1 Jan 1898: David Oxley, of Centralia, died last Thursday (30 Dec 1897). He oversaw the construction of the Illinois Central Railroad through Union County. Annie Bliss, only child of L.F. Bliss, died 27 Dec 1897, of diptheria at her home in Anna, aged 8 years, and was buried in Anna Cemetery. 8 Jan 1898: James A. Bradley died last Thursday (30 Dec 1897) at his home near Shiloh Church in Toppingtown and was buried in Evergreen Cemetery Wednesday (5 Jan 1898). Margaret Jones died Monday (3 Jan 1898) of consumption, aged 53 years, and was buried in Rich Cemetery. She lived with her daughter in Mrs. Hazlewood’s house on Grampian. 15 Jan 1898: Jennie (Hunsaker) White, wife of Dr. W.G. White, of Bumcombe, Johnson County, died 30 Dec 1897, aged 33 years, 8 months, 18 days, and was buried in the same casket with her infant in the Masonic Cemetery north of Vienna, Johnson County.. She was the daughter of Squire Mort Hunsaker and married Dr. White three years ago. Their child died one week after it was born 31 Dec 1897. Dr. White’s first wife died several years ago. (Copied from the Vienna Times) Andrew Brown died 7 Jan 1898, at his home southwest of Jonesboro, aged 46 years, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery. He left a wife, four children, brothers, sisters, and an aged father. Son of J.H. Beisswingert died Wednesday (12 Jan 1898), aged 7 weeks, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery. Janie Bright, wife of N. Bright, died 8 Jan 1898, in childbirth, aged 25 years, and was buried in Lemley Cemetery. She left a 1-day-old infant. Mrs. Jonah, an old lady, died 8 Jan 1898, on South Street in Anna of consumption, and was buried in the Catholic cemetery in Cobden. 22 Jan 1898: James E. Berry, the “tramp millionaire,” died last Monday (17 Jan 1898) in Paducah, Ky. He married Sadie Miller last summer in Mt. Vernon, Jefferson County. He inherited a fortune from his father, but lived as a tramp and squandered money. Once he burned a $500 bill. Son of Richard and Estelle (Thornton) Britton died last Friday (14 Jan 1898) in Villa Ridge, Pulaski County, aged 2 years. 29 Jan 1898: Wife of John Grieb, of Cape Girardeau, Mo., died 14 Jan 1898, aged 43 years. She married on 5 Dec 1872, in Jonesboro. She had 12 children, 10 of whom survived her. She was a sister-in-law of J.M. Grieb of Jonesboro. Michael N. Carris, formerly of Jonesboro, died Wednesday (26 Jan 1898) at his home near Reynoldsville of acute kidney disease, aged about 60 years, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery. He left no children. John Hess died 24 Jan 1898, at his home one mile south of Anna, aged 76 years, 2 months, 3 days, and was buried in Anna Cemetery. He was born in Union County and married in 1844 Naomi Craver. He had eight children, five of whom survived him, Emaline wife of Jerry Boyd, Malinda wife of Thomas Manees, Salome wife of John Hileman, Dennis Hess, and Mollie wife of Jasper Smith. Young child of Ed Ralls died Wednesday (26 Jan 1898) of burns after he pulled a kettle of hot grease on himself. 5 Feb 1898: Isaac G. Goodrich died 30 Jan 1898, at his home one mile east of Cobden, aged 84 years, and was buried in Cobden Cemetery beside the rocks. He was born in 1814 in Lockport, N.Y., and came to Cobden in 1866. He was a deacon of the Congregational Church. He left a wife. Margaret Maher Hilton, wife of Henry Hilton, died 30 Jan 1898, at her home one mile southeast of Cobden, and was buried in the Catholic cemetery. She was born in 1826 in Kilkenny, Ireland, and came to Cobden in the early 1860s. She left a large family of children. James Murphy, foreman of the steel laying gang on the railroad, fell from a train near Mountain Glen and died Wednesday (12 Feb 1898) in Murphysboro, Jackson County. The funeral of Christena Powles was at Mill Creek. She was the aunt of Mrs. Elam Hartman. 12 Feb 1898: Jacob Veith died Wednesday (9 Feb 1898) in the office of Dr. W.C. Lence of heart failure, aged 75 years, 2 months, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery. He was born in Dodenau, Germany, and came to Jonesboro from Ohio 40 or more years ago. He was a butcher. He left a widow, Caroline Veith, but no children. (See also 19 Feb 1898, issue.) George Minnich, father of W.P. Minnich of Anna, died Monday (7 Feb 1898) at his home in Villa Ridge, Pulaski County, aged 73 years. 19 Feb 1898: Marie Schlittler, daughter of Mrs. F. Schlittler, died Thursday (17 Feb 1898), aged about 7 years, and was buried in the Catholic cemetery in Cobden. Leo C. Tweedy died 12 Feb 1898, at the home of his father, Willis Tweedy, three miles north of Cobden, aged 7 years, 5 months, 22 days, and was buried in Limestone Cemetery. Mrs. Benedict Voytier died 14 Feb 1898, at the home of her brother, the late Andre Thomas, aged 73 years, 2 months, 6 days, and was buried in Cobden Cemetery. Mrs. Thomas Brinkley died 16 Feb 1898, of consumption, at the home of William Sharp in Jonesboro, and was buried in Walnut Grove Cemetery. She left a husband and one son. Ira Lee Wilson, son of J.D. Wilson, of three miles northwest of Jonesboro, died 16 Feb 1898, aged 2 years, 2 months, 2 days, and was buried in Anna Cemetery. Kennedy Brown was thrown from his wagon near William J. Harrison’s in the bottoms and broke his neck last Saturday (12 Feb 1898), aged 45 years. Ray Worthington, son of John A. Worthington, died 17 Feb 1898, aged 9 years, 8 months, 19 days. (See also 26 Feb 1898, issue.) 26 Feb 1898: Judge H.M. Smith died last Friday (18 Feb 1898) in Pulaski County. He was county judge there 20 years. Mrs. S.A. Henley died 19 Feb 1898, at the home of her son, E.R. Spence, in Anna, aged 51 years, and was buried in Anna Cemetery. She left four children, Albert Spence of St. Louis, E.R. Spence of Anna, Robert Spence of Chicago, and Carrie Henley, age 12 years. 5 Mar 1898: Mrs. Jane Laud, aunt, died of pneumonia, and Miss Gertie Williams, niece, died of pneumonia typhoides, last Saturday (26 Feb 1898). Charles L. Baggott, of Murphysboro, Jackson County, died Wednesday (2 Mar 1898) in Cape Girardeau, Mo., of kidney trouble, aged about 45 years, and was buried in Murphysboro. He was a brother of O.P. Baggott of Anna and M.V. Baggott of Cobden. He left a widow. 12 Mar 1898: James W. Powell died 5 Mar 1898, in Jonesboro of consumption, aged 35 years, 3 months, 3 days, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery. Roy Mangum, son the the Rev. B.G. Mangum, died 5 Mar 1898, at his home on Tennessee Street in Anna, aged 8 years, and was buried in Anna Cemetery. Leah Lingle died 5 or 6 Mar 1898, at the home of her son, Josiah M. Lingle, on Maple Lawn farm one mile southwest of Makanda, of la grippe, aged 82 years, and was buried in Union Cemetery north of Anna. (See also 26 Mar 1898, issue.) Lena Roxey Johnson, daughter of Dr. J.B. Johnson, died 7 Mar 1898, aged 2 years, and was buried in Anna Cemetery. Elizabeth A. Park, wife of J.W. Park, died 8 Mar 1898, at her home on Vienna Street in Anna, of heart trouble, aged 65 years, 9 months, 8 days, and was buried in Anna Cemetery. She left four sons and three daughters, the Rev. J.C. Park of Leechburg, Pa., Ivy Park of Glenwood, Iowa, Mrs. George Waldrop and Mollie Park of Anna, George L. Park of Kankakee, Josie Park and Alfonzo Park of Anna. The wife of her deceased son of Monticello was present at the funeral with her little son. 19 Mar 1898: The memorial services for Frances E. Willard was to be next Sunday (20 Mar 1898) in Anna. 26 Mar 1898: Josiah M. Lingle died 21 Mar 1898, of bilious typhoid pneumonia. Two children of William Stokes, of Springville, one a young man who died of consumption and the other who died of croup, were buried in St. John’s Cemetery. Nettie Bloodworth, daughter of Files Bloodworth, died 13 Mar 1898, at her home near Cave Spring, aged 14 years, and was buried in Casper Cemetery. 