that energy and thrift which characterized his later life. 
He removed to Illinois in 1864 and settled in Jefferson county, where he engaged 
in farming which he followed with success for some time. He built and for several 
years operated the Opdyke mills, when he rented the property and retired from 
business. He afterwards assumed the management of his milling interests, which 
he conducted for four years when he sold out and came to Mt. Vernon where he 
has since resided. 

He was thrice married. His first wife, Hannah S. KELLER, was a native of Jennings 
county, Ind., and died in this county in 1872. She was the mother of the following 
children: Isabella STONEMETZ, Mary STRATTAN, Jesse D. and Frederick C. 
JONES and Virginia KLINE. The second Mrs. JONES maiden name was Hannah 
A. MONTGOMERY. She was a native of Ohio but was reared in Indiana. She died 
in June, 1891, and in September of the following year he was married to Mary 
KENNEDY, who survives him.
 
Funeral services will be held at the First M. E. church at 9 o'clock tomorrow morning, 
and the remains will be taken to Opdyke, on the 10:47 L & N train, for interment. 
The funeral will be under the direction of Mt. Vernon lodge No. 31, A. F. & A. M. 
Deceased was a very successful business man and leaves a large estate. He was a 
member of the First M.E. church of this city. He was also a member of Mt. Vernon 
lodge No. 31 A F & A M. In politics he was a Democrat.
