Theresa Fowley, wife of James Fowley, aged 19 years, died 31 Dec 1881.

William Lydick died at the residence of S.W. Beckwith of overdose of morphine 2 Jan 1882.

Mr. Brower died at the residence of H. Casper of Cobden 28 Dec. 1881.  Reported as not dead, but "much better"

      14 Jan 1882.

Daniel Gurley, son of Anson "Bone" Gurley, aged 18 years, accidentally shot himself while hunting

Tuesday (27 Dec 1882), and was buried in Rhodes Cemetery.

 

14 Jan 1882:

Stella Lamer, only daughter of Mrs. Alice A. Lamer, aged 12 years, died at Alto Pass 5 Jan 1882, and

was buried in Collins Cemetery.

Joseph Kertin Tucker died at Nashville, Ill., 26 Jul 1881.

 

28 Jan 1882:

Mr. M.L. Roe, passenger conductor on Cairo & St. Louis Railroad, died of typhoid pneumonia at Sparta 17 Jan 1882.

Capt. James B. Fulton, of Anna, brother-in-law of Alex Frazier and J.W. Morris, born 1825 at Beaver

Dam, near Pittsburg, Pa., died at Illinois Southern Hospital for the Insane in Anna after he fell from the fourth floor in a dumb waiter he was trying to repair 24 Jan 1882, and was buried in Mounds Beech Grove Cemetery, Pulaski County.  (See also 4 Feb 1882, and 11 Mar 1882, issues.)   

Martha Cox, daughter of George and Elizabeth Bean, sister of Josiah Bean, and mother of William H.

Cox and James Cox, died at her residence west of Jonesboro 21 Jan 1882.  She came to Illinois when 4 years old.

 

4 Feb 1882:

Jacob McEwen, of Bird's farm below Belmont, drowned in back water last Friday (27 Jan 1882).

James Dean, of Ava, died at Murphysboro, Jackson County, of heart disease Tuesday (24 Jan 1882).

Elizbabeth Smith, wife of James Smith, of three miles north of Alto Pass in Jackson County, aged about

55 years, died 25 Jan 1882.

J. Allen Agnew, oldest son of Dr. F.M. and Hattie E. Agnew, aged 15 years, died of spinal meningitis at

his residence east of Makanda in Jackson County, 31 Jan 1882.  (See also 11 Feb 1882, issue.)

 

11 Feb 1882:

Mrs. William H. Green, of Cairo, Alexander County, died at Quitman, Ga., 3 Feb 1882.

Harry O. Hamilton, son of Robert W. Hamilton, aged about 12 years, was killed in a hunting accident

between Carbondale and Murphysboro, Jackson County.

George Homnard died at the residence of Paul Lingle of consumption 4 Feb 1882.

Alex Stevenson, aged 70 years, died of pneumonia at the residence of his nephew at Cobden 3 Feb 1882,

and was buried at Saratoga.

Infant daughter of William and Jennie Green, of Cobden, died 6 Feb 1882, and was buried in Rich

Cemetery.

 

18 Feb 1882:

Infant child of R. Kiger died last week and was buried Friday (17 Feb 1882)

 

25 Feb 1882:

Mrs. William Henry died west of Dongola of small pox.

Mrs. Eddy Ehmon, aged 22 years, died of consumption 15 Feb 1882.

Joseph J. Hillyer, aged 2 years, died of pneumonia 19 Feb 1882.

Only infant son of Tim O’Conner died 17 Feb 1882.

Jane E. Baker, wife of B. Jack Baker, died of pneumonia last Saturday (18 Feb 1882), and was buried in

Pleasant Hill Cemetery.

Simon P. Hiller died at his residence six miles east of Makanda last Tuesday (21 Feb 1882).

Joseph Pearson, aged 70 years, died at his residence near America, Pulaski County, where he had resided

for about 40 years.

Walter Sanderson died at the residence of his father in Pulaski County, of consumption 12 Feb 1882.

