5 Jan 1884: Dr. J.A.C. Allen died 24 Dec 1883, in Grand Chain, Pulaski County, of spotted fever. John D. "Wint" Bridges died 29 Dec 1883, committed suicide at his home near Moscow. Sidney Grear died. James Ellis died two weeks ago two miles north of Anna.
12 Jan 1884: George Case, of Petone, died 25 Dec 1883, of accidental gun shot wound. Son of Muke Young, "colored," died in Grand Chain, Pulaski County, in a house fire, aged 5 years. Rebecca Ann Neely died 1 Jan 1884, in Henrietta, Texas. She was the wife of George W. Neely and the niece of C.G. Flaugh William Coleman, son of J.M. Coleman, died Thursday last week (3 Jan 1884) in a wagon accident in Anna. The funeral of Mrs. Kimball, sister of W.H. Willard, was in Elgin. Henry Roach died Monday morning (7 Jan 1884) in Wycliffe, Ky. He formerly lived two miles east of Cobden.
19 Jan 1884: Charles Meisenheimer was crushed by falling stone in the quarry and was buried in Dongola Odd Fellows Cemetery. B.F. Duncan was murdered at his sawmill in near Pulaski, Pulaski County.
26 Jan 1884 B.W. Mahon was knocked down and killed in a robbery in Cairo, Alexander County. DeWitt C. Tope died 17 Jan 1884, in Topeka, Kan., of epilepsy. He left a wife and one child.
2 Feb 1884 James H. Lawrence died 18 Jan 1884, in a suicide shooting near Diamond Cross, Randolph County. S.B. Brower died last Tuesday (29 Jan 1884) of dropsy. He was a Mexican War veteran and left a 2-year-old daughter.
9 Feb 1884 Allie Brown died 4 Feb 1884, at her home in Cobden, aged 17 months, the only child of Dr. & Wilson Brown, and was buried in Cobden Cemetery. Jane W. (Ramsey) Brummitt died 4 Feb 1884, in Vienna, Johnson County, of spinal disease, aged 58 years, 11 months. She married D.R. Brummitt on 12 Dec 1831, in Hickman Co., Tenn., came to Union County, in 1848 and moved to Johnson County, in 1868. She had 10 children, seven sons and three daughter, all deceased. Sarah H. Wilson, the wife of Chauncy F. Wilson, died 2 Feb 1884, of pneumonia at the residence of her son-in-law, Washington Brown, three miles southwest of Jonesboro, aged about 45 years, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery. She came to Union County, a few weeks ago from her home in Dakota Territory. Son of Henry Dillow died last Saturday (2 Feb 1884) of catarrhal fever, and was buried at St. John's. Baby boy of Workmans died 1 Feb 1884, in Dongola.
16 Feb 1884 Laura (Ford) Farr died 6 Feb 1884, at Belknap, Johnson County, and was buried in Union School House Cemetery in Dongola. Thomas Hooper was killed at Cobden two weeks ago uncoupling railroad cars.
23 Feb 1884 Mrs. Hattie Jones, wife of W.D. Jones, died 19 Feb 1884, at Cobden, and was buried in Carbondale, Jackson County.
1 Mar 1884 George Sams died 13 Feb 1884, in Mill Creek. Robert Edward Lee, son of Edward and Malinda Lee, died 24 Feb 1884, in Mill Creek, aged 3 weeks Minnie Black, daughter of William A. Black, died 24 Feb 1884, in Mill Creek, aged 7 months, 3 weeks. David Culp died 25 Feb 1884, of pneumonia in Rich Precinct six miles east of Makanda, aged 51 years, and was buried in Water Valley Cemetery. He was born in Logan Co., Ohio, and moved with his parents to Illinois. He married Martha Johnson, who died in the fall of 1877. He married Ellen E. Keller in 1878. (See also 8 Mar 1884 issue). Martha J. Rendleman, wife of Drake H. Rendleman Jr., died 25 Feb 1884, of sciatica or softening of the brain, half a mile north of Jonesboro. She was the daughter of Moses A. and Clarissa Goodman, born 10 Feb 1848, in Rowan Co., N.C., and came to Union County, in 1849. She left seven daughters and one son, ages 2 to 17. She was buried in St. John's Cemetery. (See also 8 Mar 1884, issue). The funeral of Dr. E. Day, formerly of Anna, was in Grand Tower, Jackson County. Mrs. Dent, wife of Ned Dent ("colored"), died last Sunday (24 Feb 1884). Phillip Lester Elmore, son of J.W. & Mary C. Elmore, died 29 Jan 1884, aged 8 years, 7 months, 14 days.
