VOLKERT, ROGERTOWN During the 30's and 40's my father lived in a small community of houses built by a mining company. It was nicknamed Rogertown. It was situated about a mile east of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, on the highway to Elizabethtown and Rosiclare. As of the late 1970's, some remnants of the houses were still standing, but by the mid-1980's all that remained was part of the main gravel road, that was converted to part of the driveway to a new house. Any information about the area and anyone who lived there would be greatly appreciated.

A search of this site netted this:. Among the first physicians who ever practiced in Cave-in-Rock was a Dr. BINKLEY, who bought 80 acres out at the sinks and deadened the timber, but never cultivated the land. He later went to Shawneetown and then to Chicago where he died. I believe that this is John Thomas BINKLEY, who was born in TN in 1829. He married Rachel RYAN in Nashville, Davidson Co., TN, 23 May 1854. He appears in the 1860 Hardin Co. census in Cave-in-the-Rock, but no family is shown with him. Does anyone recognize these HUFFORDs? "Hannah Catherine HUFFORD was born Dec. 25, 1846, of the union of Betsy PATTERSON and mother Betsy was of French heritage. Abram was from Virginia, and was of Pennsylvania-Dutch and German stock." "His marriage to Betsy was his second. From his earlier marriage Abram HUFFORD had two boys, John Quinn HUFFORD and Nathan Carey HUFFORD, half brothers to Hannah. Abram HUFFORD died of "Pneumonia fever" before his daughter Hannah was born. He died and was buried in Hardin County, Ill. Betsy PATTERSON died two weeks after the birth of her daughter, Hannah, Betsy's only child. Betsy, too was buried in Hardin Co., Ill." "Hannah lived for a time with her "Grandma" and "Grandpa" HUFFORD and then was taken to live with an Aunt Martha ENGLISH (who had a daughter by the name of Flora and for whom Hannah named her second daughter, Flora Anna Davis ) Hannah was brought up by her Aunt Martha." "After marriage in 1866, Isaac and Hannah farmed near Rosiclaire, Hardin Co., Ill, and Isaac also plied his trade as a cooper. In Illinois, three children were born to the couple, John Decall (May 17, 1868 - Jan 4, 1872), Laura Alice (Addie-) (Feb 14, 1870 - Apr. 27,.1937) and Jessie Parin or Perron (May 31, 1872 - Jan. 3, 1873). Upon the deaths of John and Jessie from "croup" during the winters of 1872 and 1873, the couple decided to leave Illinois and follow the footsteps of friends and neighbors who were pushing a "bit" farther west. Also the U.S. Government was giving the Civil War veterans land in Kansas to homestead. So, with the one child, Laura Alice "Addie". the move was made in 1873 to Kansas by mules and wagon with Hannah riding on the "jockey box" on the front of the wagon (this box housed the corn to feed the mules). Charlie Jackson, his wife Mary (Isaac's half sister) and their family also made the trip." "Charlie Jackson was not only and in-law but a friend and neighbor in Illinois." UPDATE There is, in 1840's, an Abraham HURFORD owning property next to Isaac's uncle in T12S, R08E, sect 12. I believe this is the Abram HUFFORD referred to above as Hannah's father.