Susan Evans, of Tamaroa, aged 49 years, mother of Mrs. P. Thompson and Mrs. George Ellis, died at

the residence of George Ellis in Jonesboro 23 Feb 1882, and was buried at Tamaroa.

 

4 Mar 1882:

Philip Mead, only son of Philip and Clara Mead, born 25 Dec 1874, aged 7 years, 2 months, died of

scarlet fever 25 Feb 1882, and was buried in Cobden Cemetery.  (See also 25 Mar 1882, issue.)

 

11 Mar 1882:

Ella (Owen) Miller, wife of Alex Miller, of Makanda, died from burns when a coal oil lamp exploded

Tuesday night (7 Mar 1882).

Kenneth Finley, son of Etwood Finley, aged 7 years, died of scarlet fever 5 Mar 1882.

 

18 Mar 1882:

Charles Riley, African American, aged 14 years, died of spinal disease.

Charles Hunsaker, uncle of B.M. Hunsaker, J.C. Hunsaker, Lydia Brown, Nancy Frick and

Samuel Hargrave, aged 85 years, died at High Point, Mo., 1 Feb 1882.  He came to Union County in 1809 with his parents and moved to Missouri in 1836.

 

25 Mar 1882:

Frank Morgan died of sciatic rheumatism at Alto Pass 19 Mar 1882.

Wife of T.C. Cozby died at Jonesboro Thursday (23 Mar 1882), and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery.

Catharine Dougherty, widow of John Dougherty, aged 74 years, died at her residence in Jonesboro 28

Mar 1882, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery.

 

8 Apr 1882:

Mrs. A.S. Wilbur, aged 50 years, died at Dongola 26 Mar 1882.

Mrs. Griffin, mother of Mrs. Adam Buck, aged 80 years, died at Cobden of old age 30 Mar 1882.

Harry Hall, only son of T.W.C. and Emma Hall, aged 7 months, died of spinal meningitis at the residence

of F.H. Hall in Anna 4 Apr 1882.

William “Bill” Jones, of Anna, was stabbed to death by his father, 72-year-old Anderson Jones, in Sams

& Brown Saloon in Jonesboro Friday (31 Mar 1882).   (See also 7 Sep 1895, issue.) 

 

22 Apr 1882:

Alex Crunk, aged 17 years, died of consumption 13 Apr 1882, and was buried in Cobden Catholic Cemetery.

Daughter of Henry Sanders, brother of George W. Sanders, aged 12 years, was run over by a train one

mile from Makanda.

Son of Widow Vance died last week and was buried Sunday (16 Apr 1882).

Matilda Jane Hess, wife of Isaac J. Hess, born 28 May 1833, died 15 Apr 1882, and was buried in Union

Cemetery.  (See also 29 Apr 1882, issue.)

 

29 Apr 1882:

Philip H. Bently, son of Dr. William H. Bently, of Marion, Williamson County, aged 21 years, died

suddenly 18 Apr 1882.

Mrs. E.R. Nash, wife of R.C. Nash, born in Davie Co., N.C., died at Jonesboro 13 Apr 1882.

William R. Hodge was killed six miles north of Vienna, Johnson County, by Stephen Copenheaper 13

Jun 1880.  Copenheaper was found not guilty of murder by jury in Johnson County.

 

6 May 1882:

William Rice Sr., father of Belle Rice of Cobden, died of pneumonia at Union Town, Kan., 27 Apr 1882.

 

27 May 1882:

Letha Trees, wife of Robert Trees, aged 69 years, died 24 May 1882.

Samuel Frost died three miles west of Dongola of consumption, and was buried in St. John’s Cemetery.

 

3 Jun 1882:

Kittie O’Donnell leaped from a train between Dongola and Anna and died at Dongola Tuesday (30 May 1882).

Isaac Tinsley, born in Henderson Co., S.C., aged 84 years, 4 months, 4 days, died at his residence two

and a half miles west of Jonesboro 10 May 1882, and was buried in McClure Cemetery.  He came to Illinois in 1818.  His first wife died 13 Sep 1834.