8 Mar 1884 Mrs. Cynthia (or Syntha) Harrison died 27 Feb 1884, aged 29 years, 11 months, 2 days. She was the daughter of John and Jane Overbay, and married William Harrison in Oct 1876. She left three children. Mrs. Nathaniel Pickering died 2 Mar 1884, of heart disease one and a half miles northwest of Cobden, and was buried in Cobden Cemetery. Louisa Rethe, wife of B.N. Rethe, died 3 Mar 1884, in Cobden, aged 50 years, 10 months, 1 day, and was buried in Cobden. Grandma Milliken died two weeks ago, three miles west of Alto Pass, aged 88 years, and was buried in Norton Graveyard Dona M. Frick, wife of W.D. Frick, died 3 Mar 1884, in Jonesboro of typhoid pneumonia, aged 34 years, 5 months, 4 days, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery.
15 Mar 1884: Elderly female patient at Illinois Southern Hospital for the Insane, from northern part of state, was scalded last Sunday (9 Mar 1884) and died.
22 Mar 1884: Mrs. J.B. Richart died of consumption in Florida. Mrs. Hightower died of consumption in Florida. William Hightower died of consumption in Florida. O.P. Hightower died of consumption in Florida. Mrs. Clara Laney died of consumption in Florida. Infant son of J.H. Kuegler of Dongola died 15 Mar 1884. J.D. Walter died 17 Mar 1884, in Anna of consumption, aged 45 years, and was buried in Anna Cemetery. He left children. Mrs. Walter died some months since.
29 Mar 1884: Mrs. Elizabeth Holme, wife of John P. Holme, died 22 Mar 1884, in Dongola Precinct of pneumonia.
12 Apr 1884 Logan Sullivan was killed by Arthur Stephens. George W. Mertz of Mound City, Pulaski County, died recently. John Kramer of St. Clair County, committed suicide by hanging last week. Hardy Foster of Washington County, committed suicide by shooting Sunday before last (30 Mar 1884). Fred Oliver died of typhoid pneumonia Friday (11 Apr 1884). (See also 26 Apr 1884, issue). Isophene (House) Dishon died 6 Apr 1884, in Jonesboro of typho pneumonia, aged 75 years. She married in Nashville, Tenn., Henry Dishon, who died in 1861. In 1836-37, she came to Jonesboro. She had 10 children, five of whom were living, Calvin B. Dishon, Nancy B. (widow Of the late Dr. Hacker), Mrs. S.A. Smith of Chicago, Bethune Dishon, and P.A. Dishon.
19 Apr 1884 George W. Ferrill died 13 Apr 1884, two miles north of Cobden, aged 63 years, and was buried in family burying ground on or near his farm. Mrs. Joseph Hess, aged 89 years, of Anna Precinct, daughter of George Hartline, was buried last Tuesday (15 Apr 1884). (See also 26 Apr 1884 and 24 Oct 1885, issues). James Conroy was killed in an explosion in a coal mine in Alma Monday last week (31 Mar 1884)
10 May 1884: George Ross was killed 1 May 1884, in Cairo, Alexander County, from a fall from two freight cars, aged 14 years. Daughter of Nicholas Reisenberger of Belleville, aged 5 years, choked to death at the dinner table Sunday before last (27 Apr 1884) Mrs. Rebecca Kimmel, of Elkville, cousin of Gen. Zachary Taylor and relative of Jeff Davis, died 21 Apr 1884, aged 83 years. Ex-sheriff Water was killed at Golconda, Pope County, last week by a shot through a window. Mrs. Bettie (Elliott) Fann, wife of CharlesFann, died Monday evening last week (28 Apr 1884) in Cairo, Alexander County. She left one daughter. Mrs. Elizabeth (Brown) Brown, widow of Isaac Brown, died at the residence of her son, Nathan Brown, on Willard's Ferry Road, six miles west of Jonesboro, of typhoid malarial fever, aged 66 years, 6 months, 7 days, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery. She was a distant relative of her husband and married at aged 18. She had 11 children, of whom two sons and three daughters were living. She also left nine grandchildren. Arthur E. Finch, son of Dr. G.W. Finch of Adrian, Mich., died 6 May 1884, at the residence of E.H. Finch in Anna, aged 21 years, 3 months, and was buried in Adrian Cemetery. Eli Skimlan died 5 May 1884, at home two miles west of Cobden, and was buried in Cobden Cemetery. Lillie Belle Abernathie, second daughter of Robert Abernathie deceased, died 3 May 1884, at the residence of her mother, Mrs. S.J. Whitehead, of congestion of the bowels, aged 17 years, 7 M, 10 days, and was buried in Lamer Graveyard in Alto Pass.
17 May 1884: Mrs. Sanford Noe was murdered by her husband 20 Oct 1881, near Old Ripley, Bond County. Charles Lambelet was caught in cogs of tile machine 16 Apr 1884, and died a few days ago.