2 Apr 1898: Ferba Sitter, wife of Christopher J. Sitter, died 28 Mar 1898, at her home eight miles east of Anna, aged 38 years, and was buried in Ebenezer Cemeery near Lick Creek. 9 Apr 1898: John Wesley Lingle, son of Philip and Mary J. Lingle and grandson of the late N.B. Collins, died 31 Mar or 1 Apr 1898, of measles at the home of Tim or Harris Rendleman south of Cobden, aged 17 years, 5 months, 21 days. His mother died some years ago, his twin brother died two years ago, and another brother was killed 25 May 1896, when a silica mined caved in. Mrs. Frances M. McElhannon died 31 Mar 1898, at her home three miles east of Cobden, aged 64 years, 22 days, and was buried in Rich Cemetery. She was the mother of A.J. Hunsaker, of Jonesboro, and Ellen wife of Joe Rendleman, of Anna. She left two sons, two daughters, and 10 grandchildren. Child of Sherman Saddler died of measles in Anna. 23 Apr 1898: Will Roberts, of Murphysboro, Jackson County, son of Mrs. C. Roberts, of Jonesboro, and brother of Mrs. W.H. Baker, died in St. Louis last Sunday (17 Apr 1898) of cancer of the stomach, and was buried in Murphysboro. Thomas J. Green died 19 Apr 1898, at his home in Anna, aged 71 years, 9 months, 11 days, and was buried in Anna Cemetery. He was a member of G.A.R. He left a widow, three sons, and one daughter, Thomas J. Green Jr. of Della Plain, Ark., Mrs. C.C. Terpinitz, George Green, and Richard Green, all of Anna. Infant daughter of Mr. Thomas, living on the C.M. Miller berry farm, died last Friday (15 Apr 1898), aged not quite 2 years, and was buried in Anna Cemetery. 30 Apr 1898: Andrew Kelley, son of John P. Kelley, died 27 Apr 1898, at his home in Jonesboro, aged 19 years, and was buried in Bethel Church Cemetery in the eastern part of the county. Infant of Hugh and Irene Grace Croom, of Cairo, Alexander County, was buried in Anna Cemetery. Mrs. Lee Ferguson, of Cairo, was an aunt to the infant. Son of Widow Day of Chestnut Street, Anna, died Tuesday (26 Apr 1898) of measles, and was buried in Anna Cemetery. Fannie wife of David N. McNamee, died 26 Apr 1898, at the home of her sister, Mrs. G.E. Farrer, in Anna, aged 37 years, 4 months, and was buried in Anna Cemetery. She was born in Sparta and came to Anna in the early 1880s. She married McNamee in September 1884 and four years ago moved to Olmsted, Pulaski County. She left a husband, children, one brother, Frank Dobbins, and two sisters, Mrs. G.E. Farrer and Daisy Dobbins. 7 May 1898: Frank Hoffner, grandson of the late Judge Hoffner, was shot in the head and murdered Saturday (30 Apr 1898) at Hoffner Schoolhouse, east of Wetaug, Pulaski County, and was buried in Mt. Pisgah Cemetery. He was shot by an African American from Jonesboro. He left a mother, sisters, and brothers. Infant of J.D. McDonald of Cairo, Alexander County, died Monday (2 May 1898) and was buried in Anna Cemetery. Robert Spurgeon Choat, son of James Choat, died 2 May 1898, aged 10 days, and was buried in Anna Cemetery. Elsie Tweedy, eldest daughter of Sing. Tweedy, died 1 May 1898, of consumption at home in Anna, aged 16 years, 8 months, and was buried in Alto Pass. 14 May 1898: America (Morgan) Snyder, wife of Mrs. Will F. Snyder and daughter of the late James Morgan, died 8 May 1898. Her funeral was in Murphysboro, Jackson County, Monday (9 May 1898). James Whalen died 5 May 1898, at his home near Balcom, aged 70 years, 9 months, 8 days, and was buried in Anna Cemetery. He was Catholic. Joseph Long, son of Fred Long, died 10 May 1898, of consumption, and was buried in Cobden Catholic cemetery. Edgar A. Johnson, son of W.A. Johnson, died 10 May 1898, at his home south of Cobden, aged 18 years, and was buried in Casper Cemetery. Frank W. Lamer died 10 May 1898, at his home two miles north of Cobden, aged 68 years, 7 months, 27 days, and was buried in Cobden Cemetery. He was a charter member of the Cobden Masonic lodge (28 May 1898, issue.) 21 May 1898: Bethune Dishon died 18 May 1898, at his home on South Blanchard Street in Murphysboro, Jackson County, aged 53 years, 2 months, 26 days. He was born in Jonesboro, the son of Henry Dishon, who died in 1856. He was in the 109th Infantry during the Civil War. He moved to Murphysboro in 1871 and in 1873 establish, with John W. Grear, the Independent. He married on 8 Jul 1874, Alice Peasley of New Harmony, Ind. He was a brother of Calvin Dishon, deceased, and left one sister, Mrs. Nancy B. Hacker of Jonesboro, the only surviving family member. (See also 28 May 1898, issue.) 4 Jun 1898: Glen Kimber, of near Dongola, son of Maurice Kimber and nephew of Mrs. James Nash, died Sunday (22 May 1898), of spinal meningitis, aged 9 months, and was buried in Anna Cemetery. 11 Jun 1898: Child of Mr. Hufstedler, aged 5 years, died last Monday (6 Jun 1898) in the western part of Jonesboro and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery. Moses Brown, of Elco, Alexander County, died several weeks ago, aged 76 years, and was buried in Frick Cemetery. Mrs. Mabel McMahon died 5 Jun 1898, of typhoid fever at the home of her father, William Postlewait, five miles west of Jonesboro, aged 27 years, 2 months, 10 days, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery. She was born in Licking Co., Ohio, and moved to Union County in 1892. She married on 18 Jan 1893, Edward McMahon, who died three years ago. David Davis died Wednesday (8 Jun 1898) at his home on the fair grounds, of pneumonia fever, aged about 45 years. He left a wife and several children. Hazel Lanier, daughter of Angus Lanier, died 5 Jun 1898, of flux at the home of her parents on Chestnut Street in Anna, aged 3 years, 4 months, 4 days, and was buried in Anna Cemetery. She was related to Mrs. Robert Cropper of Mound City, Pulaski County, Mrs. Jane McIntire, Molly McIntire, George McIntire, Wash Boyd of New Grand Chain, Pulaksi County, and Will Lanier of near Vienna, Johnson County. Daughter of Mrs. Day died Friday (10 Jun 1898) at her home on Chestnut Street of measles, aged 13 years, and was buried in Anna Cemetery. Sarah Bloodworth, wife of Files Bloodworth, died 7 Jun 1898, of measles at her home on the Richard Musgrave farm north of Anna, aged about 47 years, and was buried in Casper Cemetery. She left a husband and two daughters. 18 Jun 1898: Edward Everett Brown, oldest son of Allison Brown, died 15 Jun 1898, of typhoid fever and inflammatory rheumatism at the home of his grandmother, Mrs. Rebecca Corbin, in Jonesboro, aged 21 years, 10 months, 29 days, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery. He left a mother, father, two sisters, and three brothers. Luther G. Clay died 12 Jun 1898, at the Presbyterian hospital in Chicago of Bright’s disease, aged 48 years, 10 months, 18 days, and was buried in Cobden Cemetery. He was a Mason. He left a mother, brother, sister, wife and two daughters. (See also 25 Jun 1898, issue.) 25 Jun 1898: John Becker, formerly of Williamson County, was hanged by a mob in Great Bend, Kan., last week. He had killed a young woman with whom he was infaturated last April. Basil Cover, son of M. Cover, died Saturday (18 Jun 1898) of congestion of the stomach, at the home of J.D. Whiteaker near Mountain Glen, aged 5 years, and was buried in Anna Cemetery. Frank Scanlon, engineer, and Ben D. Williams were killed Thursday last week (16 Jun 1898) in Murphysboro, Jackson County, when the bridge across the Big Muddy collapsed. John M. Jeffrey was killed by falling coal in Murphsyboro, Jackson County, last Tuesday (28 Jun 1898). George Burton, a young man, died in the barracks of P.B. Turner’s place west of Jonesboro last Monday (20 Jun 1898). The widow of George Burton died at her home in Jonesboro Wednesday (22 Jun 1898). She had just been given a widow’s pension (26 Mar 1898, issue.) E.H. Perrigo died 18 Jun 1898, at his home on Vienna Street in Anna, aged about 65 years, and was buried in Anna Cemetery. He left a wife. He had recently moved from Lick Creek. Joseph Pelley died 17 Jun 1898, at his home in Anna, aged 69 years, 9 days, and was buried in Anna Cemetery. He was Catholic. He left a wife; four daughters, Mrs. Joseph Klocke of St. Louis, Mrs. Olive Garrett of Anna, Kate Pelley, and Annie Pelley; and five sons, Cornelius Pelley, Thomas Pelley, John Pelley, and Joe Pelley. 