5 Jan 1901

James L. Sanders died 9 Dec 1900, of pneumonia, at his home near Lawrence, Kan., aged 66

years.  He moved to Kansas three years ago.  He left a widow, two daughters, and one son.  He was a county commissioner in Alexander County and lived in East Cape Girardeau Precinct.

Silas Hess died 31 Dec 1900, at his home five miles east of Anna, aged 74 years, 10 months, 7

days, and was buried in Anna Cemetery.  He was born in Union County in 1826.  He married Mary Hileman.  They had eight children, seven of whom survived him and lived in Union County:  Lafayette Hess, Jasper L. Hess, George W. Hess, John W. Hess, Mrs. William Boswell, Mrs. David Rendleman, and Mrs. Jeff Stokes.  One son, Frank Hess, died several years ago.

Mr. Dilender died Monday (31 Jan 1900) at Cobden.  He left a wife, two daughters, and two sons.

12 Jan 1901:

Elmore Vitt died 7 Jan 1901, at the home of his father at Cobden, aged 14 years, 4 months, 7 days.  He

was Catholic.

Dr. A.C. Brookings died last Sunday (6 Jan 1901) at DuQuoin.

John M. Casper died 3 Jan 1901, three and a half miles east of Cobden, aged 52 years, 11 months, 3 days,

and was buried in John Rich Cemetery.  He left a widow and a large family.

Jonathon A. Peery died Tuesday night (8 Jan 1901) at his home near Reynoldsville of pneumonia, aged

47 years.  He was from Jefferson County, where his father was a man of considerable wealth.  He was a brother of Richard Peery of Jonesboro.  He left a widow and several children.

Herbert Caster died last Monday (7 Jan 1901) at his home in the southern part of the county, aged 23

years, and was buried in St. John’s Cemetery.

19 Jan 1901:

John M. Grieb died 15 Jan 1901, at his home in Jonesboro, aged 64 years, 9 months, 24 days, and was

buried in the family cemetery.  His funeral was at Kornthal Church.  He was born in Germany and came to the U.S. when 17.  He lived in St. Louis and Cape Girardeau before settling south of Jonesboro, where he lived over 40 years.  He married Mary Gattinger.  In 1875 he moved to Jonesboro.  He left two sisters in Germany, one sister in St. Louis, one brother in Cape Girardeau, a widow, two sons, Henry Grieb and Charles Grieb; and one daughter, Mrs. Rosa Ditter.  The youngest son, Ernest Grieb, died a few years ago.

Richard Landon died 10 Jan 1901, at his home in Indian Territory.  He was formerly of Anna and was

the father of Mrs. Samuel Abernathie of north of Anna.

Mrs. Andre Thomas died 11 Jan 1901, at her home in Cobden, aged 60 years, and was buried in

Cobden Cemetery.

Minnie J. Owens, wife of Edward H. Owens, died 13 Jan 1901, at the home of her father, Warren Hoyt,

in Cobden, aged 27 years and 5 days.

26 Jan 1901:

Ralph Raymond Howell died 15 Jan 1901, of pneumonia, aged 17 years, 1 month.  He was the son of

John U. and Nancy A. Howell, of three miles northeast of Carbondale.  His was the first of nine children to die.  He was a brother of D.H. Howell of Hodges Park School, Alexander County and E.T. Powell of DeSoto, Jackson County.  He was a nephew of Ms. George C. Bankston  of Mill Creek.

Infant son of J.E.N. Edwards died 19 Jan 1901, aged 28 hours, and was buried in Anna Cemetery.

Mrs. Josephine Zimmerman, died last week at the home of her son west of Alto Pass.  She was a

member of the Congregational Church.

2 Feb 1901:

James Roberts, an old soldier living on C.M. Miller’s farm north of Anna, died last week and was buried

in Casper Cemetery.  He left several small children.  His wife died three months ago.

9 Feb 1901:

Son of Walter Knupp died Tuesday (5 Feb 1901) of scarlet fever, aged 3 years.

Charles Barringer died 6 Feb 1901, of senile gangrene, aged 75 years, 4 months, 5 days, and was buried

in Jonesboro Cemetery.  He was a Mason.  He was born 29 Sep 1825, on a farm north of Anna, the oldest of seven children.  His grandfather, Henry Barringer, came to Union County early.  His parents were Daniel Barringer and Elizabeth Treese.  He was in John S. Hacker’s company in the Mexican War and was a 2^nd lieutenant in the Civil War.  He received a small pension.  He lived in Jonesboro 49 years and was a charter member and elder of the Lutheran Church.   He married on 5 Mar 1848, Matilda Hileman, the daughter of Christian and Nancy Hileman, who died in May 1897.  He had six children, three of whom died in infancy.  Surviving children were George Barringer of Jonesboro, Mrs. Nannie C. Jones of Riversdale, Calif., and Mrs. Phena Morrell of Sumpter, Ore.  A granddaughter was married to Charles Walker.  (See also the 16 Feb 1901, issue.)

Will Kirkpatrick died Wednesday evening (6 Feb 1901) at his home in Edwardsville.  He was a

musician and formerly of Jonesboro.

John Boyer died Friday (1 Feb 1901) in Anna and was buried in Casper Cemetery.

Donald Berger, son of the Rev. A.J. Berger, died Friday (1 Feb 1901) of la grippe, at Champaign, where

he was attending university.