Willie Hobbs, brakeman on Illinois Centrall Railroad, died.

 

10 Jun 1882:

Daughter of Jordan Bornley, of Anna, was burned to death five miles east of Anna 15 May 1882.

 

24 Jun 1882:

Frank Hagler, son of Squire Hagler, died of diptheria at Anna.

 

1 Jul 1882:

Archey Ridenhower, of near Dongola, aged about 60 years, committed suicide by hanging himself.

James W. Bayles was murdered by Tom Church.  (See also 8 Jul 1882, issue.)

Dr. J.V. Schuchardt, father of the late D. Schuchardt, of Jonesboro, died at his residence in Golconda 25 Jun 1882.

Wilson Store, patient at Illinois Southern Hospital for the Insane in Anna, died Thursday (29 Jul 1882),

and was buried in Metropolis, Massac County.

 

8 Jul 1882:

Elder Wiley Chamness, father of the pastor at Pleasant Hill Elder T.W. Chamness, died at his residence

in Williamson County.

Henry Nosling, son-in-law of Harris Rendleman, overheated in harvest field and died 3 Jul 1882.

 

15 Jul 1882:

John L. Rhodes, son of William and A.J Rhodes, aged 2 years, 3 months, 10 days, died at his residence

in Anna 8 Jul 1882.

 

22 Jul 1882:

John J. McIntosh, born 15 Sep 1830, Jonesboro, aged 51 years, 10 months, 2 days, husband of Caroline

(Marberry) McIntosh, was thrown from his wagon returning from the mill to home, four miles east of Ullin, Pulaski County, died 17 Jul 1882, and was buried in Auburn Cemetery.  He was captain of Co. F, 109th Infantry during the Civil War.  (See also 29 Jul 1882,  and 20 Feb 1897, issues.)

Anderson Jones, aged about 60 years, was hit on horseback by a runaway team last Monday on Heacock

Street in Jonesboro and died Tuesday (18 Jul 1882) or 17 Jul 1882.  He killed his son in April 1882 in self defense. Anderson was the head of the Jones family and came to Anna from Tennessee before the Civil War (7 Sep 1895, issue).

  

29 Jul 1882:

John Snyder, African American, was killed by Henry Clay alias Sims, African American, at the corner of

9th and Biddle St., St. Louis, 10 days ago.  Sims was arrested in Cairo, Alexander County.

 

5 Aug 1882:

Charles Mosby killed himself at Chester Prison by eating sulfur from matches Tuesday (1 Jul 1882).

Samuel Melton was crushed between train cars at Belle Rive, Jefferson County.

Ethlinda A. Linn, wife of J.P. Linn, born in Delphi, N.Y., aged 47 years, died of consumption at  her

residence near Cobden 28 Jul 1882, and was buried in Cobden Cemetery.  (See also 19 Aug 1882, issue.)

 

12 Aug 1882:

Son of Seth Ellison, of Ullin, Pulaski County, died of congestive chill 6 Aug 1882.

Daughter of George Cantrell, of Ullin, Pulaski County, died of congestive chill 8 Aug 1882.

Wife of John K. Tripp, of a few miles west of Jonesboro, died last Sunday (6 Aug 1882).

Michael Weismier, of Jonesboro, father of Mrs. Heashbiller, born 3 Aug 1812, in Austria, aged 70 years,

5 days, died of inanition 8 Aug 1882.  He came to America in 1852.

 

19 Aug 1882:

Douglas Hathcock was murdered by James Goodman at a saloon in Ullin, Pulaski County, 12 Aug 1882.

 

26 Aug 1882:

Thomas J. McClure, aged 55 years, 11 months, 15 days, died of dropsy of heart at residence at Clear

Creek, Alexander County, 23 Aug 1882, and was buried in the cemetery near his residence.  He came to Illinois from Ohio in 1840.  (See also 2 Sep 1882, and 16 Sep 1882, issues.)

