The Senate Bill Number 6341 was approved on 14 February 1855 changing the name of Berrien to Kewannee. (spelled with 2 n’s) The document bears the signature of Governor J. A. Mattison and is written in long hand. The document was reported located in a steel vault at the office of Secretary of State L. L. Emmerson. (4 August 1917– Kewanee Daily Star Courier) The village was originally laid out in June of 1854 by Sullivan Howard, Nelson Lay. Henry G. Little, Ralph A. Tenney and Sylvester Blish. In 1876 these men were all still living with the exception of Sylvester Blish.