16 Feb 1901:

Mrs. John McKinney died last Tuesday (12 Feb 1901) at his home on S.W. Cook’s farm south of

Jonesboro of quick consumption, and was buried in Alto Pass Cemetery.  She left a husband and three children.

Hon. Samuel M. Glassford died last Friday (8 Feb 1901) aged 75 years.  He was one of the wealthiest

men in Johnson County and was the father of Mrs. T.B. Williams of Jonesboro.

Son of J.M. Harper of north of Anna died Saturday (9 Feb 1901) of spinal meningitis, and was buried in

Casper Cemetery.

Beatrice Hileman, adopted daughter of George Hileman, died 8 Feb 1901, of scarlet fever, and was

buried in Anna Cemetery.

Mrs. Annie Sabin, wife of Dr. S.A. Sabine, died 12 Feb 1901, at Anna, aged about 55 years, and was

buried in Troy, Ill.  She left a husband and two children.

Mrs. Richards, a saloon keeper in Carterville, Williamson County, was killed last Friday (8 Feb 1901) by

a revolver by Roy McGowan while dining at James McGowan’s.  Roy and James, brothers, were formerly of Jonesboro.  Roy was engaged to the woman, but she had refused to marry him.

23 Feb 1901:

Judge Jesse J. Phillips died Saturday (16 Feb 1901) at home in Hillsboro of hardening of the liver.  He

was born in 1837 in Montgomery County, graduated from Hillsboro Academy in 1857, and was admitted to the bar in 1861.  He was lieutenant colonel of the 9^th Illinois.

Infant child of W.F. James was buried last week.

Margaret Smith, wife of Mike Smith, died last Saturday (16 Feb 1901) and was buried in Alto Pass

Cemetery.  She was a member of the Baptist Church.  She left a husband and a large family of children and grandchildren.

Dr. Lawrence of Mill Creek died in Jonesboro, Ark., of pneumonia and grippe, aged 74 years.  His body

was brought back to Union County for burial.

2 Mar 1901:

Col. A.W. Rogers died 26 Feb 1901, at Warrensburg, Mo., aged 76 years.  He was colonel of the 81^st and

a member of the Johnson Co., Mo., bar since 1865.

Levi Rieseling died recently in Joplin, Mo.  He left an estate worth $700,000 to Mrs. Henry Nausly of

Carbondale, Jackson County, and to her brothers and sisters.

Loraine Walton, oldest daughter of W.D. Walton, died 23 Feb 1901, at home in Ware, aged 3 years, 10

months, and 5 days, and was buried in Anna Cemetery.  Her funeral was at the home of Mrs. Walton parents, Mr. and Mrs. A.D. Bush.

Eli Keller died 28 Feb 1901, at home four miles south of Jonesboro of grippe and pneumonia, aged about

50 years.  He was born in Union County and married Ellen Brown 20 years ago.  He left a widow, several sons and daughters.  Jackson Keller, his only brother, was killed by being thrown from a wagon several months ago.

Alfred Sturge died 26 Jan 1901, at Dartford, England, aged 84 years.  He was the father of Alfred Sturge.

Irene Jones, wife of N.G. Jones, died 27 Feb 1901, aged 39 years, 1 month, 28 days, and was buried in

Jonesboro Cemetery.  She was the daughter of Joseph Hunsaker.  She was a member of the Lutheran Church.  She left four children, Frank Jones, Lora, Helen, and Monte Jones, all of whom were grown, except the last; and three sisters.  She was a member of the Margaret R.D. Lodge No. 129 I.O.O.F.  (See also 9 Mar 1901, issue.)

Mrs. Eliza Cook died 25 Feb 1901, at the home of George Sexaur, her relative, north of Anna, aged 21

years, and was buried in Alto Pass Cemetery.  She left several children in Kentucky.

Calvin Logan died 23 Feb 1901, of pneumonia.  He left a wife and several children.

Nancy Jane Vancil, wife of Marshall Vancil, died yesterday at home one and a half miles east of Cobden

of chronic throat, aged 49 years, 9 months, 17 days.  She left a husband and six children. 

Fanny (Maples) Maxey, wife of John D. Maxey, died recently at home in Los Angeles, Calif., of

pneumonia, aged 36 years.  She and her husband once worked at the Anna hospital. 

9 Mar 1901:

Miss Polly Lipe died last Sunday (3 Mar 1901) at T.J. McKinney’s, aged lady, and was buried at Dutch

Ridge Cemetery.

Charles O. Patier, of Cairo, Alexander County, died there last Friday (1 Mar 1901).

Jacob Grear died 2 Mar 1901, of stroke of paralysis, aged 74 years, 5 months, and 4 days, and was buried

in Jonesboro Cemetery.  He was a cooper and justice of the peace for 42 consecutive years.  He was in Col. Bissel’s regiment in the Mexican War and was pensioned.  He married Rebecca Wimpey.  The death of an old friend, Charles Barringer, affected him deeply.  He left a widow, an aged brother, John Grear; four children, Judson Grear, Frank Grear, Watson Grear, and Roy Grear, all living near Jonesboro; and 14 grandchildren.  His funeral was in the Baptist church.  (See also 23 Feb 1901, issue.)