2 Jul 1898: Dr. Henry Harmes, of Dongola, died 18 Jun 1898, of paralysis. Charles A. Misenhimer, of Dongola, was supposedly killed by burglars and then placed on the train tracks. Della Ingraham, wife of William N. Ingraham, foreman on George Barringer’s farm in the bottoms, died 25 Jun 1898, aged about 23 years, and was buried in Cape Girardeau. She left one child. 9 Jul 1898: James M. Lail was murdered last Friday (1 Jul 1898) near Jackson, Mo., by John Hendricks (age 19 years), who was captured near Jonesboro. Thomas “Tom” Ogles was shot and killed by officials near Fountain Church, a few miles south of Marion, Williamson County last week, and was buried in Fountain Cemetery. He and his brother, Ben Ogles, were horse thieves. Ten year ago Tom jumped from the courthouse window during his trial for stealing wheat. (See also 16 Jul 1898, and 1 Oct 1898, issues.) Robert Aldridge, son of Mrs. R.C. Nash, aged 12 years, and Otis Crowell, son of John Crowell and grandson of R.C. Nash, were struck by a train and killed 4 Jul 1898, near Barlow Crossing just north of Jonesboro. Aldridge was buried in Anna Cemetery, and Crowell was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery. Florence Phillips, daughter of T.H. Phillips, of Murphysboro, Jackson County, died Wednesday (6 Jul 1898) at St. Andrew’s Hospital in Murphysboro following an operation for appendicitis. 16 Jul 1898: Leona Bissell, wife of Isaac Bissell, died 9 Jul 1898, at her home in Anna, aged 81 years, and was buried in Anna Cemetery. She left an aged husband, one son, Andrew Bissell of Anna, and three daughters, Mrs. George Otrich, of Dongola, Mrs. Charles Crowell of Jonesboro, and Mrs. John Gattinger of Anna. Walter Lynch was shot Friday by George Leird Jr. and died Sunday (10 Jul 1898) at his home near Abernathie’s planing mill, aged about 35 years, and was buried in Anna Cemetery. Lynch was a blacksmith for James DeWitt. He left an wife and two daughters. Leird was married and had a baby. Leird was too attentive to Lynch’s wife. Leird got five years in the penitentiary (3 Dec 1898, issue). Margaret C. Davie, wife of S.A.B. Davie, died 8 Jul 1898, at her home in Anna of malarial fever, aged 61 years, 8 months, 1 day, and was buried in Anna Cemetery. She left a husband and three children, Mrs. George Galvin, Charles Davie, and Edgar A. Davie. Earl Lee Rendleman, son of Harry and Cora Rendleman, died 7 Jul 1898, aged 4 months, and was buried in Alto Pass Cemetery. Mrs. Lee Miller died Sunday (10 Jul 1898) at her home south of Jonesboro and was buried in St. John’s Cemetery. Her 8-month-old child died Thursday (14 Jul 1898). She left a husband and several children. 23 Jul 1898: Philip Weiss committed suicide by swallowing carbolic acid last Saturday (16 Jul 1898), aged 50 years, 3 months, 29 days, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery. His wife had divorced him. He left two sons and several daughters. Most of his children lived in St. Louis. One daughter was Mrs. Fannie Theiss of three miles south of Jonesboro. Wilhelm Weiss of Alto Pass and George Weiss of Jonesboro were older brothers. Henryette Rusert died 17 Jul 1898, at the home of her brother-in-law, H.F. Melzer of Jonesboro, aged 62 years, 7 months, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery. Zadoc “Doc” Elms died Tuesday in Anna, aged 72 years. He left a wife, four children, and numerous grandchildren. He had lived in Anna 44 years and was a veteran of the Mexican War and the Civil War. 30 Jul 1898: Mrs. Barrett of Jonesboro died 21 Jul 1898, at the hospital in Murphysboro, Jackson County, after surgery to remove part of her intestines. Infant son of John Dew of Anna died Wednesday (27 Jul 1898), aged 12 days, and was buried in Anna Cemetery. 6 Aug 1898: Daughter of Richard Brooks, aged 13 years, died Wednesday (3 Aug 1898), and was buried in Anna Cemetery. Minnie Julia DeWitt, eldest daughter of J.C. DeWitt, and William A. “Willie” Selden, Jr., drowned 28 Jul 1898, crossing Hudgeons Creek, eight miles northwest of Anna, and were buried beside each other in Anna Cemetery. Minnie was born 9 Feb 1880, and was aged 18 years, 5 months, 10 days. She left her parents, two sisters, and grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. J.A. Shadrick. Willie was born 27 May, 1872, and was aged 26 years, 2 months, 1 day. He left his parents, one brother, Ed Selden of Anna, and a half brother, Louis Selden, of Cobden. Daughter of Frank Penninger of four miles east of Anna, aged 6 years, was buried Sunday (31 Jul 1898) in Anna Cemetery. Samuel Martin died 30 Jul 1898, at his home in Anna, aged 73 years, 10 months, 29 days, and was buried in Anna Cemetery. He was born 31 Aug 1824, in Jackson Co., Ala., the third of 10 children born to Urias and Kezkiah (Williams) Martin. He came to Union County with his parents when 6. He was in the Mexican War. He married in 1849 Matilda McElhaney of Jonesboro. He had five children, four of whom survived him, Dr. Sidney C. Martin, Franklin P. Martin, Samuel Martin, and Annie H. Martin, all of near Anna. One son, Hannibal H. Martin, died several years ago at the age of 21. Eliza (Stone) Landreth died 31 Jul 1898, at the home of her son, Jonathon Landreth, aged 81 years, 5 months, 26 days, and was buried in the family burying ground near her home. She was the last of a family of 10 children. She was born in Alabama and came to Union County with her parents when 7. She married Mr. Staton, who died a short time later. She married McKinley Landreth, who died 46 years ago. She joined the Methodist Church at the age of 15. She had six children, of whom four survived her, Jonathon Landreth, who lives on the old homestead, George Landreth, of two miles north in Jackson County, Mrs. Joseph Rendleman, of Alto Pass, Mrs. G.W. Abernathie, of East Prairie, Mo. One son died in the Civil War and a daughter died a number of years ago. 13 Aug 1898: Warren Standard died 5 Aug 1898, at the home of his father, William J. Standard, one mile southeast of Mt. Pleasant, aged 32 years, 7 months, 16 days, and was buried in Sitter Cemetery near Western Saratoga. He left a young wife, the daughter of Morgan Stokes, and two sons. 20 Aug 1898: Thomas Benjamin “Tom” Hewes died 12 Aug 1898, aged 76 years, 6 days, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery. He was born 6 Aug 1822, in Louisville, Ky., and became a head engineer on a steamboat at age 17. He married on 15 Jun 1855, Duffenia V. Davie, daughter of John “Jack” Davie, and she died 13 May 1887. He was on the river for 24 years and moved to Willard’s Landing in 1860 to run a ferry for Sam Vancil. He moved to Jonesboro in 1863 and was a member of I.O.O.F. He had five children of whom all died in infancy, but one, John M. Hewes. Fountain Adams, son of Mack Adams, died last Sunday (14 Aug 1898) of congestive chill, three miles south of Jonesboro, aged 18 years. Steven Shade, Negro, died Tuesday (16 Aug 1898) in Wetaug, Pulaski County, allegedly aged 100 years. Robert Fowler, son of S.E. Fowler, aged 15 years, died 18 Aug 1898, of typhoid fever. George Whittemore Mesler, nephew of Ed A. Mesler of Ashley, died 16 Aug 1898, of typhoid fever, aged 14 years, 5 months, 2 days, and was buried in Cobden Cemetery. 