 

9 Sep 1882:

Tommie Hewes, infant son of John and Martha Hewes, of Jonesboro, died Friday (8 Sep 1882).

 

16 Sep 1882:

D.A. Lawrence, of Cobden, father of Henry Lawrence, died of heart disease 9 Sep 1882.

Wife of Col. S.S. Taylor, of Cairo, Alexander County, died at Springfield 3 Sep 1882, and was buried in

Beech Ridge Cemetery.

 

23 Sep 1882:

Mrs. Sheppard, of Cobden, was buried in Cobden Cemetery.

Dr. John Harwood, born in 1806 in Salisbury, N.C., died at Anna 21 Sep 1882.  He came to Illinois in

1840 from Indiana and came to Anna in 1860.  (See also 30 Sep 1882, issue.)

Giles Collins, oldest son of Judge N.B. Collins, died at Alto Pass Monday (18 Sep 1882)

 

30 Sep 1882:

Jennie Bouton Agnew, oldest daughter of Dr. F.M. Agnew, aged 7 years, died of diptheria at Makanda 23

Mrs. Ford, of Ullin, Pulaski County, died Friday (6 Oct 1882).

 

14 Oct 1882:

Dr. Henry M. Town, formerly of Union County, brother-in-law of Henry Frick of Cobden, was killed

when thrown from a wagon during a prairie fire at his farm in Redfield, Dakotas.

 

21 Oct 1882:

Only child and daughter of Samuel Bryant, aged about 12 months, died at Springville 16 Oct 1882.

 

11 Nov 1882:

John Maneece, of Cobden, died of consumption, and was buried at Saratoga Cemetery Tuesday (7 Nov 1882).

 

18 Nov 1882:

Thomas Smith, aged about 16 years, died of pneumonia 14 Nov 1882.

Malinda Deuchel, wife of Joseph Deuchel, aged 24 years, 3 months, died at the residence of Dr. White in

Jonesboro 16 Nov 1882.

 

25 Nov 1882:

William Murray was killed in a coal mine at Coulterville Wednesday (15 Nov 1882).

Jane C. Coleman, wife of P.M. Coleman, aged 62 years, died 22 Nov 1882.

The funeral of the brother of Miss Libbie Young, of Cobden, was in Kinmundy.

 

2 Dec 1882:

Mrs. Cassie Blackstone, died near Mill Creek of typhoid fever Thursday night (30 Nov 1882), and was

buried at Casper Cemetery.

Mrs. Nancy Tash, aged 62 years, died at the residence of her son-in-law Fred Freshet in Ullin, Pulaski

County, 27 Nov 1882.

 

9 Dec 1882:

The funeral of the infant child of John Gleason, of Ullin, Pulaski County, was in Jonesboro.

Mr. A. Elam died in Anna 4 Dec 1882.

John McGuire, Jr., aged 10 years, died at Makanda of diptheria last Friday (8 Dec 1882).

 

16 Dec 1882:

Widow of A. Elam died 13 Dec 1882.  She had a son in Iowa.

 

6 Jan 1883:

William Murphy died at his residence east of Wetaug, Pulaski County, Friday night (5 Jan 1883).

Alfred Keller, of east of Dongola, died Saturday (30 Dec 1882).

Carrie Bizzell, daughter of I.N. Bizzell, aged 22 years, 8 months, died at the residence of her parents in

Anna 1 Jan 1883.

Wife of Richard Winn died at her residence in Jonesboro 27 Dec 1882.

 

13 Jan 1883:

Dr. John J. Goyer, father of Mrs. B.M. Hunsaker, born in 1793 in Fredericktown, Md., aged 90 years,

died at his residence in Jonesboro 9 Jan 1883, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery.