Maggie Chester, daughter of Mrs. Georgia Lee, died 6 Mar 1901, in Jonesboro, of consumption, aged 19

years, and was buried in McClure Cemetery southwest of Jonesboro.

16 Mar 1901:

John Musselman died 11 Mar 1901, at his home in Jonesboro, of pneumonia, aged 32 years, 1 month, 10

days, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery.  He left a widow, two small children, a mother, two brothers, and one sister.

Lucy Willard, wife of W.H. Willard, died 12 Mar 1901, at her home in Anna, of apoplexy, aged 70

years, and was buried in Anna Cemetery.  She left several sons and daughters.

Mrs. Lovina Johnson died 10 Mar 1901, at her home in Cobden, aged 47 years, 10 months, 19 days, and

was buried in Casper Cemetery.

23 Mar 1901:

Robert Miner, an old soldier, was found dead last Saturday (16 Mar 1901) in the woods near Ellis school

house north of Anna, aged near 60 years, and was buried in Anna Cemetery.  He was married 19 Feb 1901, to Mrs. Jane Elmore, of Anna, but they were not living together.  He drew a pension of $14 a month.

James Freeman died last Saturday (16 Mar 1901) after being struck by a passenger train just south of

Anna Station, aged 72 years, and was buried beside his wife in Anna Cemetery.

Lydia Brown, wife of Nathan Brown, died 16 Mar 1901, at her home in Anna, of pneumonia, aged 74

years, 4 months, 17 days, and was buried in McClure Cemetery near her old home.  She married 1^st John P. MClure and had five children, three living:  Mrs. L. Rendleman of Murphysboro, Jackson County, Mrs. L.H. Cook, and Mrs. Alice McClure, of Anna.  She married Nathan Brown, who survives.  She joined the Baptist Church over 50 years ago.  She also left four grandchildren, a husband, and one sister, Mrs. Paul Frick, of Jonesboro, who is 84 years old.

30 Mar 1901:

W.S. Milam died 25 Mar 1901, aged 30 years, 6 months, 27 days, and was buried in Alto Pass Cemetery. 

He joined the Baptist Church a few years ago.  He left a wife, two small children, a mother, and several brothers and sisters.

Otis Hutchinson, from Williamson County, died last Saturday (23 Mar 1901) on John Hileman’s farm

south of Jonesboro, aged 24 years, and unmarried.

Infant child of P.J. Johnson died Thursday (28 Mar 1901) of small pox in Anna.

Infant son of A. Murray died 26 Mar 1901, aged 1 month, and was buried in Anna Cemetery.

Mrs. Ellen Dovie died last Friday (22 Mar 1901) in Cairo, Alexander County, aged about 60 years, and

was buried in the Catholic cemetery in Villa Ridge, Pulaski County.  She was formerly of Anna.

6 Apr 1901:

Miss Myrtle Lewis, cousin of I.W. Lewis of Alto Pass, died recently, aged 18 years.  Her funeral was in

Pulaski.

Hubert Eddleman, son of Wesley Eddleman, died 2 Apr 1901, of small pox at his parents’ home near

Dongola, aged 21 years.  His father was also sick with small pox.  His funeral was at St. John’s Church.  (See also 18 May 1901, issue.)

Robert Rendleman died 28 Mar 1901, in Hot Springs, Ark., of consumption, aged 43 years, and was

buried in Cobden Cemetery.  He was the son of the late J.S. and Eliza Rendleman and was born in Union County.  He went to Hot Springs about 15 years ago.  He left a wife and one child.  He was a member of the Methodist Episcopal church.

William Tippy died Friday last week (29 Mar 1901) of erysipelas, aged 39 years, and was buried in

Bankston Cemetery near Mill Creek.  He was formerly of Jonesboro.

William J. Allen died.  He was born 2 Jun 1828, in Wilson Co., Tenn., son of Willis Allen.  He settled in

Franklin County, then moved to Marion, Williamson County.  He studied in seminary under Benajah G. Root and left to study law with his father.  In 1847 he entered the University of Kentucky and was graduated in 1848 with a bachelor of law degree.  In 1854 he was elected state legislator and appointed U.S. deputy attorney by President Franklin Pierce.  He was a member of the 1862 Illinois constitutional convention and replaced John A. Logan in the U.S. House of Representatives when he resigned to raise a regiment.

Infant of Mr. Zipper died Sunday (31 Mar 1901) on D.W. Brown’s farm north of Anna, of small pox,

and was buried in Anna Cemetery.

20 Apr 1901:

Francis Marion Simpson, of Vienna, Johnson County, died there last Sunday (14 Apr 1901), aged 63

years.  He was born in Vienna, Johnson County.

27 Apr 1901:

Com. Lilly died Wednesday (24 Apr 1901) in the Bottoms and was buried in Alto Pass.  He was married.

Al G. Oliver, from Vienna, Johnson County, committed suicide Wednesday (24 Apr 1901) in the St.

Charles Hotel in Anna by drinking evanide potassium, aged about 35 years, and was buried in Johnson County.  He was the youngest son of James F. Oliver.

Child of Francis Sitter died Monday (22 Apr 1901) six miles east of Anna, of scarlet fever, aged 2 years,

and was buried in Casper Cemetery.

4 May 1901:

George Lehr of Makanda, Jackson County, was struck by an Illinois Central train on a trestle four miles

north of Cobden, aged about 69 years.   He was walking with his father-in-law from Makanda to Cobden.