27 Aug 1898: Lizzie (Brown) Mead, wife of A.E. Mead, died recently at her home in Blain, Wash., aged 34 years. She left a husband and four children. B.N. Rethey, of Champaign, formerly of Cobden, died 22 Aug 1898, at his home in Champaign, aged 66 years, 3 months, 7 days, and was buried in Rockland (Cobden) Cemetery beside his wife. He was born 16 Dec 1831, in Rothweile, Baden, Germany. He married Louise Kaiser of Kensigen, Baden, Germany, on 19 Oct 1857. He came to America with his wife and oldest child in March 1860. He lived in Union County 32 years. He lived in Jonesboro until 1863 and in Cobden until 1892, when he moved to Champaign. They had five children, of whom one son, Frank J. Rethey of Cobden, and three daughters, Mrs. Emma Russell of Champaign, Mrs. Josie Overton of Atchison, Kan. (or of Colorado), and Julia A. Rethey of Anniston, Ala. (or of Champaign). The newspaper spelled the name Rethe and Rethey. 3 Sep 1898: Sam McAnally, of Marble Hill, Mo., husband of Minnie (Weaver) McAnally and brother-in-law of Bruno Weaver of south of Jonesboro, died last Tuesday (30 Aug 1898) when he fell between two cattle cars on the railroad at Jamestown, N.D. (See also the 10 Sep 1898, issue.) Etta Brown, youngest daughter of M.V. Brown of Balcom and sister of W.O. Brown of Alto Pass, died of consumption and was buried in Big Creek Cemetery 28 Aug 1898, aged 19 years. William J. McKinley and two sons of Johnson County, were killed when a tree they were under in a storm was struck by lightning. May Belle Bevel, born 1 Jun 1882, died 28 Aug 1898, aged 16 years, 2 months, 27 days. She joined the Methodist Episcopal Church at age 12. Mrs. Emeline Dillow, of Dongola, sister of Adam Eddleman of Anna, died 26 Aug 1898, at the home of her daughter, Jacobi Lewis on Ashley Avenue, aged 70 years, and was buried in St. John’s Cemetery. Charles Boze, of three miles north of Cobden, shot and killed himself Monday (29 Aug 1898), aged 18 years. Mrs. Rebecca Jones, wife of Thomas Jones, died 25 Aug 1898, at her home in Cobden, aged 72 years, 1 month, 21 days, and was buried in Cobden Cemetery. Mary P. Jarvis, wife of Commodore Joseph R. Jarvis, U.S.N., died 17 Aug 1898, aged 87 years, 6 months, 8 days, and was buried in Geneva beside her husband. He was in the Navy from 1812 until his death in 1869. She left two children, Joseph R. Jarvis and Josephine Jarvis, of Cobden. 10 Sep 1898: Mrs. Josephine Duschl, wife of Matthias Duschl, died 5 Sep 1898, at her home two miles south of Jonesboro, aged 43 years, 1 day, and was buried in Kollehner Cemetery. She had eight children, all living. She was a sister of Christian Reischauer. 17 Sep 1898: Michael Pickel, of a few miles south of Jonesboro, died Sunday (11 Sep 1898), aged about 48 years. He left a wife and two children. Miss Polly Haislip, aged lady, died Saturday (10 Sep 1898) at the home of her sister-in-law, Mrs. Haislip, south of Anna, and was buried in Anna Cemetery. She was the aunt of Alice Haislip. Joseph Bigler died, aged nearly 83 years. Mrs. Lydia S. Longley died 12 Sep 1898, in Marshall, Minn., at the home of her daughter, aged 77 years, 10 months, 23 days, and was buried in Cobden Cemetery beside her husband. She left three daughters, Mrs. L.T. Linnell of Cobden, Mrs. D.D. Lee of California, and Miss Fannie Dwinell of Minnesota, and one son, W.E. Longley, of Chicago. 24 Sep 1898: Elam Hartman died 20 Sep 1898, at his home north of Anna of Bright’s disease, aged 70 years, 18 days, and was buried in Casper Cemetery beside his wife who died two months ago. He left several children. Mrs. Simeon Dillow, of Anna, was his daughter. Judge William Eaves died 19 Sep 1898, of diabetes at his home on Washington Street in Anna, aged 82 years, 10 months, 24 days, and was buried in Anna Cemetery. He was born 25 Oct 1815, in Tennessee and moved with his parents to Alabama. At age 19 he moved to Union County. He was a member of the Primitive Baptist Church. He married in 1834 Martha Williams, of Kentucky, who died in 1845. They had five children, of whom, M.V. Eaves and Mrs. Adam Eddleman survived. He married 2nd in 1847 Mrs. Mary Delves. They had five children, of whom three survived him: Mrs. T.G. Stokes, Mrs. Jos. Culp and Mrs. L.J. Hess, all living near Anna. He also raised a niece, Fanny Eaves. 1 Oct 1898: Ernest Collie, of Anna, a bridge carpenter, was killed Sunday (25 Sep 1898) in a train wreck two miles south of Hodges Park, near Cairo, Alexander County, aged 22 years, and was buried in Anna Cemetery. He married Belle Bess about a year ago and also left an infant son who was born a few hours before his father’s death. 8 Oct 1898: Cleora Hess, daughter of Rosella Hess, died 5 Oct 1898, of burns, aged 7 years, and was buried in Anna Cemetery. Infant child of J.C. Goodman, of Pulaski, Pulaski County, died Saturday (1 Oct 1898) and was buried in Anna Cemetery. Charles Brown died 4 Oct 1898, at his home three miles south of Jonesboro, aged 82 years, 9 months, 20 days, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery. He was born in North Carolina and came to Union County with his father, Abram Brown, 80 years ago. He had 11 children, of whom three sons and three daughters survived with the widow. 15 Oct 1898: Capt. I.N. Phillips died 5 Oct 1898, at his home near Thebes, Alexander County, of typhod fever, aged 68 years, and was buried in Mt. Zion Cemetery, Alexander County. He was the first postmaster of Cobden and was provost marshall at the beginning of the Civil War. M.S. “Vick” Leftcovitch, of Grayville, formerly of Alexander County and Jonesboro, committed suicide by gas inhalation or asphyxiation last Saturday (8 Oct 1898) at the home of his brother-in-law, George H. Norman, at 109 Channing St., St. Louis, aged 54 years. He was a traveling salesman and had been unemployed for four months. 22 Oct 1898: Nancy Evans died 16 Oct 1898, in Jonesboro, aged 82 years, 5 days. She was the daughter of James Brown and her parents came from North Carolina to Union County in 1809. She joined the Baptist Church south of Jonesboro when 20 and transferred her membership to First Baptist Church of Jonesboro 28 Aug 1845. She married 1st at age 18 L.H. Ferguson, who died in 1865. She married 2nd John Evans, founder of the Jonesboro Gazette who died in May 1885. She had no children by her second marriage, but two stepchildren, Henry Evans of St. Louis and Mrs. J. Henry Hilboldt of Jonesboro. 29 Oct 1898: George W. Tanner, formerly of Cairo, Alexander County, cut his throat with a razor and died in Barlow City, Ky., last Saturday (22 Oct 1898). His widow was the daughter of Jos. Keyser of Jonesboro. William N. Neal, patient at the hospital in Anna, committed suicide last Friday (21 Oct 1898) by hanging himself with a handkerchief from a water pipe, and was buried in Jackson County. 5 Nov 1898: Sidney Jones, son of George Jones, died 29 Oct 1898, in Alto Pass, aged nearly 3 years, and was buried in Alto Pass Cemetery. Harreld Houston, son of C. Houston, died Tuesday (1 Nov 1898) of pneumonia and bronchitis, aged 6 months, and was buried in Alto Pass Cemetery. Son of Abraham Dodson died Sunday (30 Oct 1898), aged 16 years, and was buried in Casper Cemetery. Dr. D.A. Parker died at his home four miles south of Anna, aged 78 years, 10 months, and was buried in Anna Cemetery. Mrs. William Ester died Sunday (30 Oct 1898) on the C.M. Miller farm and was buried in Anna Cemetery. James Mayberry died Saturday (29 Oct 1898) at home on the W.N. Corliss farm north of Anna, aged 76 years, and was buried in Casper Cemetery. Mrs. Sarah Halterman died at her home near Camp Ground, aged 46 years, and was buried in Camp Ground Cemetery. Daughter of Cornelius Pelley died Friday (4 Nov 1898) at his home south of Wetaug, Pulaski County, aged 4 years, and was buried in Anna Cemetery. The family was Catholic. John C. Baggott, nephew and adopted son of Prof. M.V. Baggott of Cobden, died 20 Oct 1898, at Presidio near San Frsancisco, and was buried in Cobden Cemetery. He was in Co. E, 1st Washington Volunteer Infantry and was the first soldier of the Spanish-American War to be buried in Union County. Mrs. Sarah Judy died 30 Oct 1898, in Fulton, Ky., aged 72 years, and was buried in Cobden Cemetery. Frank McElhannon died 31 Oct 1898, two miles southeast of Cobden, aged 30 years, 3 months, 5 days, and was buried in Cobden Cemetery. 12 Nov 1898: Johnson Shepherd, nephew of Mrs. Earnest Collie, whose husband was killed on the Mobile & Ohio a few weeks ago, was killed last Monday (7 Nov 1898), four and a half miles east of Anna by a falling tree, aged 16 years. James E. Henderson died 7 Nov 1898, aged 75 years, 4 days, and was buried in Cobden Cemetery. Luzella Hazel, daughter of Mack Hazel, died Monday (7 Nov 1898) in Anna of typhoid fever, aged nearly 8 years, and was buried in Pope County. 19 Nov 1898: Gladys Myrtle Willoughby, infant daughter of Ernest Willoughby, died 12 Nov 1898, aged 2 months, 26 days, and was buried in Anna Cemetery. Martha Jane Reece, wife of Hon. Addison Reece, died 13 Nov 1898, of pneumonia typhoides, aged 68 years. She married at age 18. She left four sons.
