Dr. Albert G. Williams died 25 Dec 1885, aged 50 years, and was buried in Odd Fellows Cemetery,

Dongola.  (See also 16 Jan 1886, and 25 Dec 1886, issues).

Louisa Thomas died 28 Dec 1885, at the residence of her son, A. Thomas, aged 82 years, 5 months, and

was buried in Cobden Cemetery.

Margaret C. (Lambert) Wilson and unborn child were murdered 7 Jan 1886, by her husband, William S.

Wilson, in Saratoga Precinct.  She was his second wife and had nine children.  He formerly lived at Flaughtown, two miles south of Jonesboro.  He was hanged 12 Nov 1886, in Jonesboro.  (See also 16 Jan 1886, 23 Jan 1886, 18 Sep 1886, 9 Oct 1886, 13 Nov 1886, and 2 Feb 1895, issues.  The 13 Nov 1886, issue has a sketch of him on the front page.)

16 Jan 1886:

B.F. Smith died in Vienna, Johnson County.  He was married seven times and left 23 children.

Albert Hyde, only brother of William Hyde, died at the residence of his stepfather, Edward William West, in Belleville,

       Monday (11 Jan 1886), of paralysis, aged 35 years.

Maximilian "Mack" Etherton died at his residence near Eltham last Sunday (10 Jan 1886).

30 Jan 1886:

Son of C.D. Finley died Thursday (28 Jan 1886) in Cobden, aged 6 months, and was buried in Cobden Cemetery.

6 Feb 1886:

David T. Linegar died 2 Feb 1886, at his residence in Cairo, Alexander County.  He left a wife and two daughters.

H.M. Peeler died 27 Jan 1886, in Dongola, and was buried in Mt. Pisgah Cemetery, Pulaski County.

James H. Elms died 4 Feb 1886, at the Anna residence of his father, City Marshal Elms, aged 28 years.

James Wallace died Saturday (30 Jan 1886) at the residence of William Lasley in Anna, aged about 84 years.  He

      was born in Ireland and formerly lived in Saratoga.  He left a number of children.

Kate E. Jones, daughter of N.P. Jones (who died years ago in Memphis) and Mrs. E.T. Fountain (recently

      deceased) late of DuQuoin, granddaughter of Gov. John Dougherty of Cairo, niece of George M. Dougherty,

      died 28 Jan 1886, at the residence of Helen A. Schuchardt in Jonesboro, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery.

13 Feb 1886:

Emery B. Baker died 6 Feb 1886, one mile north of Cobden, and was buried in Cobden Cemetery.

20 Feb 1886:

Lizzie (Penrod) Lee, wife of W.K. Lee, died last week.  She left a husband and child.

J. Lawson Roberts died 7 Feb 1886, of catarrhal pneumonia, and was buried in Lick Creek.  He left a

wife and a large family.

Son of Thomas Brown was killed by a falling tree south of Jonesboro.

Mary J. Samson, wife of Joseph H. Samson and daughter of Francis H. Brown (deceased) died Wednesday (17 Feb

     1886) at her residence in Jonesboro of chlorosis, aged 44 years, 11 months, 26 days, and was buried in Jonesboro

      Cemetery.  She left a husband and three children.  Carrol Brown was her  brother.

27 Feb 1886:

Susan B. Fisher, mother of Mrs. Skehan, died Monday (22 Feb 1886) at the residence of Parker Earle,

and was buried in Cobden Cemetery.

Elizabeth Kimmel died Monday (22 Feb 1886) at the residence of her son-in-law, Henry Rinehart, age 83 years, and

      was buried in Kimmel Graveyard at the old homestead.  She was born in Dayton, Ohio, married George Kimmel

     (who died in 1868) at aged 17, and came to Union County in 1832.  She had 12 children, seven of whom were

      living, and 100 grandchildren.

Mahalia Jane Coats, wife of Charles Coats, died 19 Feb 1886, at the residence of her father one mile south of

      Jonesboro, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery.

Christopher Mattheis hanged himself Sunday (21 Feb 1886) three miles south of Anna.

6 Mar 1886:

Funeral of John Casey, brother of Mrs. Boren of Alto Pass, was held in Big Muddy bottoms Sunday (28 Feb 1886).

Diana Fenton, widow of James W. Fenton (lately deceased) died at her residence two miles west of Cobden, aged

      70 years, 4 months, 14 days, and was buried in Cobden Cemetery.

13 Mar 1886:

Walter Loomis, brother of O.P. Loomis of Urbana, died last Thursday (11 Mar 1886) of apoplexy at his residence southeast of Makanda, and was buried in the new Baptist cemetery in Makanda.

Rev. John W. Robinson Jr. died 3 Mar 1886, in Carbondale, Jackson County.  He was born 12 Mar 1857,

and married on 25 Jul 1880, Hattie Hargrave. 

John A. O’Neil, son of Charles O’Neil, died 6 Mar 1886, at the residence of his parents of rheumatism of the heart,

       aged 6 years, 20 days.  (See also 20 Mar 1886, issue.)

20 Mar 1886:

Grandma Lemons died 10 Mar 1886, at the residence of her daughter, Mrs. S.J. Whitehead, of  heart disease, aged

     70 years, and was buried in the Lamer burying ground.

Grandma Adkinson died 14 Mar 1886, at Jessen's Mill.

Mrs. Susan Worstman died 9 Mar 1886, aged 68 years.

E.C. McGahey died 13 Mar 1886, at his residence in Pulaski County, aged about 50 years, and was

buried in Anna Cemetery.  He left an invalid wife and two sons.  (See also 27 Mar 1886, issue.)

Virgil Beale died last Friday (12 Mar 1886), in Cobden, aged 50 years, and was buried in Phelps, N.Y. 

This is the fourth Beale to die on a Friday and be taken away by train on Sunday.  Only one is left, the wife of the deceased.

F.M. McIntosh was shot and killed 2 Mar 1886, at his house eight miles west of Vienna, Johnson

County, by James Arnett, Miles Newton and Henry Newton.  They were found not guilty of murder.  (See also 27 Nov 1886, issue)

27 Mar 1886:

John C. Peeler, father of Thomas Peeler of Bucyrus, Ohio, died 25 Mar 1886, at his residence in Anna,

aged 76 years, 5 months, 11 days, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery.  He was born in 1809 in North Carolina and emigrated with parents to Tennessee and to Dongola in 1819.  He married Sarah Hess, who died 10 years ago.  He left four children and six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.  Mrs. Mays and Mrs. Karaker of Dongola were his sisters.  (See also 13 Nov 1886, issue.)

3 Apr 1886:

Margaret B. Hawkins, widow of Dr. Hawkins, mother-in-law of E.A. Kimmel of Jackson, Mich., died   27 Mar

     1886, at her residence three miles northwest of Cobden, and was buried in Cobden Cemetery.

Charles Kraper was killed by a train near mile 27 in Dongola.  He had a brother living in Metropolis, Massac County.

Phoebe Klinen, sister of Mrs. Peter Herin of Cobden, died 24 Mar 1886, and was buried in Cobden Cemetery.

10 Apr 1886:

Ophelia O’Rourke, wife of I.H. O’Rourke, died 5 Apr 1886, in Jonesboro, aged 32 years, and was

buried in Jonesboro Cemetery.

George Brown, son of Leonard Brown, died 3 Apr 1886, in Springville, aged 11 years.

17 Apr 1886:

Mary Blount, wife of James Blount, died 1 Apr 1886, in Alto Pass, aged 31 years.