Child of Dave Goddard died last Thursday (2 May 1901) of scarlet fever.

Mrs. Sarah Halterman died 28 Apr 1901, at the home of her son-in-law, J.E. Boswell, aged 65 years, 8

months, 18 days, and was buried in Campground Cemetery.

Andrew W. Smith died 20 Apr 1901, at his home five miles west of Alto Pass, aged 78 years, and was

buried in Lyerla Cemnetery.  He was born in Union County.  He was a member of Mt. Tabor Missionary Baptist Church before joining Beech Grove Free Baptist Church.  He left an aged widow, one daughter, one son, and two brothers, David Smith and Charles Smith.

11 May 1901:

John Gibson, of DuQuoin, Perry County, died recently.  He was a relative of Richard Ferguson of Alto

Pass.

Harmon R. Fox, ex sheriff of Jackson County, died Thursday last week (2 May 1901).

A rider in Buckskin Bill’s show had his horse fall on him Wednesday (8 May 1901) at Mound City,

Pulaski County and broke his neck.

18 May 1901:

Mrs. Margaret Poole, wife of George W. Poole, died 10 May 1901, at her home a few miles south of

Jonesboro, aged 55 years, 3 months, 2 days, and was buried in St. John’s Cemetery.  She was born in Union County, the daughter of John and Elizabeth Misenhimer.  She married in 1864 and had seven children, six of whom were living.  She also her parents and left two brothers.  She was a member of St. John’s Church.

Little son of John Boyd drowned Sunday (12 May 1901) in a spring at the parents’ home northwest of

Anna, aged 2 ½ years, and was buried in Anna Cemetery.

25 May 1901:

Mrs. Mollie Casey died 21 May 1901, at her home on Main Street in Anna, of consumption, aged 51

years, and was buried in Anna Cemetery.  She was born in Tennessee in 1850 and married Milbourn Casey in 1867.  She was a member of the Rebecca Lodge.  She left a husband, three sons, and one daughter.  Four other children died when quite young.  She was converted at age 11 and was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church.

Ada Emma Cozby, daughter of Henry P. Cozby, died Wednesday (22 May 1901) suddenly in Perry B.

Turner’s strawberry field west of Jonesboro, of effusion of blood at the base of the brain, aged 16 years, 4 months, 21 days, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery.  She was born in Jonesboro.

1 Jun 1901:

Elvira A. Elms, wife of Randolph C. Elms died 25 May 1901, at Willard’s Landing, aged 39 years, 9

months, 3 days.  She was born 22 Aug 1882, at Murphysboro, Jackson County.  She had three children, two of whom were living.

W.J. Barrow died Wednesday (29 May 1901), of grippe, heart trouble, and dropsy, aged 70 years,  and

was buried in Alto Pass Cemetery.  He was born in Campbell Hill and came to Union County in 1873 and a few years later to Alto Pass.  He was a school teacher and a member of the Christian church.  He left a wife, three daughters, Mrs. C. Jessen, Mrs. Silas Spann, and Miss Mamie Barrow; and two sons, Albert Barrow of Alto Pass and Charlie Barrow of Chicago.  (See also 8 Jun 1901, issue.)

8 Jun 1901:

Mrs. Ralls, a young woman, died 30 May 1901, on C.M. Miller’s farm of consumption and was buried in

Anna Cemetery.

Mrs. Sumner died Sunday (2 Jun 1901) on Bell Hill in Cobden and was buried in Rich Cemetery.

Mary (Anderson) Loomis, wife of Walter Loomis, died 31 May 1901, at her home southeast of Makanda

and was buried in First Baptist Church Cemetery at Makanda.  She was the daughter of N.H. Anderson of Cobden.

15 Jun 1901:

Frank P. James died Monday (10 Jun 1901), of peritonitis, aged 48 years, 4 months, 17 days, and was

buried in Alto Pass Cemetery.  He was the head manager of James Bros. Flouring Mill.  He left a wife, stepdaughter, several grandchildren, and one brother, George James.

Mr. Copeland of Dongola was found dead in his bed from heart disease last Saturday (8 Jun 1901).

Abbie Davis, daughter of James Davis, died 9 Jun 1901, and was buried in Rich Cemetery.

Percy Parks died 11 Jun 1906, at the home of his father, George C. Parks, on Main Street in Anna, of

diphtheria, aged 7 years, and was buried in Anna Cemetery.

22 Jun 1901:

Infant child of William Ferrill died last Tuesday (18 Jun 1901) west of Jonesboro.

29 Jun 1901:

Tim Goddard died 21 Jun 1901, at his home three miles east of Anna, aged 83 years, and was buried in

Casper Cemetery.  He was married four times and left a widow and four sons, Andrew Goddard, Van Goddard, and William Goddard, all of near Anna, and David Goddard of Carbondale, Jackson County.

Nellie E. (Dillow) Hileman, widow of Scott Hileman, died 27 Jun 1901, at her home southeast of

Jonesboro, aged 32 years, and was buried in St. John’s Cemetery.  She left three daughters and two sons.

Young man named Weaver died Saturday (22 Jun 1901) on Dr. Finch’s farm near Lime Kiln and was

buried in Anna Cemetery.