26 Nov 1898: Stephen C. Spaulding, of Villa Ridge, Pulaski County, shot himself on his daughter’s grave in Oak Hill Cemetery in Janesville, Wis. He was a member of I.O.O.F. In 1863 he left Janesville and settled in Villa Ridge. He was a jeweler. Mrs. Katharine Miller died 18 Nov 1898, at her home in Anna of paralysis, aged 76 years, and was buried in Anna Cemetery. She was born in Frederick Co., Md., and came to Jonesboro with her parents in 1840. She married in 1843 Henry Miller, who died in 1871. In 1851 she moved to a farm near Caledonia (Olmsted), Pulaski County. She left eight children, A.J. Miller of Cobden, Frank Miller of Centralia, Watson Miller of Fairmont, Wis., George Miller and Caleb Miller of Anna, Mrs. Arthur Moss and Mrs. J.N. Dickinson of Anna, and Mrs. T.J. Bouton of Montana. Horace Settlemoir, son of E.M. Settlemoir of Anna, died of neglect and lack of food at his home on the corner of Elm and Marion streets in Carbondale, Jackson County, aged 24 years, and was buried in Anna Cemetery. He got sick when working for the Illinois Central Railroad and returned home for care, but his wife had left to visit friends in Anna. (See also 3 Dec 1898, issue.) Daughter of George Mattingly died Monday (21 Nov 1898). Alvin Simmons died Monday (21 Nov 1898), aged 18 years, and was buried in Elvira, Johnson County.
3 Dec 1898: Mary A. Sessions, widow of Richard Sessions, died 29 Nov 1898, at her home in Anna, aged 72 years, 11 months, 28 days, and was buried in Anna Cemetery. Her husband died many years ago. She left three sons, Dr. O.V. Sessions of California, Ewing Sessions, and A. Ney Sessions of Anna; and one daughter, Dr. Kenosha Sessions of Cincinnati, Ohio. Willis Musgraves died 30 Nov 1898, at the home of his father, Richard Musgraves, north of Anna, aged 23 years, and was buried in Anna Cemetery. He lived on a farm in the bottoms, where he contracted the illness that caused his death. He married Maggie Roberts, who survived him, with a son, Louis Musgraves. He also left a sister and younger brothers. 10 Dec 1898: Samuel Hileman died 8 Dec 1898, at his home in Jonesboro, aged 72 years, 11 months, 12 days, and was buried in St. John’s Cemetery. He was in Co. H, 11th Infantry during the Civil War and never married. Sarah Hileman, who never married, was his sister (22 Jul 1899, issue). 17 Dec 1898: Martha Davis, widow of John M. Davis, died last Sunday (11 Dec 1898) at her home in Carbondale, Jackson County. Kitty May Sams Tanner, widow of George Tanner, who shot himself in Kentucky some time ago, committed suicide by poisoning herself Monday (12 Dec 1898) at her room in the Farmers Hotel in Cairo, Alexander County, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery. She was the daughter of Mrs. Joseph Keyser, of Jonesboro. She married William Hess, of Jonesboro, and had two children, both of whom died in infancy. She and Hess then separated and later she shot and killed Ransom Sampson and wounded his wife in Cairo in a jealous rage, but was acquitted. Myrtle Williams died 9 Dec 1898, of dropsy at the home of her father, William Williams, near Camp Ground, and was buried in Williams Cemetery. W.D. Mundy died last Saturday (10 Dec 1898) at the hospital in Anna from a blow from a mop received from another patient, John Kelser. Harriet Loucinda (Robinson) Hileman, wife of Christian Monroe Hileman, died 11 Dec 1898, in Ullin, Pulaski County, aged 59 years, 1 month, 9 days, and was buried in Anna Cemetery. She was a sister of L.F. Robinson, A.W. Robinson, and Mrs. Lee Hileman.

Dillow, of Dongola, was buried Wednesday (21 Dec 1898) in Anna Cemetery. 31 Dec 1898: Thomas Martin Mitchell died at his home one mile east of Cobden, aged 52 years, 7 months, 24 days, and was buried in Cobden Cemetery. He was a veteran of the Civil War, a member of G.A.R., and a Mason. 7 Jan 1899: Amelia Kohler, wife of August Kohler, died 28 Dec 1898, at her home one mile east of Cobden, aged about 23 years, and was buried in the Catholic cemetery in Cobden. Miles J. Barnum died 29 Dec 1898, at his home in Carbondale, Jackson County, aged 66 years, 8 months, 9 days, and was buried in Cobden Cemetery. He was a member of G.A.R. Drake Harris Vancil died 1 Jan 1899, at his home in Cobden, aged 47 years, 7 months, 20 days. He was a Mason and a member of the Knights of Honor. (See also 21 Jan 1899, and 4 Mar 1899, issues.) Mrs. Peter Sauerbrunn, of south of Jonesboro, died 30 Dec 1898, of pneumonia, aged 51 years, 11 months. She left a husband and seven children. Minnie Ninninger died 3 Jan 1899, at her home in Madison, and was buried in Mounds, Pulaski County. Her mother kept the Otrich Hotel in Mounds. Elizabeth M. Dodd died 23 Dec 1898, at her home near Western Saratoga, aged 83 years, 6 months, 23 days, and was buried in Anna Cemetery. Roxa Keith died 2 Jan 1899, of consumption, at the home of her father, John Kimmell, four miles southeast of Anna, aged 33 years, 3 months, 8 days, and was buried in Anna Cemetery. Mrs. Charlotte Phillips, wife of Judge Phillips, died 4 Jan 1899, at the home of Thomas Hileman in Anna, aged 74 years, 5 months, 8 days, and was buried in Springfield, Sangamon County. Daughter and only child of John Davis of Moscow was burned to death when her clothing caught fire from the stove, aged 3 years. Mrs. Mary “Aunt Polly” McBride died 29 Dec 1898, at her son’s home near Ava, aged 89 years. She was a cousin of James K. Polk; his father and her father were brothers. She was raised in Tennessee and came to Illinois after she married. She left a large number of descendants. 14 Jan 1899: Mrs. Burris and Mrs. Will Boyce, daughters of Jeff Miller, formerly of Jonesboro, died near Wolf Lake the first of the week and were buried in Jonesboro Cemetery. Mrs. Elizabeth Nance died 9 Jan 1899, at her home in Anna, aged 64 years, 3 months, 3 days, and was buried in Anna Cemetery. 21 Jan 1899: Dr. R.E. Farris died Saturday (14 Jan 1899) in Roswell, N.M. He was shot Friday (13 Jan 1898) by Theodore “Theo” Vick, son of Monroe Vick, who moved to Roswell with Dr. Farris in 1898. He left a wife, a son, and a daughter. Vick became a fugitive. He was captured and claimed he shot Farris in self defense (28 Jan 1899, issue). He was sentenced to 18 years in the penitentiary (8 Apr 1899, issue). William L. Parmley died Wednesday (18 Jan 1899) of spinal fever, at his home three miles north of Cobden, and was buried in the family burying ground. (See also 25 Mar 1899, issue.) Daughter of W.L. Parmley died last Saturday (14 Jan 1899) and was buried in the family burying ground. 28 Jan 1899: Mrs. Adaline (Pender) Smiddy died 21 Jan 1899, of lung trouble, in Springville, aged 66 years, 11 (or 3) months, 12 days, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery. She joined Jonesboro First Baptist Church about 1859. She married on 24 Mar 1857, William R. Smiddy. She had three daughters and six sons. She left a husband; four sons, James Smiddy, Benton Smiddy, Walter Smiddy, William J. Smiddy; two daughters, Isabelle Kelley and Lillian Toler; and three sisters, Mrs. Sadie Tharp of Memphis, Tenn., Mrs. Minta Marcum (or Markham) and Bettie Pender of Jonesboro. Two of her brothers died in the Civil War in the 11th Infantry. Will J. Cadigan died of consumption at his home two miles east of Cobden, and was buried in Cobden Cemetery. He was a Catholic. Twins of Wiley Dillow, born in North Anna Tuesday (24 Jan 1899), died Wednesday (25 Jan 1899) and were buried in Anna Cemetery. Mrs. Port Nesbit, daughter of H.M. Smith, died last Friday (20 Jan 1899) at her home in Mound City, Pulaski County. 