Albert Mischka was killed in stump puller accident three miles northeast of Ashley. George W. Weaver died 11 May 1884, at his residence south of Jonesboro, aged 44 years, 7 months, 28 days, and was buried in St. John's Cemetery. He was born in Union County, the son of John and Sarah Weaver, natives of Rowan Co., N.C., who came to Illinois in 1821. He married on 14 Aug 1862, Mary A. Otrich. He had 11 children, of whom two sons and three daughters were living. Henry W. and Catharine C. Otrich, natives of Rowan Co., N.C., also came to Illinois in 1821.
24 May 1884 C.M. Lyerle died in Jonesboro Wednesday night (21 May 1884). He left several children.
31 May 1884 John M. Trumbo was shot and murdered in Massac County while lying down in a wagon.
7 Jun 1884 Son of Billy Hanckley of Makanda died Friday (6 Jun 1884) from injuries sustained when he fell on a board and a nail entered his forehead.
14 Jun 1884 T.J. Brown died last Monday (9 Jun 1884) of abscess of the brain, aged about 33 years. He left a widow and one small child. Daughter of M. Hehenberger died last Sunday (8 Jun 1884) of stoppage of the bowels, aged about 10 years, and was buried in the German cemetery. Mrs. Anna Naill died 9 Jun 1884, aged 73 years, and was buried in Casper Cemetery. She was born in Bath, N.Y. By her first husband, Charles Rixleben, who died in 1840, she had two children, B. Rixleben and Mrs. N.G. Miller (formerly Mrs. Dr. Brooks), both of Jonesboro. She married John E. Naill and left one living daughter from this marriage, Mrs. John H. Spann.
5 Jul 1884 Mrs. F.M. McCallen died Tuesday morning (1 Jul 1884) in Dongola.
12 Jul 1884 Octavia Dillow, wife of W.W. Dillow of Springville, died 4 Jul 1884. She left three children, one an infant. John Littleton died 7 Jul 1884, of inflammatory rheumatism in Mill Creek, aged about 30 years.
19 Jul 1884 Wife of Hon. R.A.D. Wilbanks died last Sunday (13 Jul 1884) in Mt. Vernon, Jefferson County, of consumption. She was a daughter of Judge Tanner and sister of Mrs. M.C. Crawford of Jonesboro. Infant son of Edward Hofmann died Friday last week (11 Jul 1884). Capt. L.P. Wilcox died 12 Jul 1884, at his residence in Anna, aged about 67 years, and was buried in Jonesboro. He left a widow and two small children. He was born in old Fort Massac, but resided in Union County, since 1823. His father died and was buried in Jonesboro about 1820. He was a brother of Mrs. Kally of Anna and half brother of Mrs. T. Hileman of Jonesboro. Mrs. J.L. Robinson died 12 Jul 1884, in Anna, aged 33 years, 3 months, 2 days, and was buried in Jonesboro. Dr. I.C. Jacques died 14 Jul 1884, at his residence in Cobden, aged 57 years, 23 days, and was buried in Cobden Cemetery. He was born in New York and located in Cobden in 1864.
2 Aug 1884 Freddy Wiley, infant son of W.W. Wiley, died 26 Jul 1884, of summer complaint, aged 2 months, 17 days, and was buried in Anna Cemetery. George Franklin Keller, youngest son of A. Keller, died 25 Jul 1884, aged 8 years. Mary Alice Goodman, died 28 Jul 1884, aged 25 years, 11 months, 1 days, and was buried in St. John’s Cemetery. She was the daughter of Moses A. and C.C. Goodman and a sister of Mrs. D.H. Rendleman. (See also the 9 Aug 1884, issue).
9 Aug 1884 Lucy Wiley, infant daughter of W.W. Wiley, died 6 Aug 1884, aged 2 months, 28 days, and was buried in Anna Cemetery.
16 Aug 1884 Judge S. Marchildon died last Thursday (7 Aug 1884) at Thebes, Alexander County, aged about 67 years. He left a son, William Marchildon, and two daughter, Mrs. Rowling of Thebes and Mrs. Cully of East Cape Girardeau. His wife, nee Massy, also survives. Willis Green, next to youngest son of David Green deceased, died 8 Aug 1884, in Cobden of typhoid fever, aged 30 years, 6 months, 7 days. He left a wife and two small children.
23 Aug 1884 Daniel Gage was shot and killed by Mr. Avery last Monday two miles southeast of Vienna, Johnson County. Grant Minton died 17 Aug 1884, two miles west of Alto Pass, of typhoid fever, aged 20 years, 3 months, and was buried in Collins Cemetery. Hannibal Martin of Anna Precinct died 13 Aug 1884, aged 25 years.