A. Turner Casper of Balcom, was killed by a train last Saturday (22 Jun 1901) in front of the division

office in Carbondale, Jackson County.  He was a brakeman for the Illinois Central.  He left a wife, two children, and two brothers of Dongola.

William C. Moreland died 23 Jun 1901, at his home on Lincoln Street in Anna, aged 55 years, and was

buried in Anna Cemetery.  He was born in Tennessee and came to Union County with his parents when quite small and settled on a farm in the bottoms.  He has been a resident of Anna 25 years.  He was admitted to the bar in 1867, was state’s attorney and twice elected Anna city attorney, and was president of the board of education.  He married Miss Baybee, but she died in 1874, leaving an infant son, Clarence Moreland, who now resides in Louisville, Ky.  He married 2^nd Matilda Rich, who survives.

Child of Emma Cates died Tuesday (25 Jun 1901), aged 2 years, and was buried in Anna Cemetery.

Charles Sasser, of Reynoldsville, died Sunday (23 Jun 1901) in Anna of small pox and was buried in

Anna Cemetery.  He was married.

Walter Mayers, son of G.F. Mayers, living down on the creek near Alto Pass, died last Saturday (22 Jun

1901) of dropsy and was buried in Beech Grove Cemetery.  He left parents, a young wife, brothers, and sisters.

W.T. Boze died 20 Jun 1901, at his home two miles northwest of Cobden, aged 53 years, and was buried

in Limestone Cemetery.

Dewey Rodd, youngest child of L.N. Rodd, died 23 Jun 1901, at home near Cobden, aged 1 year and 7

months, and was buried in Rockland Cemetery.

6 Jul 1901:

“Grandma” Johanna C. (Beck) Soergel died 2 Jul 1901, at the home of F.W. Metzger, aged 82 years, 7

months, and 23 days, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery.  She came to the U.S. with her parents from Saxony in 1839.  She married Conrad Soergel in 1840 in St. Louis and moved to Union County about 1865.  She was the mother of John G. Soergel of Dallas, Texas, and Mrs. F.W. Metzger of Jonesboro.

13 Jul 1901:

John Shore died last Friday (5 Jul 1901) in Cairo, Alexander County, aged 32 years, and was buried at

Mountain Glen beside his father, Jacob Shore.

George W. Harris died last Tuesday (9 Jul 1901) at Baptist Hospital in St. Louis, and was buried beside

his wife in Jonesboro Cemetery.  He was born in Virginia and moved to Jonesboro with his wife and children in 1849.  He lived there 40 years and then moved to Mountain Glen.  His wife died 6 Jun 1896, aged 77 years.  He was a Mason.  His funeral was at First Baptist Church.  He used to say, “I was born on the 18^th day of the 8^th month in the year eighteen hundred and eighteen.” He left three children, Commodore P. Harris of St. Louis, Thomas Harris, and Kate, wife of John Rinehart of Jonesboro.  J.E. Alsup of west of Jonesboro was a stepson.

Will Brown drowned last Monday (8 Jul 1901) in the Mississippi River opposite Willard’s Landing.

A.J. Smith died last Monday (8 Jul 1901) in Craig, Mont., and was buried in Loxa, Ill.  He was the

former agent of the Mobile & Ohio Railroad in Jonesboro.

M. Inman died last Tuesday (9 Jul 1901) at the home of George W. Cline east of Anna.  He used to work

for Capt. A. Lence in the bottoms.

A young man from Reynoldsville died of small pox at the pest house in Anna.

Theresa Helen Bartsch, daughter of Charles Bartsch, died 6 Jul 1901, at the home of her parents, aged 2

years, 4 months, 1 day, and was buried in Casper Cemetery.  Her name is also incorrectly recorded as Grace Helen Bartsch.  (See also 20 Jul 1901, issue.)

Vera May Robertson, daughter of C.B. Robertson, died 7 Jul 1901, aged 1 year, 4 months, 21 days,and

was buried in Cobden Cemetery.

20 Jul 1901:

Robert McKee, of Thompsonville, drowned Wednesday (17 Jul 1901) in the Big Muddy River at

Murphysboro.  He was the principal of DeSoto school.

Helen A. Schuchardt died 17 Jul 1888, in San Antonio, Texas, was buried this week in Jonesboro

Cemetery beside her husband, Dr. George W. Schuchardt.  The remains were shipped in a pine box marked “human bones.”

Elizabeth Shannon died 12 Jul 1901, at her home in Carbondale, Jackson County, aged 85 years, 7

months, 6 days, and was buried beside her husband in Anna Cemetery.  She was formerly of Anna.  W.P. Slack of Carbondale was her son-in-law.

Lee Keith died last Sunday (14 Jul 1901) in the bottoms, aged 34 years.  He left a wife and child.

Anna Brown, widow of Henry Brown, died 17 Jul 1901, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Webb Ury,

south of Jonesboro, aged 72 years, 4 months, 25 days, and was buried in St. John’s Cemetery.  She was born in North Carolina and came to Union County in 1842.  She was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church.  She suffered a stroke of paralysis 25 years earlier and never fully recovered.  She left three children, Mrs. Webb Ury, Monroe Brown, and Joseph Brown; and two sisters, Mrs. Cornelius Frick and Mrs. John Poole of Russelville, Ark.