4 Feb 1899: Dr. J.W. Burnett died 1 (or 2) Feb 1899, of consumption at his home in Alto Pass, aged 55 years, 5 months, 23 days, and was buried in Alto Pass Cemetery. He was born 8 Aug 1843, in Vernon, Trumball Co., Ohio. He entered Rush Medical College and remained until the Chicago Great Fire in 1871. He went to Ohio Medical College in Cincinnati, Ohio, and was graduated. He married in September 1875 Barbara A. Choat. They had five children, of whom two twin daughters died in infancy. In 1861 he enlisted in the Union Army and was discharged for disability in Washington, D.C. In 1887 he moved from Metropolis, Massac County, to Alto Pass. He left a wife, a son, and two daughters. (See also 11 Feb 1899, issue.) 11 Feb 1899: David Brown died 6 Feb 1899, in Jonesboro, aged 73 years, 11 months, 2 days, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery. He had just returned from Arkansas where he was living. He was born in Tennessee and lost his eyesight in the Civil War. He was pensioned at $70 a month. He left a wife and three children. Will Wilkinson died last Sunday (5 Feb 1899) in Murphysboro, Jackson County, of spinal meningitis, aged 25 years. Louis A. Selden died 3 Feb 1899, aged 49 years, 4 months, 25 days. He left a wife, an aged father, and a half brother in Anna. His funeral was in Cobden Sunday (5 Feb 1899). 18 Feb 1899: Bettie Thorpe, daughter of Frank Thorpe of Memphis, Tenn., was burned to death recently when her dress caught fire from an open grate, aged 2 years. Samuel Hargrave died 16 Feb 1899, at his home in Pomona, Jackson County of pneumonia, aged 75 (or nearly 77) years, 10 months, 18 days. He was born 28 Mar 1827, in Jonesboro, the son of Robert Hargrave, who settled in Union County in 1811 from Pennsylvania. He married Clarinda R. Crowell on 27 Nov 1845. He went to California in 1849. His wife died in 1854. They had four children: Henry Hargrave (deceased), Allen C. Hargrave, Edward F. Hargrave, and Robert R. Hargrave. He married 2nd on 15 Nov 1855, Malinda Hileman. They had seven children: Harriet, Josephine (deceased), Samuel, Ida A., Sarah J., Jefferson D., and Charles (deceased). He left two sisters, Mrs. Paul Frick and Mrs. N. Brown. (See also the 25 Feb 1899, issue.) A baby was found smothered Monday (13 Feb 1899) in the Miller’s barracks in Anna, aged 3 weeks. Mrs. James Freeman died 13 Feb 1899, at her home near the Anna fairgrounds, aged 69 years, and was buried in Anna Cemetery. Infant daughter of George Davis of Anna died 13 Feb 1899, aged 6 days, and was buried in Anna Cemetery. 25 Feb 1899: Otis Lewis, oldest son of Henry Lewis, died 22 Feb 1899, of spinal meningitis, at his home near Ware in the bottoms, aged 27 years, and was buried in Tripp Cemetery. Theresa Duschel, daughter of Matthias Duschel, died 20 Feb 1899, of consumption south of Jonesboro, aged nearly 17 years, and was buried in Kollehner Cemetery. Wife of Rev. E.G. McCommon died at her home in Mound City, Pulaski County last Sunday (19 Feb 1899). Mrs. Dan Lyerly died 17 Feb 1899, at the home of her son south of Anna and was buried in Big Creek Cemetery. Elizabeth Darter, wife of Jos. Darter, died 19 Feb 1899, at her home in Anna, aged 32 years, 5 months, 13 days, and was buried in Anna Cemetery. She left a husband and three children. 4 Mar 1899: Maliscent B. Sabine died 25 Feb 1899, at the home of her son, Dr. F.A. Sabine, in Anna, aged 94 years, 5 months, 1 day, and was buried in Troy. Mr. Sexton was accidentally shot and killed by Arthur Wright last Tuesday (28 Feb 1899) on the farm of J.W. Fuller, south of Anna, and was buried in Anna Cemetery. John Miller died last Monday (27 Feb 1899) at his home on Monroe Street when a blood vessel burst in his head, and was buried in Cobden Cemetery. He was a barber. Widow of Erastus Jones, of Moscow, was struck by a freight train Thursday this week (2 Mar 1899) in Anna, aged about 50 years. She was a sister of James Richardson of Dongola. Mrs. G. Augusta Tarleton died 27 Feb 1899, of pneumonia at the home of her son-in-law, H.R. Buckingham, aged 89 (or 90) years, and was buried in Lexington, Ky., beside her husband. She was born in Georgetown, Ky., the daughter of Annie Garrard and Thomas Hawkins and was the oldest grandchild of Gov. Garrard of Kentucky and Capt. John Hawkins of the Revolutionary War. At the age of 17 she married George Washington, nephew and namesake of Gen. Washington. She then went to Virginia to live in the old Washington homestead until her husband died four years later. She returned to Kentucky to live with her parents 11 years and then married Leo Tarleton, of St. Mary’s Parrish, La. They also owned an elegant home in Lexington, Ky., and many slaves, but lost much of their wealth after the Civil War. Before or during the war her husband died. Afterwards she came to Illinois and lived on a farm north of Alto Pass. She had three daughters and two sons, Mrs. Buckingham, Dr. Thomas Tarleton of Patterson, La., and Leo Tarleton, a lawyer in San Antonio, Texas, survived her. (See also 11 Mar 1899, issue.) Ethel Tarleton, of San Antonio, Texas, was a daughter of Leo Tarleton (22 Jul 1899, issue.) George W. Hileman died 26 Feb 1899, at his home near Dongola, about about 70 years. He was born in Union County. Mabel Boswell died 18 Feb 1899, of pneumonia, in Carbondale, Jackson County, aged about 45 years. Her mother died three days before (15 Feb 1899). She joined the Presbyterian Church in Missouri. Her daughter, Mrs. David Kimmel, died about nine years ago. She left a husband and sons, Samuel Abernathie and Walter Abernathie. Charles Baltzell, nephew of E. Henderson of Alto Pass, died 5 Mar 1899, of hemorrhage of the stomach, in Alto Pass, aged about 50 years. He was left a cripple and an orphan as a boy. He came to Alto Pass 20 years ago. He was a member of the Congregational Church. He left several sisters. Mrs. Spring, of Cobden, was his aunt. John Wild, son of Joe Wild, of Murphysboro, Jackson County, was accidentally shot and killed last Saturday hunting near Reynoldsville, and was buried in Murphysboro. 18 Mar 1899: Charles E. Duckworth died 24 Feb 1899, in Oregon, aged about 40 years. He was born in Clark County and married on 11 Aug 1888, Barbara Lence, formerly of Jonesboro. He was a Mason and an Odd Fellow. He left one adopted child. Elijah Hartline died 11 Mar 1899, at his home three miles south of Cobden, aged 69 years, 11 months, 26 days, and was buried in Casper Cemetery. He married Emeline Richard about 30 years ago. He left a widow and six children. May Medlin, wife of Andrew Medlin, died 7 Mar 1899, at her home five miles east of Anna, aged 37 years. Less than two weeks ago she buried her daughter. She left a husband and five children. George Miller, brother of Mrs. J.N. Dickinson, aged 56 years, was buried in Anna Cemetery. He was born in Jonesboro. 