Jennie (Holbomb) Field, wife of C.G. Field, died 9 Apr 1886, at her residence at 450 Belden Ave., Chicago,

      of malarial fever, and was buried in Galesburg.

1 May 1886:

James S. Childers died 18 Apr 1886, at his residence near Pleasant Hill, Williamson County, aged 89

years, 3 months, 14 days, and was buried in Mt. Tabor Cemetery, Cottage Home, Williamson County.  He was born in North Carolina, moved to Benton Co., Tenn., as a boy and in 1859 to Pleasant Hill.  He had no children, but raised many "fatherless children."  (See also 4 Sep 1886, issue.)

Daughter of Q. Province, aged 6 years, died first of last week in Alto Pass.

Joseph Lufkin of Villa Ridge died 25 Apr 1886, of gangrene and stroke of paralysis, at the residence of     his son, J.E. Lufkin in Anna, aged 81 years, and was buried in Villa Ridge.  He was born in

Maine and moved to Illinois in 1869, following his sons, James H. Lufkin and J.E. Lufkin.  In

1878 he celebrated his 50th wedding anniversary.  He left a wife, four sons and one daughter, Mrs. W.H. Thomas, of LaGrange, Mo.

8 May 1886:

Florence Parker, wife of J. Monroe Parker, died 3 May 1886, in northeast part of county, aged 23 years, and

       was buried in Jonesboro.  She left a husband and three children.

Alfred Young, stepson of Ned Dent, "colored," died last Saturday (1 May 1886) of consumption, and was buried in

      Anna Cemetery.  "He was born and raised here and for several years was the only youthful representative of his

       race in our city."

15 May 1886:

Elzada (Flanagan) Brewer died last Sunday (9 May 1886) of typhoid fever.

M. Sayles died last week near Springer School of typhoid fever.

D.C. Barber died 23 Apr 1886, in Denver, Colo., formerly resided in Tamaroa.

Mrs. Jacob Barnhart died 12 May 1886, south of Jonesboro, aged 62 years, and was buried in St. John’s              Cemetery.  She resided in Union County 66 years.  (See also 29 May 1886, issue).

22 May 1886:

Columbus P. Bryant, stepson of J. Henry Abbott, was killed near Makanda trying to leave a moving train, and was

       buried in the new Baptist cemetery on the hill in Makanda.

Son of Richard Ring, aged 12 years, died 11 May 1886, after being run over by a train leaving a DeSoto coal mine.

Alex McIntyre was struck by lightning and instantly killed last Tuesday three miles south of Sparta.

Lella Anderson, daughter of Hugh Anderson, died 16 May 1886, at the residence of her parents three miles south of

      Anna, aged 11 years, and was buried in Anna Cemetery.

Antone Hillman was run over by a train and killed Tuesday (18 May 1886).  He was a railroad laborer at the tunnel

      four miles north of Jonesboro.

29 May 1886:

Calvin Jones, of Anna, son of the late Anderson Jones, was shot and killed Tuesday (25 May 1886) near

Alto Pass by Jasper Crews (age 23), and was buried in Anna.  Crews got 25 years in prison for murder. (See also 2 Oct 1886, and 7 Sep 1895, issues.)

Ed Freeman was shot in the head and killed by city marshal James Pyle in DuQuoin Saturday (22 May 1886).

Sidney J. Moore and son Orcenith Moore, aged 9, were killed by lightning at their residence one and a

half miles south of Nashville.

James K. Walton committed suicide Sunday (23 May 1886) at his residence one mile east of Anna, and was buried in

      Jonesboro Cemetery.  Born 18 May 1825, in Lancaster Co., Pa., came to Union Count in 1853, married 26 Mar

     1854, Mrs. Serena A. Walker, daughter of Winstead Davie.  He had nine children, seven living:  Winstead D.,

     Mary E., Edward B., James K., William B., Charles A., and Samuel D.

Jonnie M. Ury, son of J.L. and E. Ury died 21 May 1886, in Jonesboro, aged 4 years, 24 days, and was

buried in St. John's Cemetery.

Jacob Barnhart died 20 May 1886, and was buried in St. John's Cemetery.

Mrs. Wood, mother of Jesse and Monroe Wood, died Wednesday (26 May 1886), aged 65 years.  She resided in

      Anna some 30 years.

5 Jun 1886:

Mary E. Corgan died 29 May 1886, at the residence of her mother in Alto Pass of consumption, aged 27 years, and

      was buried in Limestone Cemetery.

G.A. Harrison was killed by a train in Ullin, Pulaski County, Tuesday (1 Jun 1886).  He was from

Kentucky and employed at the saw mill of William Brown of Dongola.

Daughter of Richard Bowker of Collinsville, was killed in Smithsboro Monday a week ago in a buggy accident,

      aged 5 years.

Daughter of F.S. Briner of Lick Prairie was killed by a horse Tuesday, aged 6 years.

Frederick Kotchaw, aged German from Kinmundy, found dead Sunday.

12 Jun 1886:

Frederick Eisenhart hanged himself in the jail in Mt. Carmel.  His son was sent to the asylum the day before.

19 Jun 1886:

John C. Ware killed himself 18 Jun 1886, at his residence in southwest part of Jonesboro, aged 70 years. 

He first shot his wife, Mary (Rinehart) Ware, aged about 40 years, whom he married a few years

ago.  A 14-year-old son called for help and the wife survived.

3 Jul 1886:

Sally Deming, wife of John J. Deming, died Thursday last week (24 Jun 1886), aged 70 years.

10 Jul 1886:

Infant child of William Copeland died 9 Jul 1886, in Dongola.

Newton Meisenheimer died 8 Jul 1886, at his residence near Makanda, aged 36 years, 8 months, 28 days,

and was buried in Anna Cemetery.   (See also 17 Jul 1886, and 14 Aug 1886,  issues).

Susan Underwood died last Thursday (8 Jul 1886) and was buried in Mt. Tabor Cemetery.

Catherine Biggs, wife of Elder Davis W. Biggs, died 7 Jul 1886, at her residence near Limestone Church of

       inflammation of the liver, aged 71 years.  She was born in Pennsylvania and resided in Union County

       nearly 50 years.

24 Jul 1886:

Mrs. Corzine, daughter of Thomas Bean, died in the bottoms recently, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery.

D.Y. Oliver, kinsman of L.C. Oliver, died Tuesday (20 Jul 1886) and was buried in the Odd Fellows

Cemetery.  He was born 4 Nov 1836.  He left a wife, three sons and one daughter.  (See also 31 Jul 1886, 16 Oct 1886, and 25 Dec 1886, issues)

Irish John of Anna was killed by a train last Saturday (17 Jul 1886), aged 20-25 years, and was buried in Anna.

31 Jul 1886:

Harrison Fagoly committed suicide near Mt. Vernon, Jefferson County, 3 Jul 1886.

7 Aug 1886:

Frank Conyers died two weeks ago of consumption.  He was the last male representative of the old family from

       around Villa Ridge, Pulaski County.

Alice Hopkins, daughter of Elijah L. Hopkins, died last Friday (30 Jul 1886) of erysipelas in Makanda.

Anna Ecker, wife of John Ecker, died 31 Jul 1886, aged 70 years, 29 days.  She was born in Upper

Ostrah (Austria?), Germany, 2 Jul 1816, and came to America in 1853.  She had 12 children, five died in Germany, one died at sea and one died here, five were living:  Mrs. M. Hehenberger, Mrs. John Drexler, Mrs. Barnhart, Susan Ecker and John Ecker Jr.