Laura Hunt Gunn was born in Burlington, Iowa, 7 May 1845, married Albert Gunn of Cobden on 12

Oct 1885, and died 10 Jul 1901, at her home in Cobden.  She joined the Baptist Church at age 17 and transferred to the Presbyterian Church.

27 Jul 1901:

Jeff Miller died last Monday (22 Jul 1901) at Elco, Alexander County, aged about 65 years, and was

buried in St. John’s Cemetery.  He was a member of the Jonesboro Masonic lodge.  (See also 2 Nov 1901, issue.)

Mrs. D.W. Leib died Saturday (20 Jul 1901) at home three miles south of Anna, aged 65 years, and was

buried in Anna Cemetery.

Adam Lence died 19 Jul 1901, at Hale Sanitarium on Main Street in Anna, aged 86 years, and was buried

in Casper Cemetery.  He was the son of Boston and Sarah Lence who settled in Union County between Saratoga and Cobden, where Adam was born.  He married in 1842 Miss Lingle.  They had one child born in 1855, who died very young.  He raised Dr. J.I. Hale from the time he was 6 years old.

Lamann James, daughter of F.F. James died Wednesday (24 Jul 1901) of typhoid fever, aged 4 years,

and was buried in Alto Pass Cemetery.

3 Aug 1901:

The wife of H.C. Clay of Murphysboro, Jackson County, died Monday (29 Jul 1901) in Colorado, and

was buried in Murphysboro.  H.C. Clay was the president of the Jonesboro Milling & Elevator Co.

10 Aug 1901:

Joseph Montgomery died Wednesday (7 Aug 1901) in Marion, Williamson County, aged 57 years.  He

was in the 109^th Illinois Infantry and Co. B, 11^th Infantry during the Civil War.  He left a wife and six children.  Mrs. William A. Hacker was his daughter.

Mrs. Susana Dillow died last Thursday (1 Aug 1901), aged 79 years, and was buried in Casper Cemetery. 

She left one son, S.M. Dillow of Anna, and one daughter, Mrs. Columbus Dillow of north of Anna.

17 Aug 1901:

James H. Whitlock died 11 Jul 1901, at Quincy, Calif., aged upwards to 70 years.  His father came from

Richmond, Va., in 1822 and settled three miles northwest of Jonesboro on a farm now belonging to Jacob Grear estate.  His father was county surveyor and he and his wife were buried in Jonesboro Cemetery.  Ben C. Whitlock, of Los Angeles, Calif., was a son of James H.

Mrs. Charley Steers died 8 Aug 1901, near Dongola and was buried in St. John’s Cemetery.  She was

born 21 Aug 1862.  She was a member of St. John’s Church.  She left a husband, four children, and two brothers.

24 Aug 1901:

Joe “Boy” Gore, of Johnson County, was shot and killed by a bartender in Cuba, Ill., last week.

31 Aug 1901:

Emma M. (Spence) Timberlake died last Tuesday (27 Aug 1901) in Murphysboro, Jackson County, aged

45 years.  She was born in Jonesboro and was a sister of Mrs. John Hollenback of Jonesboro.

Will B. Nicholson, of Los Angeles, Calif., died of paresis at Highland, Calif.  He suffered from heat

prostration brought on while running a line on the desert.  He was formerly from Jonesboro and went to California with his sister, Mrs. M.J. Frick, about 20 years ago.  He left a wife.

Mary J. Seavers and son, George W. Seavers, age 9, were crushed by a falling tree.  The family came

from Missouri to Reynoldsville and camped under a tree in their covered wagon.  Mr. Seavers stepped outside the wagon one morning during a severe storm and saw that the tree was about to fall.  He shouted to his family, but only a little daughter made it out in time.  The woman’s heart was found 30 feet from the rest of her body.

Fred L. Hartline was killed in St. Louis while removing scaffolding in a bin of a wheat elevator, aged 19

years, and was buried in Casper Cemetery.  He was the son of John Hartline of three and a half miles north of Anna. 

7 Sep 1901:

Mrs. Margaret Alby, of Cairo, Alexander County, died last Friday (30 Aug 1901), aged 92 years.

William Gould, of Villa Ridge, Pulaski County, died last Monday (2 Sep 1901) of heart disease.

14 Sep 1901:

W.B. Mullikin, of Murphysboro, Jackson County, died of heart failure along the railroad between

Jonesboro and Mill Creek, aged about 56 years.  He was a freight conductor for the Mobile & Ohio Railroad.  He left a wife and several sons and daughters.

O. Richardson, formerly of Cobden, fell from his dock and was drowned in the Miami River in Florida. 

He moved from Bronson, Fla., in the spring of 1895 and was then 78 years old.  He left a widow, a son in California, a son in Miami, Fla., and a grandson.

Thomas J. Chapman died 4 Sep 1901, at his father’s home in Iuka, of dropsy, aged 53 years.  He moved

to Union County 25 years ago.  He was a member of the Methodist Church, but transferred to the Congregational Church.  He left aged parents, a wife, and three children, Helen, Virgie, and Richard Chapman.

21 Sep 1901:

Anna (Miller) Fulenwider, wife of Adam Fulenwider, died 14 Sep 1901, at her home south of

Jonesboro, aged about 60 years, and was buried in St. John’s Cemetery.  She was born south of Jonesboro and was a member of St. John’s Church.  She was a sister of Paul Miller of Springville.  She left three sons, three daughters, a husband, two brothers, four sisters, and 11 grandchildren.  One daughter lived in Texas.  Her name is incorrectly listed as Amanda Fulenwider in one issue. (See also 5 Oct 1901, issue.)