25 Mar 1899: John A. Wiley died 14 Mar 1899, of cerebro spinal fever, near the old family homestead, and was buried in Evergreen Cemetery. He got sick while duck hunting in the bottoms. He was born 10 Aug 1864, in Jonesboro and moved with his parents west of Makanda in August 1860. He joined Oak Grove M.E. Church 1 Jan 1877. He married Maggie E. Applegate on 29 Dec 1880. He left a wife and four children, Charles Wiley, Fannie Wiley, Bessie Wiley, and Arthur Wiley, the oldest 18 years and the youngest 10 years. He also left a mother, four brothers, and two sisters. He was a Mason. Monroe Gentry died of spinal fever near Makanda within the past several months. Samuel Dillow died 16 Mar 1899, near Springville, aged upwards to 70 years. He left a wife and three daughters. Virgil Barrow died 21 Mar 1899, in St. Andrew’s Hospital in Murphysboro, Jackson County, of injuries sustained when he fell from a coal car last Monday (20 Mar 1899), and was buried in Alto Pass Cemetery. He was employed in shaft No. 6 at Mount Carbon by the Mig Muddy Coal and Iron Co. He joined the Congregational Church five years ago. He was born near Dongola and joined the Lutheran Church at age 16. He married on 24 Dec 1895, Jennie Parks, who survived him, with a little daughter. Hammond, died 21 Mar 1899, of membraneous croup at the home of her parents on Chestnut Street, aged 2 years, 9 months, 5 days, and was buried in Anna Cemetery. 1 Apr 1899: Wife of Lorenzo Meyer died Thursday last week (23 Mar 1899) in the western part of Jonesboro and was buried Saturday (25 Mar 1899). J.F.F. Wallace died Tuesday (28 Mar 1899) in Cobden of stroke of paralysis. Levi Simmerman died 24 Mar 1899, of pneumonia, at the home of his father, George Simmerman, five miles east of Anna, and was buried in Camp Ground Cemetery. He left a wife and a 3-year-old son. Clinton Simmerman, of Springfield, was his brother. Leander Simmerman died 28 Mar 1899, of pneumonia, at the home of his half brother, C.C. Elizabeth Lowery died 25 Apr 1899, of appendicitis at her home in Dexter, Mo., aged 49 years, 4 months, 5 days, and was buried in Anna Cemetery. Her son, Francis Lowery died of appendicitis some months ago. She left a husband and two daughters, Mrs. Dr. W.H. Davis of Dexter, Mo., and little Gertie Lowery. 6 May 1899: Mary Jane Phillips died at her home in Belleville, aged 70 years, 10 months, 7 days. She was born 13 Jun 1828, in Jonesboro, the daughter of John and Mary (Miller) McIntosh, natives of Tennessee. She joined Clear Creek Baptist Church in a revival in 1851 or 1852. She married Samuel H. Phillips, who died 47 years ago, 19 Apr 1853, in Jonesboro. She moved to Belleville in July 1853. She left four children, William Phillips and Clara, married and living in Pennsylvania, Elijah Phillips of Chicago, and Aurelia Phillips at home; and three grandchildren. Andrew J. Miller committed suicide Saturday (27 Apr 1899) at his home in Cobden by shooting himself in the head, and was buried in Cobden Cemetery. He was distressed after his bank closed and he was indicted for embezzlement. He was born in Union County and had lived in Cobden 25 years. He left a wife and several children. C.M. John Ligeon drowned Sunday (7 May 1899) in a culvert one half a mile west of Jonesboro after being thrown from his wagon, aged 56 years, 11 days, and was buried in Anna Cemetery. He was born near Nashville, Tenn., and settled in Jonesboro when 19. He was a blacksmith and served in the 48th Kentucky Volunteers during the Civil War. He left a wife and four children, Mrs. Alice Jeanplane of Lee Center, Rose Jackson of near Golconda, Pope County, Nobie (?) Ligeon, and John H. Ligeon of home. 20 May 1899: Fred Savoie died at his home in Chicago last week. He was formerly the assistant engineer at the Anna hospital. 27 May 1899: Nancy Ann (Smith) Hileman died 21 May 1899, of heart failure, at her home in Jonesboro, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery. She was born in Union County and was a half sister of the late L.P. Wilcox. She married Judge Thomas Hileman. She left one child, Alice R. Willard, the wife of Elijah A. Willard, who lives with her three children in San Luis, Potosi, Mexico. One granddaughter, Alice Virginia Willard, was left the old Willard homestead in Jonesboro and the rest of her estate was to be equally divided between the three grandchildren. Westman, near Vienna, Johnson County, aged 71 years, 6 months, 5 days, and was buried in Murphysboro, Jackson County. He was born 13 Dec 1827, in Centre Co., Pa., and lived in Jonesboro 20 years. His son, John Henney, died of consumption in 1894 and was buried in Silver City, Nev. In April 1899 he went to live with his daughter. John Willis Cauble, infant son of Adam Cauble, died Monday (19 Jun 1899) of heart failure, aged 15 days, and was buried in Alto Pass Cemetery. John Due, section foreman, of Villa Ridge, Pulaski County, was struck and killed by a freight train engine and was buried in Villa Ridge Cemetery. John Jefferson Dougherty, of 1020 Grayson St., San Antonio, Texas, son of Lt. governor John Dougherty, died 14 Aug 1899, in Eureka Springs, Ark, and was buried in the National Cemetery in San Antonio, Texas. He was born in Jonesboro and in 1868 was appointed to West Point Military Academy, graduating in 1872. In 1872 he was appointed lieutenant of the 11th Infantry and in 1880 was promoted to 1st lieutenant and in 1890 to captain. He left a wife, daughter, and one brother, George M. Buckingham, committed suicide last week at his home in Patterson, La., aged 21 years. He was formerly of Alto Pass and had attended Union Academy. Florence W. He was born 26 Oct 1834, in Union County, the son of William Green, who was also born in Union County in 1807. His grandfather came to Union County in 1805 from South Carolina. He married on 17 Jan 1865, Annetta Cover, daughter of Daniel D. and Mary Cover, who was born 25 Nov 1847, and died 10 May 1893. He left six sons, Otis Green, Daniel Green, John H. Green, Florence E. Green, James A. Green, and Roy Glenn Green; and one daughter, Lula A. Green. Mrs. Susan F. Parks, mother of Mrs. Tom Sexton of Dongola, died Thursday (17 Aug 1899) at Crab Orchard, Williamson County. Carlock, of six miles east of Dongola, died 27 Aug 1899, of congestion at the home of his father, T.E. Carlock, in Dongola, aged 25 years, and was buried in West Eden Cemetery, Johnson County. Clyde Mays, of Centralia, brakeman, was killed last Sunday (10 Sep 1899) when he fell under a caboose near Green’s Crossing. 22 Sep 1899: John Sims died 15 Sep 1899, at his home in Anna, aged 81 years, 7 months, 18 days, and was buried in Anna Cemetery. He was born 27 Jan 1818, in Kilmarnick, Scotland, one of 12 children, five of whom died when small. His siblings were Mrs. Hodge, James Sims, William Sims, John Sims, Robert Sims, Andrew Sims, and Stewart Sims, all deceased. In 1836 he came to the U.S. with his parents and his father died in Cincinnati, Ohio, on the trip from New York to Terre Haute, Ind. He married on 29 Feb 1840, Jane White, who was born in England. They lived in Thornton, Ind., and had five children, three of whom survived him, Mrs. Mary Stafford, of Elwood, Ind., Mrs. Ruth Wolfinger, of Perry, Okla., and A.W. Sims, mayor of Anna. His wife died 23 Sep 1883, and he soon afterward moved ot Anna. He married 2nd on 25 Nov 1890, Mrs. Elizabeth Cavaness. He also left eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was a Baptist. Daughter of Everett Miller, of Springville, died 10 Sep 1899, of whooping cough and intermittent fever, and was buried in Casper Cemetery. Infant of William Balling, of Springville, died 12 Sep 1899, and was buried in St. John’s Cemetery. 