6 Sep 1884 and was buried in Cobden Cemetery.
13 Sep 1884 Rev. I.N. Albright died near Dongola, aged 74 years. He moved to Johnson County in 1846. He had six children; five of whom were living. His second son was Hon. F.E. Albright.
20 Sep 1884 Willis J. Hunsaker was killed by kick from a horse Monday (15 Sep 1884) at the residence of his stepfather, John H. Hileman. Mrs. Eli Peeler of Dongola died 10 Sep 1884. She left a husband and three small children. Jesse W. Elmore died 14 Sep 1884, aged 61 years, 8 days, and was buried in Stone Fort Cemetery. His father-in-law was Dr. F.M. Agnew. 27 Sep 1884 Mrs. Fountain, formerly Mrs. Jones of Jonesboro, eldest daughter of Gov. Dougherty, died at her home in DuQuoin last Monday (22 Sep 1884) of neuralgia affection of the heart, aged about 52 years. She was born in Jonesboro. (See also the 4 Oct 1884 edition).
4 Oct 1884 Frankie Hartman, son of Mrs. Annie Hartman, of Mill Creek, died 27 Sep 1884, aged about 4 years. Infant of Charles Clapp of Mill Creek, died 28 Sep 1884, aged about 5 months. Maggie McNew died in Pinckneyville, Perry County, last Friday (26 Sep 1884). John Corgan died at the home of H.W. Keller in De Lassus, Mo., 25 Sep 1884, aged 74 years. He moved to Missouri in 1872. Edgar Allen Allen, youngest son of Dr. J.A.C. Allen, died 19 Sep 1884, at Grand Chain, Pulaski County. Mother of Mrs. Dr. J.A.C. Allen died 26 Dec 1883.
11 Oct 1884 Child of Wylie Mann died last week in Makanda of diphtheria, aged 2 years. Daughter of William Junger died last week in Makanda of convulsions. Mrs. H.F. Warren died 4 Oct 1884, in Anna, aged 36 years, and was buried in Anna Cemetery.
18 Oct 1884 Christian Everett Lingle, infant son of Moses and Emily J. Lingle, died three miles southwest of Jonesboro, 9 Oct 1884 of diphtheria, aged 3 years, 3 days. Infant of W.W. Dillow died 13 Oct 1884, in Springville, and was buried in St. John's Cemetery.
8 Nov 1884 Frederick Fried died 4 Nov 1884, in Cobden of typhoid fever, and was buried in Cobden Cemetery. He left a wife and four children.
15 Nov 1884 Thomas Allen died last Wednesday (12 Nov 1884) when crushed by rolling logs at the McCallen sawmill in Dongola I.B.N. Aldridge died 9 Nov 1884, two miles north of Cobden, aged 60 years, and was buried in Toledo Cemetery. He was born in Alabama and came to Union County 22 years ago. He had 15 children, of whom 10 were living. Dr. John Lawrence, father of Dr. T. Lawrence, died 8 Oct 1884, in Osceola, Iowa, aged 82 years, 6 months, 5 days. George A. Cruse died 11 Nov 1884, aged 47 years. He was born in Union County. The Rev. Mr. McLain died last Saturday (8 Nov 1884) and was buried in Anna Cemetery.
22 Nov 1884 Willis Lamer, only son of Rev. John D. Lamer, died Tuesday (18 Nov 1884) of congestion of the stomach, aged about 30 years, and was buried in Mt. Tabor Cemetery. He left a wife and children.
29 Nov 1884 Old Father Morrow, pioneer preacher, died last week. Robert Kirkwood, well known in Randolph County, died last week. Mrs. Fred Beisswingert, daughter-in-law, of Mrs. Ed. Beisswingert, died lately. She left a husband and four children.
6 Dec 1884 Rebecca C. Cozby, wife of James O. Cozby, died in Jonesboro at the residence of her son, Warren Cozby, 27 Nov 1884, aged 62 years, 11 months, 13 days. She was married 43 years and had seven children; three sons and one daughter were living. Lydia Hargrave, wife of Allen Hargrave, died 27 Nov 1884, aged 36 years, and was buried in McClure Graveyard. Mrs. V.M. Foley died Daughter of Mr. Ferrill died 29 Nov 1884, aged about 21 years.
13 Dec 1884 Mother of Hon. Louis Houck died at her residence in Elmwood, Mo., Tuesday, aged 81 years, and was buried in Belleville. Andrew Dougherty, son of John Dougherty of Mound City, Pulaski County, was killed in a railroad accident Tuesday morning (9 Dec 1884), and was buried in Mound City.