William Corbit died 16 Sep 1901, at home in Anna, aged 74 years, and was buried in Anna Cemetery. 

He left a wife and two brothers.

28 Sep 1901:

Magg Jane Webster, wife of Thomas Webster, died 23 Sep 1901, at home in Anna, aged 35 years, and

was buried in Anna Cemetery.  She had small pox last winter.  She left a husband and six children; the youngest child was 5 months old.  The children were taken to the Baptist Orphans’ Home in Chicago (5 Oct 1901, issue).

Mrs. L.D. Massey died Thursday (26 Sep 1901) at Hale Sanitarium in Anna, aged 42 years.  She was a

member of the Modern Woodmen of the World.  She left a husband and two small children.

Infant daughter of Robert Sitter died Saturday (21 Sep 1901) in North Anna of congestion of the

stomach, aged 6 months.

5 Oct 1901:

James McCalley, of Hillsboro, Montgomery County, died last Saturday (28 Sep 1901) at the hospital,

aged 70 years and 9 months, and was buried in Anna Cemetery.  He was an old soldier.

Charlie Lence? died Monday (30 Sep 1901) at the home of his parents one and one half miles east of

Cobden, aged 24 years and 8 months.

12 Oct 1901:

Lena Bishop, daughter of John Bishop, died Sunday (6 Oct 1901), aged 11 years.

19 Oct 1901:

Maurice Dinneen died 2 Oct 1901, at home in Warsaw, Ind., of lung fever, aged 21 years.  He was a

fireman for the Mobile & Ohio Railroad.  He left a father, mother, sister, and brother, Will Dinneen, formerly of Jonesboro.

Mrs. John P. Reese died 9 Oct 1901, at her home three miles north of Cobden, of Bright’s disease, aged

67 years, 10 months, 9 days, and was buried in the family cemetery.  She was the only child of John and Elizabeth O’Daniel and was born in Union County.  At age 2 she moved to Wisconsin, but returned to Union County and lived on the same farm where she died.  She joined the Baptist Church at age 18.  She had nine children.  She left a husband, two sons, and three daughters.

Annie Bauer, wife of John Bauer, died 13 Oct 1901, at her home south of Jonesboro, aged about 52

years, and was buried in Ebenezer Cemetery.  She left a husband and two children.

Walter E. Stewart died 13 Oct 1901, aged 22 years, 5 months, 22 days, and was buried in Anna

Cemetery.  He was a brother of Dr. Stewart of Anna.

Mrs. Anna Sibyl Parks died 16 Oct 1901, in Anna, aged 73 years.  The funeral was held at the home of

her son, George C. Parks on Main Street in Anna.  She was a member of the Presbyterian Church.  She was the mother of C.K. Parks, John Parks, and George Parks.  The wife of Dr. Sam Walton was her granddaughter.

Fanny Dupass, daughter of the late Elizabeth Dupass, was fatally burned in an accident in the Mississippi

Bottoms, died Tuesday (15 Oct 1901) and was buried in Anna Cemetery.  She was weak minded.

26 Oct 1901:

Stella (Hall) Rhodes, wife of Fred Rhodes, formerly of Anna, died 23 Oct 1901, at home in Dallas,

Texas.  She left a husband, child, and a father, T.C.W. Hall.

Little Joe Scott, youngest child of Samuel Scott, formerly of Anna, died last week in St. Louis.

2 Nov 1901:

Thomas Price, formerly of Anna, was kicked by a horse he was shoeing and killed in East St. Louis, aged

30 years.  He lived at 749 N. 7^th St., East St. Louis, St. Clair County.  He was raised by L.J. Hess.  He left a wife and a son only a few days old. 

Serena (Sitter) Dillow, wife of Nelson Dillow, died 27 Oct 1901, three miles north of Anna, of

consumption, aged 42 years, and was buried in Anna Cemetery.  She was the daughter of Abraham Sitter and a member of the Lutheran Church.

9 Nov 1901:

Sarah (Williford) Walker, wife of William Walker, died 7 Nov 1901 of heart trouble at her home in the

Mississippi Bottoms, aged 51 years, 9 months, and 6 days, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery.  Her funeral was in her old girlhood home in Jonesboro.  She left seven sons, age 10 to 29.  She was the oldest daughter of C.H. Williford and married on 19 Oct 1871, in the room where her funeral was held, William W. Walker.  She was a member of Ebenezer Church south of Jonesboro.  She had 11 children, 10 were living:  H.H. Walker, of Jonesboro, the oldest,; George W. Walker; Annie

Walker, a teacher in Jonesboro; Mrs. Thomas Lowrance of the Bottoms; five other sons and the youngest daughter lived at home.  She was a sister of John F. Williford of Ann; Henry Williford, Will Williford, and Emmett Williford of Jonesboro; Samuel Williford of Lebanon, Indian Territory; Everett Williford of San Antonio, Texas; Mrs. Charles F. Willard and Mrs. Samuel T. Mozley of Jonesboro.  (See also 16 Nov 1901, issue.)

16 Nov 1901:

William Winn died Friday last week (8 Nov 1901) at his home in Jonesboro, aged 80 years.  He left a

widow and several sons and daughters.