Dr. William J. Karraker, oldest son of Nathan Karraker, husband of Minnie L. (Montgomery)

Karraker, aged 27 years, 3 months, 2 days, died of typhoid fever at his residence three or four miles east of Dongola 3 Jan 1883.  (See also 20 Jan 1883, issue.)

 

20 Jan 1883:

John Crowell was scalded with boiling coffee two weeks ago and died Wednesday (17 Jan 1883).

Infant son of D.W. Karraker died Friday (19 Jan 1883).

Neil McNaughton, aged 88 years, died at the residence of his son, A. McNaughton, in Anna 14 Jan 1883.

 

27 Jan 1883:

Frances C. Willard, widow of Willis Willard, mother of Willis J. Willard, daughter of Henry L. Webb,

aged 65 years, died in Chicago 25 Jan 1883, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery.  (See also 3 Feb 1883, issue.)

Lydia Gurley, daughter of George W. and Cynthia A. Gurley, died of pseudo membraneous laryngitis.

 

3 Feb 1883:

Child of William Turner, of Paradise Prairie, was given morphine for quinine and died Saturday (27 Jan 1883).

S. Maggie Nimmo, wife of Charles F. Nimmo, aged 22 years, 4 months, 27 days, died of rheumatism and

congestion of right lung and spine at her residence in Jonesboro 28 Jan 1883.

Mrs. Alonzo Fenton, daughter of Judge N.B. Collins, died of consumption at her residence one mile west

of Cobden, Sunday (21 Jan 1883), and was buried in Collins Cemetery.

Samuel McKinney died at Dongola on Monday (22 Jan 1883).

 

10 Feb 1883:

Jeremiah Brett, of Murphysboro, Jackson County, died 1 Feb 1883.

Milton Thomas, of Foreman, Johnson County, was killed by Leonard Armstrong, both African

Americans.  Armstrong was arrested in Mound City, Pulaski County.

Jennie Nimmo, youngest child of Col. A.J. Nimmo, aged 10 years, 10 days, died of pneumonia at her

residence in Jonesboro 1 Feb 1883.

Mrs. C.F. Davis, aged 79 years, died at her residence one and a half miles east of Anna 4 Feb 1883.

 

17 Feb 1883:

Lena Tilkmeyer, aged 16 years, was killed in explosion of several pounds of powder caused by a spark

from a toy pistol.

Rollie Flaugh, only son of Frank P. and Hattie Flaugh, aged 2 years, 10 days, died of capillary bronchitis

9 Feb 1883, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery.

Jacob M. Penninger, son of George W. Penninger, brother of T.J. Penninger, of New Providence,

Tenn., age nearly 21 years, died 4 Feb 1883, and was buried in St. John’s Cemetery.

John Highland, of Saratoga, died last week.  (See also 2 Dec 1882, issue.)

Frank Mendenhall, of near Mesler box factory in Cobden, died last Wednesday (14 Feb 1883).

Jacob L. Hunsaker, of Rich Precinct east of Cobden, died of Bright’s disease last week.

Heize Heeren died of pneumonia.

Asa Davis, formerly of Makanda, living in Mississippi Bottoms, was buried at Thetford Cemetery last week.

 

24 Feb 1883:

Charles Eckles was run over by a train near Ava attempting to jump from moving engine and died at

Murphysboro, Jackson County.

Wallace brothers were killed in shooting near Gillsburg, Jackson County, by David Holliday last Monday ( 19 Feb 1883).

Julius F. Karraker, son of Jacob Karraker, husband of Mary (Keller) Karraker, aged 22 years, 3

months, 18 days, died at his residence east of Dongola 19 Feb 1883.

 

3 Mar 1883:

African American named Watkins accidentally shot himself two miles north of  Ullin, Pulaski County, last week.

 

10 Mar 1883:

Benjamin Suddeth, of Murphysboro, Jackson County, aged 77 years, died in injuries from fall on the sidewalk Monday

       (5 Mar 1883).

Charles Walker, father of Fremont Walker, aged 75 (?) years, of a few miles west of Alto Pass, committed suicide

       Saturday (3 Mar 1883).