Mrs. Marion Winter died last Saturday (31 Jul 1886) at her residence on Uncle Billy Spence's Cedar Creek farm

        in Makanda.

14 Aug 1886:

Pauline Faehr, wife of Fred Faehr, died 8 Aug 1886, in Jonesboro, aged 34 years, 4 months, and was

buried in Jonesboro Cemetery.  She left five children.

Susan A. Black died last Monday (9 Aug 1886) at the residence of her son, Dr. J.I. Hale, aged 60 years, 3

months, 23 days, and was buried in Anna Cemetery.

21 Aug 1886:

John Riley was shot and killed in White County 29 Jul 1886, by Harvey Wollum (age 15).

Willis Morris was stabbed to death by William Berry last summer.  Berry was arrested in Dallas Co.,  Texas.

Old Man Finley murdered his wife in Carmi, White County, some time since.  His sons, Charley and

Matt Finley were living near Blagg Schoolhouse.

George Maxey Baggott, son of O.P. and Ruth Baggott, died 15 Aug 1886, of congestive chill, age 9

years, 28 days, and was buried in Anna Cemetery.  He left parents and brothers and sisters.

28 Aug 1886:

Mrs. John Egner died 24 Aug 1886, in Mill Creek of diphtheria.

James Morgan died at his residence in Carbondale, Jackson County, Friday last week (20 Aug 1886).  He

was born in Union County.

Lydia Spence, wife of William Spence, died last week of epileptic neuralgia in Makanda.

4 Sep 1886:

William H. Cox was buried in Mt. Tabor Cemetery, Cottage Home, Williamson County.

William F. Tismer, youngest son of William F. Tismer, formerly of Jonesboro, died 26 Aug 1886, in                     Henrietta, Texas, aged 17 years, 11 months, 8 days.

Son of Simon Cerney, aged 7, was shot and killed four miles northeast of Anna by Oscar Hambrick (age 17 years),

      and was buried in the Catholic cemetery in Cobden.

Emma Dillow, daughter of L.A. Dillow, died in Springville, aged 16 years, 9 months, and was buried in

St. John's Cemetery.

Henry Lentz of Wetaug, Pulaski County, died last week.  He was a justice of the peace in Pulaski County

and a Civil War veteran.

11 Sep 1886:

Henry L. McGinnis, a young man, died last Saturday (4 Sep 1886) in Cobden of typhoid fever.

18 Sep 1886:

John Webb was hit on the head with a shovel by Silas Ray of Iuka Township, Marion County April 1886.

Child of John Jackson, of Odin, accidentally fell in a kettle and died.

Scott Hendricks, of St. John’s, fell into a boiling vat at the salt works 10 days ago and died.

25 Sep 1886:

Twin children of L. Wilson of Dongola born recently died.  They were buried a week ago Wednesday.

Child of James Sweney of Anna died Friday (24 Sep 1886), and was buried in Anna.

George T. St. John died 21 Sep 1886, at his residence two miles east of Anna, of hemorrhage of lungs, aged about

      53 years.

2 Oct 1886:

Daughter of Lewis P. Noel died Sunday (26 Sep 1886) of typhoid fever at Makanda.

Emma Safriet, daughter of Thomas Safriet, was buried Tuesday (28 Sep 1886), aged 13 years.

9 Oct 1886:

Edwin G. Robinson died 2 Oct 1886, in Anna of apoplexy, aged about 60 years, and was buried in Schoolcraft,

        Mich.  He resided in Union County 12 years.

16 Oct 1886:

The funeral of Samuel Spence was last Saturday (9 Oct 1886) in Villa Ridge, Pulaski County.

J.W. Penry died Friday (15 Oct 1886) in Dongola, and was buried in Makanda.

Son of Frederick Johnson, of Dongola, died some time ago.

Miss Josie Cruse died 9 Oct 1886, aged about 18 years, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery.

23 Oct 1886:

Daughter of L.B. Smith died.

30 Oct 1886:

Funeral of the Rev. M.A. Marlow was to be the second Sunday in November at Campground Church.

Harry Boyd, son of Jerry Boyd, accidentally shot himself Wednesday (27 Oct 1886) east of Anna, aged about

       15 years.

William Mowery died of typhoid pneumonia at Springville.  His father was paralyzed when Will was a small boy.

6 Nov 1886:

T. Maxwell died 1 Oct 1886, aged nearly 79 years.  He was born in Kentucky and came to Illinois in

1827.  In 1833 he settled in Hillard Township, Macoupin County.  He had 13 children, of whom seven survived him.  He left a wife and 83 descendants.

Sheriff Gertskemper of Nashville died 23 Oct 1886.

Son of James Snyder of Nashville died 23 Oct 1886.

Mrs. Galbreth, of Villa Ridge, Pulaski County, died a week ago Sunday (24 Oct 1886)of paralysis.  She

left a husband and a large family of children.

Mrs. Henry Delaney of Villa Ridge, Pulaski County, niece by marriage of Dr. Casey of Mound City,

Pulaski County, died last week of malarial fever, aged 21 years.

13 Nov 1886:

(Cornelius) McGuire was hanged in Jonesboro in 1835.  He confessed to murdering three wives and a divorced wife

       watched him hang.

Dan Webster was murdered in Anna in 1854.

John Brown was hanged in Jonesboro in 1854 for the murder of Dan Webster.

Youngest child of Dallas McCam of Cobden died last week.  This was the first death in a family of 10 children.

20 Nov 1886:

Mrs. Martha Penrod, wife of Millington Penrod, died 9 Nov 1886, at her residence five miles east of  Dongola,

       and was buried in Friendship Cemetery.  She left a brother and a sister.

27 Nov 1886:

Mrs. Laura A. Lamer, wife of Walter Lamer died 11 Nov 1886, two miles north of Cobden, and was

buried in Limestone Cemetery.  She left a husband and four small boys.

Jacob Rendleman died three miles north of Jonesboro, aged 78 years, 7 months, 22 days.  He was born

30 Mar 1808, in Rowan Co., N.C., and came to Union County in 1816.  He married on 11 Jun 1826, Rachel Hartline (died 20 May 1860).  He married 2nd on 25 Sep 1862, Mary E. Wilson.  By the first marriage he had seven sons and three daughters.  By the second marriage he had two boys and three girls and four stepchildren.  Children mentioned were  John Rendleman, William Rendleman, Mastin Rendleman, Jacob Rendleman, George Rendleman, Jefferson Rendleman, Marshall Rendleman, Mrs. William Cox, and Mrs. John Lamer, of Bridgeport, Kan.

George W. Austen died this week, aged 83.  He was formerly of Watertown, Wis., and came to Union

County at the beginning of the Civil War.

4 Dec 1886:

"Grandma" Sarah A. Meisenheimer, wife of John A. Meisenheimer, died at the residence of her son-in-law,

      J.J. Rendleman, near Makanda of chronic bronchitis.  She was the mother of Newt Meisenheimer (deceased)

      and Mrs. J.J. Rendleman (only child living).  She had nine children, five died between ages 5 and 9.

Capt. T. Wilson, postmaster in Cairo, Alexander County, died last Friday (26 Nov 1886) in Eureka Springs, Mo.  He

      was born 23 Jul 1823, in England, and came to Cairo in 1854.  He was in the Mexican War and Civil War.