Mrs. John Miller died 14 Nov 1901, at her home south of Jonesboro, of rheumatism and paralysis, aged

77 years.  She left four daughters, including Mrs. Joseph Rendleman of Lick Creek and Mrs. Dan Heilig, and one son.  George W. Fink of Mill Creek was her brother.

23 Nov 1901:

Mrs. Gusta Dillow died Sunday night (17 Nov 1901) at the home of her mother, aged 17 years, and was

buried in St. John’s Cemetery.  She left a mother, four sisters, and three brothers.

Youngest son of Samuel Stokes died Monday (18 Nov 1901) of diphtheria and was buried in Anna

Cemetery.

30 Nov 1901:

John Broadway died 18 Nov 1901, near Cobden, aged 46 years, and was buried in Casper Cemetery.

Infant son of B.W. Dillow, aged a few hours, was buried Wednesday (27 Nov 1901) in Anna Cemetery.

7 Dec 1901:

Letia Naomi Willard, daughter of Charles F. Willard, died 3 Dec 1901, in Jonesboro, of diphtheria,

aged 8 years, 3 months, 9 days, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery.

Mary Agnes Karraker, daughter of D.W. Karraker, died 4 Dec 1901, of infantile trouble, aged 2

months, 26 days, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery.

Josie Dillow, wife of B.W. Dillow, died 1 Dec 1901, at her home in Anna, aged 45 years, and was buried

in Anna Cemetery.  She left a husband, a son, and a daughter.

Mrs. N.E. Phillips died 27 Nov 1901, at her home in Cobden.  She was born near Centralia, Marion

County, 17 Jan 1836, the daughter of Jonathon and Sarah (Fowler) Phillips.  She married Isaac N. Phillips when 22.  In 1857 she moved to Cobden.  She had five brothers and one sister (who died in infancy).  She left two brothers, both living in Marion County.  In 1874 she joined the Presbyterian Church.

14 Dec 1901:

Sing Bankston, brother of Loren Bankston of Mill Creek, was fatally shot at McClure, Alexander

County, a few weeks ago.  Loren, the Mill Creek marshal, was shot at Mill Creek last Sunday (8 Dec 1901) by C. Mack Burns in the hip.

The little daughter of Ernest Willoughby died last week at home in Carbondale.

21 Dec 1901:

William Roberts died last Friday (13 Dec 1901) at his home in Anna, aged 59 years, 6 months, 8 days,

and was buried in Anna Cemetery.  He was born in England and came to the U.S. at the beginning of the Civil War.  He enlisted in the Union Army, was wounded, and pensioned.  He left three daughters.

James Stewart, a baker, age 50, was found dead near Pinckneyville, Perry County, last Monday (16 Dec

1901).

Rev. Silas Green died 14 Dec 1901, at the parsonage in Steeleville, and was buried in Anna Cemetery. 

He was the Methodist Episcopal pastor of the church in Steeleville.  He was born 17 Mar 1827, and was converted at the age of 19.  He was licensed to preach in 1858, ordained a deacon in 1862 by the Kansas Conference, and was ordained in elder by the Kentucky Conference.  He married three time.  By his first wife he had one son, Charles C. Green, of San Diego, Calif.  He married 3^rd on 13 Nov 1873, Sallie C. Tompson.  They had four children, Harry A. Green, of Mayfield, Ky., Myrtle Green, Daisy G. Green, deceased, and Edgar H. Green.  He also left one brother and two sisters.  The body was brought to Anna on the Mobile & Ohio Railroad.

Mrs. George W. Price died last Friday (13 Dec 1901) at home on the Spann farm in the bottoms and was

buried in Jonesboro Cemetery.  She left a husband and several grown children.

A Negro woman was killed in Cairo, Alexander County, last Sunday (15 Dec 1901) by an exploding

stove while she was cooking breakfast.

Mrs. John Britt was fatally burned and died Tuesday (17 Dec 1901) at her home in Lake Hills at

Youbedam Hollow.  Her clothes caught on fire Monday and she ran out of the house.  Her husband worked for W.T. Arnold, of Reynoldsville, in the timber business.  She left a husband, one son, and one daughter.

28 Dec 1901:

Child of George Foehr die last Monday (23 Dec 1901) south of Jonesboro.

Mrs. Louisa R. Hogan died 20 Dec 1901, at the home of her son-in-law, Theodore Landon, in Anna,

aged 58 years, 7 months, 25 days, and was buried in Anna Cemetery.  She left four children, Mrs. Charles Mills, Mrs. Theodore Landon, Emma Hogan, and Robert Hogan, all of Anna.

John Jungers  died Monday (23 Dec 1901) of dydrophobia.  He was bitten by a dog in September.  Dr.

Agnew said he had seen a good many deaths, but this one was the worst he had ever witnessed.  (See also 15 Feb 1902, issue.)

Stanley Crawford died 24 Dec 1901, at Dawson Springs, Ky., aged 35 years, 10 months, 24 days, and

was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery.  He was a Mason.  He was born in Jonesboro, the oldest surviving son of Monroe C. Crawford.  He left his parents, and brothers and sisters, John Crawford, Charles Crawford, George Crawford, and Mary.  He was a cousin of Miss Emma Yost of Cairo. (See also 4 Jan 1902, issue.)
