Thomas Jefferson Douglas (1922)

Hardin County Independent

CAVE-IN-ROCK, Ill. (Nov. 16, 1922) — The subject of this sketch was the son of Thomas Jefferson and Sarah Douglas, the yougest of eight children.

He was born 16 October 1875, departed this life Oct. 27, 1922 being 47 years 11 days old. He was married to Nora McDowell April 18th, 1897. To this union were born nine children, all of whom are living. They are: Wayne, Marie, Sallie Edwards, Clyde, Hansel, Quenton, Eugene, Eula, Marie and Nora.

Besides his loving companion, nine children, a little grand daughter, aged mother, and four sisters, there are a host of other relatives and friends whose hearts are sad because of the untimely death of their loved one.

Thomas was well-known over the county as one of its foremost farmers. He will be greatly missed by all, but the loss to his broken hearted family and dear old mother is irreparable.

Funeral services were conducted the following Sunday monring in the grove of the Christian Church of Cave-in-Rock by Rev. M.F. Oxford. All the churches being too small to accomodate the large crowd.

This alone is evidence of the high esteem in which he was held.

The funeral procession ws estimated as being about a mile in length and was made up of people of all parts of the county. After the splendid discourse by Rev. Oxford, the IOOF took possession and admininstered their usual burial rites after which all that was mortal of him was placed in the New Masonic Cemetery.

To the heartbroken family. I would say, look to him who doeth all things well. For he has promised never to forsake us in times of trouble, nor suffer us to carry a burdens greater than we are able to bear.

A Relative