Anton Steinmeir of Staunton was killed by a train Monday.

James Harmon accidentally shot himself 20 Nov 1886, in Red Bud.

11 Dec 1886:

Boston Lilly, of Oakville, died at his residence last Monday (6 Dec 1886) of typhoid fever.  He left a wife and three

      children.

John Bennett was burned to death in Staunton a few days ago.

Archibald Strahl was killed by Sarah J. Stephenson at Litchfield 5 Jun 1886.

Thomas Stahl, son of John Stahl was killed in a coal mine accident Friday.

Charles Loehr drowned in the river at Alton, Madison County, Tuesday last week.

John R. Pickard was killed by Jacob Ward in Wabash County.

Herman Blickenderfer, brother of Supt. Blickenderfer, was accidentally shot 90 miles north of                         Ontario, Ore., by John Symonson.  He was 22 years, and was buried in Lebanon, Mo.

A.L. Champion from Smithland, Ky., was shot in Anna by City Marshall John Jones Thursday (2 Dec 1886) and died

      3 Dec 1886.  A jury found that Jones was not justified in shooting him.  (See also 2 May 1896, issue.)

      Jones got six years (4 Jun 1887, issue).

18 Dec 1886:

Dr. B.F. Ross, brother of Samuel Ross of St. Louis, died 15 Dec 1886, in Cobden, aged 54 years, 4 months, 5 days,,

      and was buried in Cobden Cemetery.  He was born in Pennsylvania 10 Aug 1832, and came to Cobden in 1859.

      He left a wife, one grown son and a married daughter.  (See also 25 Dec 1886, issue)

Arthur Willard, youngest son of E.A. Willard died Monday (13 Dec 1886) in St. Louis, and was buried in Jonesboro.

Sarah Davis, mother of C.H. Davis of Anna, died at her residence south of Anna a few days ago, aged 70 years.

25 Dec 1886:

Harvey Cady Bouton, son of T.F. Bouton, died 19 Dec 1886, of phthisis pulmonalis in Anna, aged 30

years, 5 months, 21 days, and was buried in Anna Cemetery.  He was born 28 Jun 1856, in Centreville, Mich., and came to Jonesboro in 1866.  He was editor of the Farmer & Fruit Grower; his father was editor of Jonesboro Gazette.  He left a wife and three children.

Sarah Ann Hicks, youngest daughter of James K. Cochran (deceased), died 12 Dec 1886, at Makanda.

B.F. McDaniel, youngest son of Henry McDaniel, died 14 Dec 1886, of heart disease at the residence of his father

       two miles north of Cobden.

C.B. Dishon of Jackson County died Wednesday (22 Dec 1886) in Murphysboro.  He was reared in Jonesboro.

8 Jan 1887:

Nettie A. Miller, daughter of A.J. Miller of Cobden, died 27 Dec 1889, of diphtheria, aged 4 years, 2

months, 12 days, and was buried in Cobden Cemetery.

      consumption, and was buried in Mt. Pisgah Cemetery. He was born in Smithland, Livingston Co., Ky., 5 Jul 1854.

Emma Lewis, wife of J.W. Lewis of Alto Pass, died 30 Dec 1886, aged 25 years, 2 months, 18 days, and was buried

      in Anna Cemetery. She left two children, twin boys age 4 years, parents, husband, brothers and sisters.

Edna Davidson, wife of Henry Davidson and daughter of James P. McLain, died 31 Dec 1886, of

quick consumption, aged 18 years and a few days. She married about 1 Sep 1886.

Elizabeth (Martin) Rhoades died 24 Dec 1886, aged 61 years, 5 months, 2 days, and was buried in Tripp

      Cemetery.  She was born 22 Jul 1825, and married on 1 Jul 1843, John N. Rhoades. She had five daughters and five sons; four sons, three daughters and 22 grandchildren survive.

Alfred Firestone died 5 Jan 1887, aged 78 years.

George Bowers was murdered at Newton recently.

Eliza Kiger, wife of J.R. Kiger, died 7 Jan 1887, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery.  She was the

daughter of G.W Hall. J.R. Kiger returned with his son, George Kiger, to St. Francis, Ark., after the burial, then made a new home in Phoenix, Ariz. (See also 5 Feb 1887, and 26 Feb 1887, issues)

Mrs. Ervin Keer died 19 Jan 1887, near Moscow.

John R. Allen Jr. died 21 Jan 1887. He married the daughter of F. Neibauer several years ago.

Mr. and Mrs. James Molahan died 15 Jan 1887, near Taylorsville when their sleigh was struck by a train. He was

       55 years old and left seven children.

Mary Hoxie Wier, oldest surviving settler of Madison County, died at Edwardsville Sunday, aged 76

years. She came from Kentucky with her parents in 1817 on account of Indians, lived at Fort Russell, two miles north of Edwardsville, and in 1839 married Dr. John H. Wier.

Thomas Westbrook was killed by a falling tree 14 Jan 1887, near Litchfield.

Rev. F.M. Richardson died 30 Jan 1887, at Dongola.

Mrs. David Moore died 28 Jan 1887, of puerperal fever, aged about 40 years. She left a husband and

several children.

The funeral of Mrs. Lewis Faulkner, sister of John Maxfield, was Sunday (30 Jan 1887).

12 Feb 1887:

F.R. Simpson died of blood poisoning from a bite on his thumb from his 3-year-old child, at his residence

       near Hillsboro.

John Frohand of Sparta was accidentally killed in hunting accident Wednesday last week (2 Feb

1887), aged 49 years. He left a widow and three children. He was a Civil War veteran.

Stella Harris, daughter of John Harris, died Sunday (6 Feb 1887) in Makanda of capillary bronchitis, aged 5 months.

Ida Verble died 6 Feb 1887, of typhoid fever at the residence of her parents five miles south of Anna,

      aged about 18 years.

G. Van Powell died 10 Jan 1887, of affection of the throat, aged 21 years, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery.

William Perry Coleman, only child of S.C. and R. Coleman, died 16 Feb 1887, in Anna, aged 1 year,

3 months, 16 days.

Mrs. Roberts, mother of Mrs.M. Vick, died 11 Feb 1887, in Marion, aged 81 years.

Ada Maud Rendleman, only daughter of Philip J. and Katie H. Rendleman, died 26 Feb 1887, aged

6 years, 3 months, 18 days, and was buried in Evergreen Cemetery.

Mrs. W.R. Hughs died 23 Feb 1887, in Dongola, aged 20 years.

A.J. Hall died 26 Feb 1887, of pneumonia at his residence a few miles east of Anna, aged 33 years, and was buried

       in Campground Cemetery. Born in Floyd Co., Va., moved to Anna in 1873. He left a wife and five children.

Son of R.S. Reynolds of Cape Girardeau, Mo., died recently in Indiana, and was buried in Cape Girardeau.

Christian G. Flaugh died 25 Feb 1887, at the residence of his son-in-law, Moses Lingle, south of Jonesboro, and was

       buried in Jonesboro Cemetery. He was born 26 Mar 1821, in Union County, and married on 25 Mar 1841,

       Nancy A McIntosh. He had five daughters and one son, of whom two children survive.

George T. Watkins, son of T.J. Watkins, died and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery. He married in

the fall of 1885, Sadie Sanford. (See also 12 Mar 1887, issue.)

Maud Hartman Miller, infant daughter of Clinton H. and Carrie H. Miller, and sister of Minnie Miller,

died Tuesday (8 Mar 1887) of convulsions from whooping cough.