20 Dec 1884 William Lilley, son of William Lilley, died last Sunday (14 Dec 1884) of spinal meningitis, aged about 18 years.
27 Dec 1884 Willis J. Willard, third son of Willis Willard, accidentally shot and killed himself Tuesday (23 Dec 1884) at his residence in Jonesboro, aged 34 years, 4 months, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery. He left a wife and two small children.
3 Jan 1885 Fred Jeemert of Red Bud, died 22 Dec 1884, aged about 57 years. He left a wife and three children.
10 Jan 1885 Eva Hillboldt, daughter of J. Henry and E.V. Hillboldt, died 27 Dec 1884, of laryngitis, aged 8 years, 11 months, 22 days. John Hull died 21 Dec 1884, in White Pigeon, Mich. He left a widow. Charles Johns died 2 Jan 1885, in Cobden, aged 32 years, 9 months, 15 days, and was buried in Cobden Cemetery.
17 Jan 1885 James Donnelly of Venica, Madison County, was run over by a train a few Sundays ago. Infant son of David Kimmel died several days ago. Dr. John W. Henley, former surgeon of the 109th, died at Marianna, Ark., about 1 Nov 1884. Georgie H. Cover, son of J.R. Cover, died 9 Jan 1885, aged 3 years, 4 months, 19 days.
24 Jan 1885 Joseph Mayer died four miles south of Jonesboro last Saturday (17 Jan 1885), aged 74 years, and was buried in Miller-Mayer Cemetery. He was born in Austria and lived in Union County 24 years. John Hill died 18 Jan 1885, of pneumonia, and was buried in Rich Cemetery. Major Ward, of Carbondale, Jackson County, died.
31 Jan 1885 Daughter of Mr. Brockmeyer was burned to death near Perryville Friday (23 Jan 1885?), aged 5 years. Samuel Mansker died near Rockwood last Thursday (22 Jan 1885?), aged 98 years. He was born in 1795 in Kentucky and settled in Rockwood in 1807. Mrs. A. Sitter and daughter died of pneumonia in Cobden, and were buried in Rich Cemetery. (See also 7 Feb 1885, issue). Narcissa A. Spann, wife of William A. Spann, died 23 Jan 1885, in Vienna, Johnson County, aged 41 years, 4 months, 8 days, and was buried in the Odd Fellows Cemetery. She was formerly of Jonesboro, but had lived in Vienna nine years. She left two sons and four daughters. John Crews was stabbed by his brother, Dan "Doc" Crews, in Ashley. Wife of Judge C. Hoffner of Wetaug, Pulaski County, died last week.
7 Feb 1885 Thomas H. Bean died 3 Feb 1885, in East Cape Girardeau, Alexander County, aged 54 years, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery. Lafayette Milton was hanged 30 Jan 1885, in Corning, Ark. _____ Suggs was found dead in December 1880 or January 1881 near Dongola, allegedly killed by Lafayette Milton. John Hale was killed 18 Jun 1880, in Clay Co., Ark., by Lafayette Milton. John Otrich, nephew of Dr. Otrich, died in St. Louis, Mo., of pneumonia last Wednesday evening (4 Feb 1885). Mrs. Elizabeth Love died 3 Feb 1885, in Anna, aged 64 years, 11 months, 5 days. George Morgan, son of Robert and Elizabeth Morgan, of Makanda, died of pneumonia.
14 Feb 1885 Herman Bunkerbeck of Saline, Madison County, froze to death some days ago while intoxicated. Abraham Hagler committed suicide near Nashville on Monday last week (2 Feb 1885?) by taking rat poison. Frank May of Hawthorne was run over by a train at Carmi, White County, Saturday night (7 Feb 1885?).
21 Feb 1885 Ignatz Wonderle, of Alton, Madison County, died Monday (16 Feb 1885?) of congestion of the lungs. Mrs. J.W. Wray, of Vandalia, died Sunday (15 Feb 1885?) from a overdose of diamond dye. She left a husband and several children. Jacob Poole, of Mill Creek, died 18 Feb 1885, of dropsy, aged 25 years. Charles Knupp, father of Eli Knupp, an old citizen of Pulaski County, died the first of this week. (See also the 7 Mar 1885, issue.)
28 Feb 1885 Benjamin Crockett, of Bond County, cousin of Davy Crockett, died 4 Feb 1885, at the home of his son near Betterton, aged 79 years. Martha Alice Avett, wife of William P. Avett and daughter of Milton Brown, died 31 Jan 1885, six miles south of Jonesboro, aged 35 years, and was buried in St. John's Cemetery. David Craver died 24 Feb 1885, of pneumonia, at the home of his brother, James Craver, in Jonesboro, aged 64 years, 5 months, 15 days. He was born in Davidson Co., N.C., in 1824, and came to Jonesboro in 1828 with his parents, Michael and Susanna Craver. His sons, J.C. Craver and J. Craver, resided in Hillsboro Co., Fla. Richard "Uncle Dick" Henley died 21 Feb 1885, of consumption, aged about 40 years, and was buried in Anna Cemetery.
