Elizabeth A. (Clampet) Jones & Martha Dougherty
Mrs. Martha Dougherty, wife of Jno. Dougherty, and Mrs. Elizabeth
Jones, both of Oakland, departed from this sublunary world to try the
realities of one unknown, last Sunday. Mrs. Dougherty died at 3 o'clock a.m.
and Mrs. Jones six hours later. The former had been sick for many
days, her illness being of long and painful duration. She leaves five
children, her husband and a sympathizing community to mourn her death. Mrs.
Dougherty had long been a member of the Missionary Baptist church, one
mile south of here, where the funeral services were conducted by Elder
Hooker, on Monday at 11 a.m. Mrs. Jones' death is a severe blow to her
family of three girls and two boys who were living with her, and they
are now destitute of home parentage. She was the mother of a large
family, all of whom were present, except her son George, who is in Kansas,
and telegrams failed to reach him. Isaac, who lives in Colorado,
reached here before his mother died. Mrs. Jones was a member of the Close
Communion Baptist church, having joined that church in her single days,
and lived by it the remainder of her life. Funeral services were held
at Union church on Monday at 11 a.m. She leaves many relatives and a
host of friends to mourn her death.