Nancy Vancil, widow of Benjamin Vancil, died Monday (21 Mar 1887) at her residence two miles east of Cobden,

       aged nearly 70 years, and was buried in Mt. Tabor Cemetery, three miles west of Cobden near her former home.

Warren Anderson, son of J.H. Anderson, died 21 Mar 1887, aged 6 years, and was buried in the

I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Dongola.

Joseph Henry Hinkle died 16 Mar 1887, at the residence of his father, Peter Hinkle, four and a half miles

east of Anna, aged 23 years, 6 months, 14 days. His funeral was at Campground 12 Jun 1887. (See also the 16 Apr 1887, 30 Apr 1887, and 18 Jun 1887, issues.)

Francis Henry Richardson died 23 Mar 1887, at his residence in Anna of pneumonia.

Robert H. Henderson died 19 Mar 1887, at his residence in Anna. He was born 20 Ju1 1859, in Randolph

Co., Ill. He left a mother, a brother and a sister.

Adde Aden died last Tuesday (29 Mar 1887) from attack by his bull in Dongola, aged 56 years, and was

1887, of rheumatism at the residence of her father near Banner Hill, aged 20 years, 9 months, 11 days, and was buried in Water Valley Cemetery.

Mary Brown, daughter of Abram Brown, sister of Hiram Brown of Mill Creek, sister of J.W.

Brown and W.T. Brown of Anna, died 6 Apr 1887, in Anna, aged 36 years, 6 months, and was buried in the old homestead cemetery five miles east of Anna.

Col. I.S. Warmoth of Salem, father of Henry Warmoth former govemor of Louisiana, died 23 Mar

1887, aged 73 years. He was a Mexican War veteran.

Son of Eli Osment died 3 Apr 1887, in Dongola, aged 6 years.

Jimmy Spann, second son of James L. and Mollie E. Spann of Alto Pass, burned to death in a barn fire,

aged 2 years, 7 months, 8 days, and was buried in Lamer Cemetery. 

16 Apr 1887:

Daniel Eddleman, son of Susan Eddleman of Springville and brother of T.J. Eddleman of Du Quoin,

died 31 Mar 1887, at the residence of his brother J.J. Eddleman in Santa Barbara, Calif., of lead poisoning from mining in Colorado. (See also 14 May 1887, issue.)

James George died 11 Apr 1887, in Dongola.

23 Apr 1887:

Mrs. Arthur Terry was poisoned with arsenic by husband in June 1886 in Aurora. He was arrested in

New Orleans.

Grandma Spence died Friday (15 Apr 1887) in Makanda.

Mrs. Tom C. Prickett died Sunday (17 Apr 1887) in Makanda.

Funeral of Mrs. Baldwin was last Friday (15 Apr 1887) in Anna.

H.G. Plater died 4 Apr 1887, in Imboden, Ark., and was buried in Imboden, Ark.  He was raised in Union County.

30 Apr 1887:

John Rusk was killed in an accident at Boyd's coal mine last Saturday, aged 65 years. He was born in

Scotland. He left a wife and six children.

John W. Berry was murdered near Moro then placed on the train tracks a few days ago.

Cornelius Sego, of Moro, was killed by a train 9 Apr 1887, at Edwardsville Crossing.

Mrs. Nathan Killman, of east of Assumption, died of lockjaw a week after stepping on a rusty nail.

M.D. Bruce died 6 Apr 1887, at Centralia, aged 76 years. He was a Black Hawk War and Mexican War veteran.

Stepdaughter of John Caswell died about three months ago. Dr. Blanchard was sued for malpractice and

tried for manslaughter for giving her croton oil. He was found not guilty (See also the 7 May 1887, issue)

7 May 1887:

Cephas H. Washburn, cousin of Hon. E.B. Washburne and the  Adams family of Massachusetts, died at

the poor house in Peoria Wednesday, aged 70 years.

Henry Damme hanged himself in his jail cell in Edwardsville last week. He was indicted for assault to

murder his wife.

Daughter of Daniel Sietz was burned to death near Cerro Gordo, aged 7 years.

James Maher, of Patoka, died Wednesday. He was a Mexican War veteran.

J.R. Kiger, father of Frank Kiger, died in Omaha, Neb., Thursday last week (28 Apr 1887) of erysipelas.

14 May 1887:

Hezekiah Gibeaut fell of his horse and died three miles west of Makanda Friday (6 May 1887), and was

buried in Rowan Cemetery near Makanda.

Three Welch children were burned to death in White Wright, Texas. They recently moved from Illinois.

James Hill shot himself at Moore's Prairie, Jefferson County, a few days ago.

Mr. Wilson, from Scott Co., Mo., a student at the Normal school in Cape Girardeau, Mo., drowned in the

river there last Tuesday (10 May 1887)

21 May 1887:

Roscoe Parris, an artist, died 12 May 1887, aged 67 years. He came to Union County 15 years ago.

Valira D.P. Hewes, wife of Thomas B.Hewes, died 13 May 1887, at her residence in Jonesboro, aged 50 years,

      10 months, 28 days, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery. She left a husband, and one son, John M. Hewes.

28 May 1887:

John Hunter was struck by train in Makanda Tuesday (24 May 1887), aged 64 years, 6 months, 8 days,

and was buried in Evergreen Cemetery. He had resided in Makanda since October 1860.

 George Snyder died 21 May 1887, one miles north of Cobden, aged 67 years, 3 months, 19 days, and was  

buried in Cobden Cemetery. He was born 2 Mar 1822, in Susquehanna Co., Pa.  At about aged

20,  he moved to New York, and in June 1852 he married in Rochester, N.Y., Sophia Jane Butler.  In 1852 he moved to New Orleans, and in spring of 1858 he moved to Cobden.

Cy Johnson, "Negro" was killed 5 Jul 1883, while riding on Illinois Central railroad pulling out of

Cobden by Fred Perry, "mulatto." Perry, originally from Mississippi, left for Indian Nation,

but was arrested in Newport, Ark., and brought to Union County for trial. He got 99 years. (See also the 4 Jun 1887, issue.)

4 Jun 1887:

William F. Longley died 27 May 1887, in Cobden, aged 72 years, 9 months, 21 days, and was buried in

Cobden Cemetery. He was born 6 Aug 1814, in Howley, Franklin Co., Mass., and married in 1842 in Massachusetts Lydia Bassett.  He moved to Wisconsin in 1855 and to Union County in January 1866. He left a wife; three daughters, Mrs. Lee of Pawnee City, Neb., Mrs. LT. Linnell of Cobden, Mrs. H.A. Dwinnell of Minnesota; one son, William Longley of Chicago; and numerous grandchildren.

AC. Westerman died Wednesday (1 Jun 1887) at his residence in Anna, aged about 28 years, and was

buried in Anna Cemetery. Left a wife and little son. Came from St. Louis, where he has brothers, about three years ago. (See also 11 Jun 1887, issue)

Bayless G. Peadro of Whitley Township, Moultrie County, died at Illinois Southern Hospital for the Insane from injuries

       received from Aimon, a patient.

11 Jun 1887:

David Ford Phillips, son of AJ. and Imelda days. Phillips, died 5 Jun 1887, aged 3 months, 20 days.

18 Jun 1887:

James Perkins drowned in Okaw River near Vandalia. He left a wife and children.

Elmer Bloompot fell from a tree near Pekin, aged 12 years.

Solom Rogers accidentally shot himself to death in Salem Township, Knox County.