7 Mar 1885 George F. Hunsaker, only child of S.B. and Jane Hunsaker, and nephew of Benjamin M. Hunsaker, died 26 Feb 1885, in Zanesville, Logan Co., Ohio, aged 25 years, 8 months, 4 days, and was buried in I.O.O.F. cemetery. He was born in Union County, and went to Ohio with parents in 1862. He left a widow. Elizabeth J. (Bennett) Kimmel, widow of Deacon George W. Kimmel, died three miles south of Jonesboro, aged 61 years, 3 months, 18 days. She was born in Cape Girardeau Co., Mo., and raised near Grand Tower, Jackson County. She was the sister of Mrs. David Green of Cobden and Mrs. George W. Cox. She had several children, the youngest being Columbus Kimmel. Another son, Joseph Kimmel, lived in Texas.
14 Mar 1885 Mollie Kimmel, daughter of John Kimmel, died 28 Feb 1885, of consumption, aged 23 years, and was buried in Anna Cemetery. Mrs. B.W. Menees, died 7 Mar 1885, of consumption, aged 37 years. Dr. E.C. McKinney died 11 Mar 1885, at the residence of his daughter, S.E. McKinney, in Anna, aged 74 years, 2 months, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery. Byron Treece, son of William Treece, died 9 Mar 1885, in Anna, aged 5 years.

Nancy (Batson) Vancil died 6 Feb 1885, at the home of her son, Francis M. Batson, aged over 70 years. She was born near Jonesboro, Illinois Territory, four years before Illinois became a state.
28 Mar 1885 J.C. Swinford died Monday last week (16 Mar 1885?) in Percy, Randolph County, aged 86 years. He was formerly from Williamson County.
11 Apr 1885 Son of Otto Grabow was burned to death near Kaolin, aged 3 years. Beauregard Parrish was killed by a falling tree in the woods last Saturday (4 Apr 1885), aged 22 years. Caleb Dillow, one of the oldest settlers of the county, died last week. Jimmy Henry died 7 Apr 1885, and was buried in Anna Cemetery. He was born in England. (See also the 4 Apr 1885, issue.)
18 Apr 1885 Eldest son of George Elliott died two weeks ago, four miles north of Makanda, aged 7 years. A window sill fell on him. David Avery was killed at the Vienna depot, Johnson County, last Wednesday (15 Apr 1885).
25 Apr 1885 Minnie Stephens, daughter of William Stephens, died 18 Apr 1885, in Dongola.
2 May 1885 Mrs. Anton Suppiger died a few days ago in Highland. Squire E. Wright died 28 Apr 1885, in Richview, aged 78 years. Mr. Bailey, a school teacher, was killed by his student, Emmet McBride.
16 May 1885: Boswell Cyrus Crocker died 7 May 1885, in St. Louis, Mo., aged 2 years, 4 months, and was buried in Cobden Cemetery. Deacon John Evans died 7 May 1885, in Jonesboro of congestion of the stomach, aged 76 years. He was born in 1809 in England, and married Mary A. Evans. In 1835 he came to America, lived in New York 10 years, and in the fall of 1844 he came to Jonesboro. He was a bootmaker and started the Jonesboro Gazette in 1849. He married 2nd in 1866 Mrs. L.H. Ferguson. He had five sons and five daughters, three of whom survived him, Mrs. Edson of Kansas, Mrs. J.H. Hillboldt of Jonesboro, and Henry H. Evans of St. Louis.
23 May 1885 Phoebe Buchannon, widow of Coleman Clayton, died 31 Mar 1885, in Alma, aged 86 years. She was a 2nd cousin of Pres. Buchanon and a widow pensioner of the War of 1812. Mrs. Joseph Lloyd, wife of a blind wood sawyer, died 21 May 1885, in Anna.
30 May 1885 Israel Deeder died 18 Apr 1885, near Nilewood, aged 12 years. Robert Keltner of Jonesboro Precinct, died last month in Tennessee of consumption. Alex Welker was shot through the heart by Frank Mayes of Goreville Township, Johnson County at a country dance at Mr. Crowell's one mile east of Cobden Saturday night (23 May 1885). He was released from the Chester penitentiary, when his sentence was reduced to 20 years. “He is said to have been one of the best and most trusty convicts ever in the pen” (10 Jul 1897, issue).