30 Sep 1899: William Perkins, brother of Mrs. Sarah Carmac, died 22 Sep 1899, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Cairo, Alexander County, aged 42 years, and was buried in Anna Cemetery. A tree fell on him while driving a log team in the woods near New Madrid, Mo. 7 Oct 1899: Harry Wilson, porter at the Roberts House in Murphysboro, Jackson County, was found dead last week in a barn outside Murphysboro. Alice E. Corzine, wife of A.J. Corzine, died 5 Oct 1899, in Jonesboro, aged 26 years, 11 months, 28 Days, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery. She was a member of Jonesboro First Baptist Church. She left a husband, two children, two brothers, Henry Hileman and Willis Hileman, of Olmsted, Pulaski County; and sisters, Mrs. T.T. Baker and Mrs. R.L. Hileman. She was a member of the M.E. church. James R. Roberts died 9 Oct 1899, of Bright’s disease at his home in Anna, aged 57 years, and was buried in Makanda. He came to Illinois with his parents and settled on a farm near Lick Creek. He was a member of Makanda Baptist Church. He married in February 1868 Carrie Rendleman, daughter of John Rendleman. He left a wife, three sons, Frank Roberts, Charles Roberts, and Edgar Roberts; and one daughter, Estella. James A. Coomes died 8 Oct 1899, at his home three miles south of Jonesboro, aged 77 years, 2 months, 5 days, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery. George Michael Barnhart, son of Peter Barnhart, died 7 Oct 1899, of typhoid fever at the home of M. Hehenberger, two miles south of Jonesboro, aged 21 years, 9 months, 27 days, and was buried in Grieb Cemetery. He was a member of the Kornthal Band. 21 Oct 1899: Jacob Schorr, formerly of Jonesboro, died 9 Oct 1899, at his home near Aldridge, aged 72 years, and was buried at Mountain Glen. He was the son of John Schorr, who lived southwest of Jonesboro, and a brother of Mrs. Fred Schaffer of Anna and John Schorr of California. Grandma Lingle died 17 Oct 1899, at her home south of Cobden, aged 92 years. Maude (Price) Stokes, formerly of Anna, wife of Thomas V. Stokes and adopted daughter of Jasper L. Hess, died 15 Oct 1899, of spinal meningitis at her home in Pine Bluff, Ark. She had been living in St. Louis until two months ago. She left three children. 28 Oct 1899: Guy Lowery, son of Willis Lowery, of Cobden, died Sunday (22 Oct 1899), aged 11 months. 4 Nov 1899: Rev. George E. Morrison was hanged last Friday (27 Oct 1899) in Vernon, Texas, for poisoning his wife with strychnine 10 Oct 1897, at Pan Handle City, Texas, so that he could marry another. He left two sisters, Adah and Hattie, who formerly taught school in Anna. His father was the pastor of the Methodist church in Jonesboro years ago. William R. Hileman, of Johnson County, formerly of Union County, died Sunday (29 Oct 1899) aged upwards 60 years. Joseph “Big Joe” Cook was shot and killed by Frank Moore, of Villa Ridge, last Saturday (28 Oct 1899) at Pulaski, Pulaski County. Cook was the largest man in southern Illinois and weighed over 300 pounds. Maude Oliver, daughter of John Oliver, of Anna, died at her home on Tennessee Street in Anna, aged 3 years, and was buried in Pope County. 11 Nov 1899: Ezra Hartley died 6 Nov 1899, at his home on Nat Green’s farm, aged about 42 years. He left a wife and three children. J. Carl Ransmeier, son of J.C. Ransmeier, died 7 Nov 1899, two and a half miles south of Jonesboro, aged 16 years, 10 months, 22 days, and was buried in Kornthal Cemetery. Solon A. Hinkle died 4 Nov 1899, at the hospital in Murphysboro, Jackson County. Martin Matthew Rinehart, son of John M. Rinehart, died 5 Nov 1899, aged 1 year, 11 days, and was buried in Anna Cemetery. Addie Harland died 4 Nov 1899, of typhoid fever at the hospital in Anna, where she worked, aged 39 years, and was buried in Anna Cemetery. She was born in Pope County and formerly lived near Mt. Pisgah. William Bright died 3 Nov 1899, of lung trouble, at the home of his father-in-law, “Bud” McCuan, aged 28 years, and was buried in Anna Cemetery. He was a barber. He married Lizzie McCuan and left three children. 18 Nov 1899: Major John A. Logan Jr., son of Gen. John A. Logan, was killed Friday (10 Nov 1899) leading an assault by his battalion upon the insurgents near San Jacinto, Luzon. He was born in July 1865 in Murphysboro, Jackson County. Michael Tobin’s badly decomposed body was found in the woods near Mound City, Pulaski County, last Friday (10 Nov 1899). He shot and killed Major Fitzpatrick at the National Cemetery last June, then evidently committed suicide. C.H. Williford died 14 Nov 1899, of neuralgia and catarrh, at his home in Jonesboro, aged 76 years, 10 months, 19 days, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery. He was born 25 Dec 1822, near Murfreesboro, Tenn., and came to Jonesboro in 1846. He married on 18 Jul 1844, Mary E. Sanders, who died 18 Feb 1896, in Jonesboro. They had 11 children, Mary V. Williford deceased, John F. Williford of Anna, Sarah I. wife of William Walker of south of Jonesboro, Samuel R. Williford of Lebanon, Indian Territory, Frances A. wife of Charles F. Willard of Jonesboro, Charley Williford deceased, Henry Williford, Helen M. Williford, William Williford, Emmett Williford, all of Jonesboro, and Everett Williford of San Antonio, Texas. He also left 48 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. George C. Hanford died 14 Nov 1899, at the home of his father-in-law, John Barringer, five miles east of Anna, aged 29 years, 26 days, and was buried in Pleasant Grove Cemetery, Johnson County. He left a wife and children. Moses Smiddy, son of William Smiddy Jr., died 12 Nov 1899, of congestion of the bowels, and was buried in Chapel Cemetery. Jake Tweedy died Thursday (16 Nov 1899) in Cobden and was buried in Toledo Cemetery. Mrs. R.M. Towne, wife of C.S. Towne, died 9 Nov 1899, at her home one mile north of Cobden, aged 59 years, 5 months, 17 days, and was buried in Toledo Cemetery. 2 Dec 1899: Mary A. (Williams) Thomas, wife of B.F. Thomas, died 15 Nov 1899, in Jackson, La. George Tripp died 28 Nov 1899, at the home of his father, C.M. Tripp, two miles northeast of Anna, aged 24 years, 11 months, 22 days, and was buried in Cobden Cemetery. 9 Dec 1899: Lucinda Lingle, daughter of Judge Collins, died in Jonesboro and was buried in Collins Cemetery near Alto Pass. Child of George Morris, a relative of Ed Lee of Jonesboro, died Wednesday (6 Dec 1899) in Thebes, Alexander County. Addie (Pickerell) Bevins, wife of Ed Bevins, died 6 Dec 1899, at the home of her father, John Pickerell, in Anna, and was buried in Anna Cemetery. She left a son, husband, parents, brothers and sisters.
16 Dec 1899: William Martin, Negro, was to be hanged 29 Dec 1899, by Sheriff John Hodges in Cairo, Alexander County, for murder. The last hanging there was in 1879 when a man named Glass was hanged. Mrs. Will Davis, of east of Cobden, died 9 Dec 1899, of consumption, and was buried in Bethel Cemetery. Sarah (Lamer) Ferrill, wife of John Ferrill of Farina, died 24 Nov 1899, aged 75 years. She was born in Union County. She was the daughter of Joe Lamer, deceased, and the sister of John D. Lamer, deceased. She left one sister, the wife of Nelson Lingle, of Jonesboro, who was the mother of James Lingle, William Lingle, Cornelia Lingle, Mrs. Lafayette Rich, John Lingle, and Charles M. Lingle of Murphysboro, Jackson County. She left five children and a husband. 23 Dec 1899: Leo Richard died at the home of his uncle in Makanda, aged 9 years, and was buried in the Catholic cemetery in Cobden. Moses Hoyle, an aged deaf man, was struck by the engine of a Mobile & Ohio train a couple of miles above Jonesboro, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery. He left a son in Alto Pass, and a son-in-law, Mr. Williams. Helen Ezra Edwards, daughter of J.E.N. and Mary E. Edwards, died 19 Dec 1899, at the St. Charles Hotel in Anna, aged 5 months, and was buried in Anna Cemetery. 30 Dec 1899: Richard Zimmerman drowned Saturday (23 Dec 1899) and was found in the Big Muddy River south of Grand Tower Tuesday (26 Dec 1899), aged 57 years. Elenora Wavering, aged 10 years, daughter of Anton Wavering; Charlotta Middendorf, daughter of W.H. Middendorf; Bernardina Freund, daughter of Joseph Freund; Mamie Futterer, daughter of Charles Futterer; Mamie Hickey, daughter of John Hickey; Mary Althoff; Mena Freiburg, daughter of John Freiburg; Margaretha Werner, daughter of John Werner; Josephine Bohne, Olivia Tempe, Wilhelmina Kottendorf, Laura Menke, Celia Vonderhaar, Lena Zeiger, Eleanora Tempe, and Helen Soebbing were burned to death 23 Dec 1899, in Quincy, Adams County, while rehearsing at school for a Christmas pageant.