Elmer Rial, of Walnut Hill, Marion County, was poisoned to death.

Frank D. Holcomb, third son of Charles D. and Nettie Holcomb, shot himself last Saturday (11 Jun 1887)

and died Sunday, 12 Jun 1887, aged 22 years, 7 months, 23 days, and was buried in Cobden Cemetery.  He was born 19 Oct 1864, in Lockport, III.

25 Jun 1887:

Infant of James Johnson of Alto Pass died last week of measles and catarrhal fever, and was buried in

Limestone Cemetery.

Mrs. George W. Evans of Mt Vernon, Jefferson County, daughter of Lt. Gov. Anderson, died 9 Jun 1887.

Jacob Baker of three miles back of Brooklyn, Massac County, was poisoned. He left a wife and children.

French Keller of Saratoga was accidentally poisoned last Friday (17 Jun 1887). He left brothers, Henry

W. Keller of Delassus, Mo., and Robert Keller of St. Francis, Ark., and a brother-in-law, Dr. T.J. Rich. Dr. Rich's wife accidentally sent night shade instead of morphine. He married Martha Miller, daughter of Moses Miller. He left no children.

            Sumpter Hall, engineer, was killed in a train accident two miles south of Makanda last Saturday (18 Jun  1887).

J.W. “Parson" Hays died in Oakland, Calif.

Dallas Weaver, brother-in-law of Paul Dillow, died 20 Jun 1887, in Springville of consumption, and was

            buried in St. John's Cemetery.

Son of George Dillow died of croup in Springville, aged nearly 1 year, and was buried in St. John's Cemetery.

2 Jul 1887:

One of the triplets (all boys) of Fred Langreder of near Brockmeier Settlement near Edwardsville died

Monday. They were born Friday.

E.O. Freeman died 28 Jun 1887, aged 74 years, and was buried in Cobden Cemetery. He left a wife and son.

9 Jul 1887:

Son of Elijah McGee, aged 4 years, was kicked by a horse at Lively Prairie and died Saturday.

Emma (Ferrill) McKenzie, wife of Adam McKenzie and second living daughter of Eastwood Ferrill,

died last Sunday (3 Ju11887) at Pomona Ridge, three miles north of Makanda, from being thrown from a horse. She had been married but a few weeks.

Edward Clark, son of Prof. J.C.C. Clark of Upper Alton, drowned in a lake near Chicago 18 Jun       1887.

Henry Stone died 27 Jun 1887, aged 73 years, and was buried in the family burying ground on his farm.

He left a wife and a large family of children and grandchildren.

16 Jul1887:

Infant of C.P. Dawson of Cobden died last week and was buried in Ashley.

Jasper Crews died first of the week of measles in prison. His father brought him home for burial.

Joseph Kollehner died 11 Jul 1887, aged 63 years, 6 months, 22 days. He was born 2 Dec 1823, in

Breitenrich, Upper Austria, baptized 19 Dec 1823, confirmed in 1837, and married in 1848 Theresa Haberfellner.  In 1853 he came to America and settled at Kornthal, two miles south of Jonesboro. He had five children. He left a wife, one daughter, Mrs. John Ransmeier, and three sons.

23 Jul 1887:

William J. Hunsaker, brother of Alderman Hunsaker, died Monday (18 Ju11887) from overheating,

aged 41 years, 8 months, 3 days, and was buried in Anna Cemetery. He left a wife and no children.

Corwin E. Cover, infant son of J.M. and Olive Cover, died 18 Jul1887, and was buried in Anna Cemetery.

30 Jul 1887:

Peter Schneider was crushed to death by a train at Waterloo depot last Thursday.

MichaelQuinn was stabbed to death near Alto Pass 5 Ju1 1887.

William Casper, oldest son of T.P. Casper, died 22 Ju11887, at the residence of his father, three miles

east of Cobden, of typhoid fever, aged 20 years. There were two other cases of typhoid in the family, Ida Casper and Jackie Casper. (See also 13 Aug 1887, and 10 Sep 1887, issues.)

6 Aug 1887:

Susie M. Meisenheimer, wife of W.S. Meisenheimer of Dongola, daughter of William and Sarah

Briggs, died 30 Ju11887, aged 30 years, and was buried in I.O.O.F. Cemetery. She was born 20 Feb 1857, in Nashville, Tenn.  She moved to Jonesboro with parents when 4 and later moved to Anna. She married 18 Jun 1878. She left three children ages 8, 6 and 2. Ben F. Briggs of Mayfield, Ky., attended her funeral.

William Kucker drowned in a well in Red Bud 19 Ju1 1887.

Robert Baker was scalded to death crossing bridge with a traction engine near Perrysville.

Mr. Johnston of near Oakland, Coles County, died from rattlesnake bite.

Isaiah Ralston died Friday last week when a brick hit him in the back of his head from an explosion of

a powder magazine in Streator. He left a wife.

Timothy Buckley died digging a well in Stanford, McLean County.

C. Boyle died Tuesday (2 Aug 1887) of consumption of the bowels in Anna, aged 53 years, and was

buried in Villa Ridge, Pulaski County. He was formerly of Cairo, Alexander County and Metropolis, Massac County. He left a wife and three sons.

13 Aug 1887:

Mamie Ara Tweedy, daughter of S.P. Tweedy, died 4 Aug 1887, aged about 9 months.

Eddie Hofner, son of John Hofner, died 10 Aug 1887, aged 7 years.

Mrs. Alfred Drummonds died Tuesday (9 Aug 1887) of typhoid in the west part of Cobden.

Infant son of J.R. Smith died Tuesday (9 Aug 1887), and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery.

Franklin Pierce Flaugh, son of Henry B. Flaugh, died 17 Ju1 1887, of rubeola, three miles

      southwest of Jonesboro, aged 29 years. He married Hattie Lewis in March 1880.

Clifford Watkins, only child of William F. and Ida Watkins, died 4 Aug 1887, at the residence of

      Henry B. Flaugh near Jonesboro, of gastro enteritis, aged 21 months, 15 days.

John E. Clarke died in Ogden, Utah, of consumption. He was a telegrapher in Mexico, formerly of

      Anna 15 years ago.

20 Aug 1887:

Mrs. Cal Penrod of Dongola died 15 Aug 1887.

William Brazzell, son of Widow Craver of Flaughtown, was killed Monday (15 Aug 1887) when

      struck by a gravel train in Jonesboro, aged 20 years.

Charles E. Brown, died 11 (?) Aug 1887, at the residence of his half brother, T.D. Craig in Dallas,

      Texas, aged 31 years. He was reared in Union County and a brother of Judge O.C. Brown.

George M. James died 11 Aug 1887, at his residence in Cobden, aged 34 years, 3 months, 19 days,

and was buried in Cobden Cemetery. He left a wife.

27 Aug 1887:

Infant child of Charles Anderson died 19 Aug 1887. The mother is not expected to live.

Mrs. G.O. Bangs of Elgin, formerly of Alto Pass, died.

Mrs. Coughanour of Carbondale, Jackson County, mother of G.W. Coughanour of Dongola, died.

Bowman Tuthill, son of H.P.Tuthill, died Saturday (20 Aug 1887), aged 5 years.

H.C. Hodges, uncle of J.P. Reese, died 1 Aug 1887, aged 85 years.

Addison Reese, uncle of J.P. Reese died 1 Aug 1887, aged 78 years.