13 Jun 1885 Dr. Henry Magee died 4 Jun 1885, in Alto Pass, aged 60 years, 11 months, 8 days, and was buried in Collins Cemetery. He was born in West Haven, England, and came to Union County in 1865. He left a widow.
20 Jun 1885 Joseph L. Kurkey, of Jonesboro, died 14 Jun 1885, of cerebro spinal meningitis, aged 47 years. He was formerly of Bridgeport, Lawrence County, and of Elco, Alexander County. He left a widow and six children.
27 Jun 1885 Samuel Carter died of intermittent fever Monday (22 Jun 1885), aged 20 years, and was buried in Cobden Cemetery.
4 Jul 1885 Martin Hannigan, aged 18, and Daniel Irving, aged 17, drowned in Bompas River at Olney a few days ago. Child of Capt. John Hacker of Cairo, Alexander County, died last week.
11 Jul 1885 M.D.L. Broadway died at the residence of his son, J.B.B. Broadway, 7 Jul 1885, aged 57 years, 5 months, 27 days, and was buried in Cobden Cemetery. He was born in Georgia, and moved to Cobden from Tennessee in 1862. He left one son and four daughters.
18 Jul 1885 William Modglin died at his residence on the Jarvis place in Cobden Thursday (16 Jul 1885). William Vancil, son of the late Levi Vancil, died in Cobden Wednesday (15 Jul 1885) of consumption. He had been in Colorado for four months. Mia Hale died 8 Jul 1885, in Mill Creek, aged about 15 years. She left a father, mother, brothers and sisters. Aunt Susie Grammer, sister of Judge Eaves, died 11 Jul 1885, aged 64 years, and was buried at the Brewer Place. Winstead Davie died Saturday (11 Jul 1885) in Jonesboro, aged 88 years, 6 months, 8 days. He was born in Pearson Co., N.C., and moved to Stewart Co., Tenn., with his father. He married Annie Willard. His children were Mrs. Col. B.L. Wiley of Makanda, Mrs. J.K. Walton, Mrs. Col. T.M. Perrine, D.S. Davie, and Mrs. D.W. Brown of Anna. Mary Ann Reed died 10 Jul 1885, one and a half miles south of Jonesboro, aged 69 years, 4 months, 9 days, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery. She was born in Ohio. Her grandparents came from England and settled in Ohio to establish a Quaker community. She married Attmar "Lord" Reed in 1859 and settled in Cape Girardeau Co., Mo., and moved to Union County, in 1862. Mrs. Elizabeth Jones died 14 Jul 1885, in Anna, aged 69 years, 16 days.

Fred Hartman, engineer, was killed last Friday (31 Jul 1885) in Cairo, Alexander County, when his train engine overturned. William Cahill, of Alto Pass, died 20 Jul 1885, when he fell stepping from a moving train. Aaron R. Barringer died 2 Aug 1885, in Dongola, and was buried in Mt. Pisgah Cemetery, Pulaski County. He left a wife and five children.
15 Aug 1885 Son of Mr. Gold, superintendent of the poor in Saline County, was killed a few days ago by accidental discharge of a gun, aged about 10 years. Claude Griffin Avett, grandson of C.G. Flaugh of Jonesboro, died at the residence of his father, William Avett, in Mil; Creek Precinct, 8 Aug 1885, aged about 10 years. Delia Gregory, daughter of John and Sarah Gregory, died 8 Aug 1885, in Alto Pass, aged about 4 years. William "Uncle Billy" Bean, uncle of Josiah Bean of Anna, died 9 Aug 1885, at his residence near Alto Pass, aged 87 years, and was buried in the family burying ground on Holloway Farm. He left a wife and several children.
22 Aug 1885 Frank Sheppard, formerly of Cobden, who was reported killed and scalped "Out West," was seen walking the streets. Child of George Rich died Monday (17 Aug 1885). Ella Hunsaker, wife of S.H. Hunsaker, oldest daughter of Mortimore Hunsaker, niece of Mrs. H. Spring of Cobden, died 13 Aug 1885, in Buncomb Precinct, Johnson County, of consumption, and was buried in Odd Fellows Cemetery in Vienna, Johnson County. She left a father, mother, husband, and two children. Jacob Pfitzer died 18 Aug 1885, in Meisenheimer Precinct, aged about 87 years. He was from Wurtemburg, Germany and among the first German settlers in the county nearly 50 years ago. Ada Elizabeth Robinson, daughter of L.F. and C.T. Robinson, died 16 Aug 1885, of congestion of the brain, aged 3 years, 1 month, 1 day.