John O’Danel died 22 Aug 1887, of old age, three miles north of Cobden, aged 84 years, 6 months.  He

had resided in Union County 57 years. He left a wife and one daughter, Mrs. J.P. Reese.

E.P. Howell died 16 Aug 1887, at his residence in Chicago.

3 Sep 1887:

Samuel Burke, of Dongola, died 30 Aug 1887, aged 21 years. He left a mother.

Mrs. Capt. M.W. Rizer, of Boone, Iowa, formerly of Jonesboro, died 12 Aug 1887, in Escanaba, Mich. Mrs. Charles E. Brown, mother of Dr. Brown and sister of John Grear and Jacob Grear, died and was

buried in Jonesboro. Her funeral was last Tuesday (30 Aug 1887). She left a husband and several children.

Charles R. Misenhimer, son of Paul Misenhimer, died 30 Aug 1887, of lung trouble, aged 27

years, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery. (See also 10 Sep 1887, issue.)

Agnes Crosby, wife of E.C. Crosby, only daughter of M. Davidson of Jonesboro, and sister of Scott Davidson,

           died 4 Sep 1887, in Du Quoin, aged 20 years, 3 months, 4 days, and was buried in Benton, Franklin County.

Isaac Smith died Sunday (4 Sep 1887) in Alto Pass of malarial fever, and was buried in Limestone

Cemetery. He had been working in a mill in Missouri. He left a widowed mother:

Anna M. Wilson died 7 Sep 1887, of cancer of the stomach, at the residence of her son-in-law, Dr.

J.I. Hale, aged 65 years, 7 months, 3 days, and was buried in Wetaug graveyard, Pulaski County. She came to Illinois when 17, and lived in Olmsted, Pulaski County. She left a large family of children and grandchildren.

17 Sep 1887:

Son of W.F. Johnson, of Dongola, died 9 Sep 1887, aged 21 days.

George May, of Mile 32 Dongola, died 13 Sep 1887, aged 33 years. (See also 24 Sep 1887, issue.)

John C. Ecker. brother-in-law of M. Hehenberger, was murdered Friday (16 Sep 1887) near southern

city limits of Jonesboro, aged about 30 years. He left a wife, four children, several sisters, and an aged father. (See also 24 Sep 1887, 1 Oct 1887, 15 Oct 1887, 17 Dec 1887, and 24 Dec 1887, issues.)

Mrs. Alanson Tinsley, eldest daughter of James Morgan, died Thursday (15 Sep 1887) four miles south

of Jonesboro.

Mary A.  Wimpy "Grandma Dilday" died 17 Sep 1887, at the residence of her daughter, Mrs. Elias

Dilday, two miles east of Alto Pass, aged 97 years, 6 months, 4 days, and was buried in Limestone Cemetery. She was the oldest person in the county. She was born 13 Mar 1790, in Lawrence, S.C., and married in 1808 William Wimpy. She left two children, Mrs. Jacob  Grear of Jonesboro and Mrs. Elias Dilday, with whom she had lived since 1869. Mrs. Rev. John M. Faris, mother of the Rev. W.W. Faris, died 14 Sep 1887, aged 71 years, and was

buried in Anna Cemetery.

Nicholas Kohler, brother of Louis Kohler and Augustus Kohler of Cobden, died 9 Sep 1887, in Anna of

chronic dysentery, and was buried in Cobden. He resided in Anna 25 years. He left a wife and three small children.

Conrad Hermann, of Waterloo, died 31 Aug 1887, after he fell through the cellar at his brewery.

24 Sep 1887:

John C. Finley, of White County, son of the wife murderer who hanged himself, was thrown from his

wagon by a runaway team and died.

William Harmon was thrown from his wagon at Carmi, White County, a few days ago and died.

Herman Slink fell in a well in Madison County and died.

1 Oct 1887:

George May was shot and killed by Daniel Kimbro in Bond County some time ago. Kimbro got

eight years for manslaughter.

Son of Mrs. C. Burke, of Glasgow, Monroe County, accidentally shot himself, aged 10 years.

William Hayes, of Elgin, was found shot dead 16 Sep 1887, in Davenport, Iowa.

8 Oct 1887:

Charles T. Harris was killed 16 Sep 1887, in a shooting affray with William P. Corbin in Sullivan, Moultrie County.

Albert Smith, son of Andrew Smith, died in Alto Pass two weeks ago of inflammation of the stomach. 

He left a wife and one child.

William Bucher died Monday (3 Oct 1887) of paralysis in Alto Pass, and was buried in Norton Cemetery.

John Thompson of Clinton County died 20 Sep 1887, after a fall from a runaway team.

Laura Dunsworth died 2 Oct 1887, in Dongola, aged 17 years.

Mrs.G.M. Brown, of Springville, died. She left a husband, two sons and one daughter.

Frankie Anderson, daughter of F.P. Anderson of Anna, died 5 Oct 1887, aged 2 years.

Hon. P.V.N. Davis died 5 Oct 1887, in Jerseyville, aged 65 years, and was buried in Anna Cemetery. He

was formerly of Anna and Rochester, N.Y. He never married. (See also 15 Oct 1887, issue.)

15 Oct 1887:

Drake H. Rendleman Sr., son of Martin Rendleman, died 12 Oct 1887, of malaria, at the residence of his

son, D.H. Rendleman Jr., north of Jonesboro, aged 85 years, 9 months, 24 days, and was buried in Casper Cemetery. He was born 18 Dec 1801, in Rowan Co., N.C., and married in spring of 1829 Catharine Hunsaker. His grandfather came from Germany and settled in Stokes Co., N.C., and was a Revolutionary Patriot. Drake Harris Sr. came to Union County in 1838 from Rowan Co., N.C. He had nine daughters and three sons, of whom five daughters and three sons were living.  (See also 22 Oct 1887, issue.)

Miss Marquet, of Pierron, Madison County, was found dead in the road 27 Sep 1887, from suicide.

Katie Shelby died 23 Sep 1887, at her residence in Shawneetown. She claimed to be 125 and had a

vivid recollection of the visit of LaFayette in 1825. She was the nurse of and helped raise Gen. John A. McClernand.

Wife and children of Abe Koen of Ava, Jackson County, were accidentally poisoned by dead rats in the cistern.

James Young died in the Joliet penitentiary of consumption a few days ago. He was the murderer of

H.P. Allen of Sandwich, DeKalb County.

Lizzie Hodges died 11 Oct 1887, at her residence in Cobden, aged 78 years, and was buried in ToledoCemetery.

22 Oct 1887:

John J. Deming died at the residence of his son-in-law, Riley Rice at San Ridge two weeks ago,

age about 70 years, and was buried in Rhoades Cemetery. He was born 29 Feb.

Albert Reitz drowned in Okaw River near Vandalia 27 Sep 1887.

Lovey Barringer died 18 Oct 1887, aged 20 years.

Daughter of J.N. and Alinta Hunter of Mill Creek died 15 Oct 1887, aged 1 year, 6 months,

and was buried in St. John's Cemetery.

Child of Frank White of Dongola was buried in Mt. Pisgah Cemetery Wednesday (19 Oct 1887)

Infant of James Davis died Monday (17 Oct 1887) from overdose of syrup for the croup, aged 3 months. Daughter of C.T. Smith of Alto Pass was buried last week in Anna Cemetery.

29 Oct 1887:

James Waters fell from a tree Tuesday gathering pecans and died. He lived in a houseboat on Green

farm six miles below Shawneetown. Two years ago his brother committed suicide by tying

his hands behind himself and jumping in the river.