29 Aug 1885 Maurice Y. McCarthy, of Alton, Madison County, was killed instantly 8 Aug 1885. He left a wife and two children. J.A. Splain of Bloomington, fell from a train in Springfield on Friday, aged 24 years. Mrs. Thomas Hartegan was killed by her husband last Friday in Aurora. He then committed suicide. Mrs. R.I. Smith died during an abortion in Moweaqua. Booker Pickerell fell from a train at Lincoln Friday, aged 35 years. He was an escapee from the asylum. Noah Friesner and John Seifert died 15 Aug 1885, crossing Noble's Creek near Todd's Point, Shelby County. Mrs. E.V. Lapham and her unborn child, of Morrison, Whiteside County, died 11 Aug 1885. T.H. Perrin, of Alton, Madison County, died in Taylorsville.
5 Sep 1885 Jacob Schwartz died at his residence four miles west of Makanda on 31 Aug 1885, aged over 81 years. He came from Pennsylvania with his mother in 1817. Olive Ussery, youngest daughter of Charles Crowell, died 1 Sep 1885, of consumption, at the residence of N. Meisenheimer in Anna, aged 21 years. Lizzie Webb, daughter of M.M. Inman of Anna, died 30 Aug 1885, in Denver, Colo.
12 Sep 1885 Joe Renter drowned 16 Aug 1885, near Mt. Olive, aged 10 years. Griffith Wright died 14 Aug 1885, in Fayette County. Agnes A. Whalen, daughter of Edward and Mary Whalen, died 5 Sep 1885, in Anna of inflammation of the bowels, aged 4 years, 3 months, 23 days.
19 Sep 1885 Charles P. Janney, relative of Gov. John Dougherty of Jonesboro, died 30 Aug 1885, in Columbia, S.C., aged about 37 years.

Joseph Busse, uncle of Bernard Busse, was murdered in a saloon in Makanda by William Boren and William Spence Jr. Boren was captured in Portia, Lawrence Co., Ark., by C.W. Kerr in November 1887. 17 Oct 1885 Claib Conder was killed in a knife fight with Mr. Steele in Jackson County. He was a widower and left no children. Mrs. Riebes, sister of Mrs. Dr. C.T. Ferrill of Cobden, died 11 Oct 1885. James W. Fenton died 8 Oct 1885, three miles west of Cobden, aged 71 years, 2 months, 10 days, and was buried in Cobden Cemetery. He was born in Springfield, Ohio.
24 Oct 1885 Joe Hess died at the residence of his son, John Hess, in Anna Precinct, aged 86 years, 11 months. He married the daughter of George Hartline, who died a few months since.
31 Oct 1885 Thomas W. Gunn died at his residence in section 15, two miles north of Cobden, aged 60 years.
7 Nov 1885 Daughter of Samuel Miller was burned to death two miles east of Cobden, aged 3 years. Samuel had two other children, the oldest being age 12 years. George Maxey, uncle of W.S. Day and N.B. Maxey of Jonesboro, died 26 Oct 1885, at his residence in Neosho, Mo.,\
aged over 50 years. 14 Nov 1885 Priscilla B. Agnew, wife of Dr. A.B. Agnew, died week before last in Samoth, Massac County. She also left a 10-year- old daughter. Mrs. John W. Dry died October 1885 in Kansas. Her children, Willie Dry and Daisy Dry, were sick with typhoid fever and not expected to live. The name is also listed as Day and as Dyer. The children lived and John W. took them and returned in North Carolina in spring of 1886. (See also 13 Mar 1886, issue) In 1887 he returned to Kansas with his children (19 Mar 1887, issue).
21 Nov 1885 Ellen B. Ashley, widow of Col. L.W. Ashley, died 22 Oct 1885, near San Antonio, Texas. Parish Keith, of Missouri, eldest son of the late George and Harriet Keith, was buried in Collins Cemetery. David McNair died a few days ago. He left an aged wife. Martin Gentry of Williamson County, died in Creal Springs and was buried in a family graveyard.
28 Nov 1885 Mr. Wall was killed by a falling tree Friday night (20 Nov 1885) hunting near Camp Ground, aged 17 years. Ed Bessiwinger died. Calvin Sams, son of Mrs. T.W. Littleton of Anna, died 23 Nov 1885.
5 Dec 1885 in 1840 Maria Milner, who died 13 Jul 1869. He was raised a Quaker, went to California with "gold fever" and in
the
spring of 1852 he arrived at Willard's Landing. He had three sons and one
daughter in the vicinity and one son in Hiram Norton died 27 Nov 1885, of typhoid pneumonia at his residence one mile north of Alto Pass, and was buried in Collins Cemetery. He left a wife and a large family of children.

19 Dec 1885: John C. Emerson died 13 Dec 1885, at his residence seven miles east of Anna of pneumonia, aged about 55 years. He came to Union County from North Carolina, where he was born, in 1858. He was in the Civil War.