Oliver Deeds was crushed to death in a coal mine in Shelbyville.

James Connelly, of Iuka, Marion County, was kicked by a horse a few days ago and died.

Charles Stoker was accidentally shot dead by E.J. Knecht at Springfield.

Child of Squire and Mrs. J.W. Coleman died Sunday (23 Oct 1887) in Anna.

Andrew Duckshied died 26 Oct 1887, in Cobden, aged 67 years.

Harvey Morris, formerly of Dongola, died 21 Oct 1887, in Lamar, Colo., aged 34 years.

5 Nov 1887:

Mrs. Quinche died in Galena, aged 83 years. She was born in Switzerland and was an original member of the Selkirk

       Settlement in Valley of Red River of the North. She left that region and settled in Fort Snelling in 1822.

William Forehope, of Knox County, was killed by a train in Altona.

Son of Alfred Gannon was drowned by his father, aged 3 years. Gannon escaped from jail in Vandalia. Daughter of Nicholas Guoy, of four miles south of Trenton, was dragged to death by his horse.

George D. Plumlee, youngest son of Denton Plumlee of DuQuoin, shot himself with a revolver Monday and died.

       He had buried his wife the week before.

Willie Ford, a deaf mute, was killed by David Skidmore in self defense at Creal Springs, Williamson

County some months ago.

Abraham F. Hunsaker died at his residence one and a half miles south of Cobden, aged about 80 years. Forest Green, stepson of Charles Morris, died Tuesday (1 Nov 1887), aged 5 years, and was buried in Cobden Cemetery.

12 Nov 1887:

Eliza Ury, wife of Jefferson L. Ury, daughter of I.B. Lovelace of Johnson County, died 5 Nov 1887,

at her residence in Jonesboro of consumption, aged 30 years, 8 months, 19 days, and was buried in St. John's Cemetery. She left one son and one daughter. (See also 26 Nov 1887, and 3 Dec 1887, issues.)

Alonzo Pitman was hit on the head by a brick while digging a well in Tuscola and died.

Lloyd Jones of Carbondale, Jackson County, was poisoned recently. His wife was arrested and John

Williams was arrested as an accessory.  All were "colored."

Davis W. Biggs died 7 Nov 1887, at the residence of his daughter, Mrs. J. Parmley, three miles north of Cobden,

      aged 82 years, and was buried in Limestone Cemetery beside his wife who died two years ago. He was born in

      North Carolina and came to Illinois in 1825 and lived near Cobden. He was the oldest Baptist minister in Illinois.

A.K. Brandon died 27 Oct 1887, of hard cancer of pylorus.

19 Nov 1887:

Elisha Piper of Dennison, Clark County, fell under a wagon and was run over and died.

Capt. Alf Cutting of Metropolis, Massac County, died.

Thomas McKenna, brother of the city marshal of Lamont, was found dead near LaSalle on Monday.

He was drunk and a cigar caught his clothes on fire and he burned to death.

William Goatey, of Springfield, died from a ruptured blood vessel while coughing.

Mrs. Malinda Kealy died 15 Nov 1887, at the residence of I.C. Piersol, aged about 75 years, and was

buried in Jonesboro Cemetery.

26 Nov 1887:

George Welch was crushed to death from a caving well at Minana.

James Galvin was killed by falling rock at Danville.

Oldest son of Thomas P. Casper died 22 Nov 1887, in Cobden, aged 16 years.

R.A. Farrell, wife of Dr. C.T. Farrell, died 17 Nov 1887, aged 61 years, 9 months.

Catherine Guthrie died 18 Nov 1887, at her residence in Cobden, aged 55 years.

Mamie E. Jessen, wife of C. Jessen, died 18 Nov 1887, of consumption, at the residence of her

      mother, aged 25 years, and was buried in Limestone Cemetery.

Mary Leming, wife of MosesLeming, died 19 Nov 1887, in Alto Pass of pneumonia, aged 59 years,

6 months, 10 days, and was buried in Cobden Cemetery.

Edward Davis, father of Mrs. Tom Oglesby and Walter Davis of Belknap, Johnson County, died 21 Nov

1887, aged 69 years, and was buried in St. John's Cemetery.

Mrs. James Dale died 18 Nov 1887, aged 77 years, and was buried in I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Dongola.

Daughter of James Lee of southeast of Anna was buried Monday (21 Nov 1887) in Anna Cemetery.

John Kamm died 19 Nov 1887, at his residence in Jonesboro, aged 63 years, 4 months, 25 days, and

was buried in Ebenezer Cemetery.

3 Dec 1887:

William Huddleston, trying to enter Widow Powell's home, was shot and killed Thursday by her

      son, Roy Powell at Harrisburg, Saline County.                                   .

Edward  Hammer of Fort Russell Township was accidentally run over by a wagon, aged 9 years.

10 Dec 1887:

John Wilkinson, brother of W.B. Wilkinson, died in St. Louis. He grew up in Cobden.

Claude Leyerle, son of Alice Leyerle, of south of Anna, died from the affects of a cold after wading

in a creek, aged 6 years.

17 Dec 1887:

Webb H. Weller was shot by Charley Hundley, when Hundley, a traveling salesman, came home and

found  Weller in bed with his wife.

Henry Beggs died 10 Dec 1887, aged 28 years, 10 months, 1 day.

Mrs. Burrell James died Thursday from burns at Saline Mines Precinct 10 miles from Shawneetown. Major Noah Johnson died in Mt. Vernon, Jefferson County, aged 88 years.

Arthur Fowler "colored" was murdered by Henry B. Thomas at Onarga, Iroquois County.

Henry Beers was sentenced to hang 13 Apr 1888, in Lincoln for murdering his sweetheart because

      she refused to marry him.

Rev. Gruber was run over by a train while trying to get out of the way of another train in Iroquois

County.

Miss Bertie Bates was killed by a train while crossing the tracks at Danville.

James Kean died 12 Dec 1887, at the residence of his brother-in-law, Charles B. Holcomb, of

      pneumonia, aged 30 years, and was buried in Cobden Cemetery.

7 Jan 1888:

Gilbert Elliot “Bertie” Carter, son of the Rev. and Mrs. Carter, aged nearly 10 months, died 26

Dec 1887, and was buried in Limestone Cemetery.

John A. Minor died 27 Dec 1887, aged 54 years, 17 days, and was buried in the cemetery of the Cobden

Presbyterian church.

Infant son of F.S. Earle died 24 Dec 1887, and was buried in Cobden Cemetery.

William A. Jones died 27 Dec 1887, in Cobden, aged 43 years, and was buried in Cobden Cemetery.  He

was a G.A.R. member.

Andrew Hogg died 18 Dec 1887, from injuries after he was thrown by his mule while racing

William Brading at Lick Creek, and was buried in Cedar Grove Cemetery.

George W.R. Corlis, brother of Will Corlis of Anna, died in Cairo, Alexander County, Thursday last

week (30 Dec 1887), aged 58 years, 8 months, 29 days, and was buried in Metropolis, Massac County.  (See also 14 Jan 1888, issue).

Henry Slack died 27 Dec 1887, in Anna, aged 73 years, 9 months, 21 days, and was buried in Anna Cemetery.

14 Jan 1888:

Mary Lockard Swafford, wife of James H. Swafford, died 29 Dec 1887, in Pomona Ridge of double

pneumonia, aged 40 years.  She left a husband and seven children, the youngest being 6.