Jacob Frick, aged 82 years, 20 days, died at the residence of his son-in-law, John Shick, at the lime kiln near Ullin,

       Pulaski County, 3 Mar 1883, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery.

William Welsh, aged 40 years, died at Alto Pass of typhoid pneumonia 27 Feb 1883, and was buried in Collins Cemetery.

Mary Heston, wife of B.F. Heston, aged 19 years, died at Clear Creek, Union County, of pneumonia 28 Feb 1883.

Mrs. Joseph Benardine, of Centralia, was burned to death last week.

 

17 Mar 1883:

Henry Wilson Hunter, son of Flies B. Hunter, aged 1 year, was buried in Stone Fort Cemetery last Friday (16 Mar 1883)

William Reese, father of J.P. Reese and A.J. Reese, aged 87 years, died at residence of his son J.P. Reese

He came to Illinois in 1839.

George Washington was shot in self defense by 70-year-old Albert Honesty, both African Americans, at

St. Clair County, 2 Mar 1883.

William Boggs was murdered by David White a few weeks ago.

Peter Lentz, of Villa Ridge, Pulaski County, accidentally shot himself Tuesday last week.

Mr. Hoffman died at Sherman, Texas, of wounds.

Mr. E. Samuels was shot by Barney W. Gumport at Paris, Texas, 3 Mar 1883.

John Stephens, African American, was shot by Barney W. Gumport at Paris, Texas, 3 Mar 1883.

 

24 Mar 1883:

Benjamin Vancil, born near Dayton, Ohio, 25 Jan 1804, aged 78 years, died 11 Mar 1883, and was buried

in a family cemetery.  He came to Illinois from Grayson Co., Va., in 1822.

Morris Thomas was shot in Carbondale, Jackson County, several weeks ago and died 9 Mar 1883.

Mrs. Thurston, of Franklin County, aged 72 years, was burned to death last week.

Douglas Martin, of Franklin County, committed suicide 14 Mar 1883.

Joshua Smith, of Vienna, Johnson County, aged 60 years, was run over by a train on the Wabash

Railroad at Cairo, Alexander County, Friday night (23 Mar 1883).

Infant daughter of Cal. Hinesly, of west of Jonesboro, aged 1 year, died.

 

31 Mar 1883:

Miss Salinda Stanley committed suicide by taking morphine at the residence of Dr. J.J. Fly at Pulley's

Mill, Williamson County Wednesday (28 Mar 1883).

Katie Hunter, aged 3 years, died of diptheria two days after her brother Henry (19 Mar 1883).

Son of Sallie and the late Willie Hunter died Sunday (25 Mar 1883).

Frank Smith, son of J. Tom and Sarah A. Smith, of Makanda, died of spinal meningitis.

 

7 Apr 1883:

James Tacket, of Wycliffe, Ky., brother of Mrs. W.L. McLane of Dongola, died

Mrs. Alfred Vancil, mother of D.H. Vancil, of Cobden, and sister of D.H. Rendleman Sr. of Jonesboro,

died of bronchitis at her residence 3 Apr 1883, and was buried in Cobden Cemetery.

Boan boy, aged 4 years, was burned to death at his residence on the street behind Ussery's Opera House

in Anna on Wednesday (4 Apr 1883).

 

14 Apr 1883:

Emma Edith Thompson, daughter of Theodore W. and Lovina R. Thompson, aged 1 year, 2 months, 21

days, died of small pox at Makanda 4 Apr 1883.  (See also 7 Apr 1883, issue.)

"Grandmother" Patterson, mother of G.W. Patterson and Mrs. T.L. Bailey, died Monday (9 Apr 1883).

Mary A. Toilstedguard, of Cobden, eldest daughter of Adam Buck, aged 27 years, died at the residence

of her father of consumption 6 Apr 1883, and was buried in Cobden Cemetery.

 

21 Apr 1883:

Henry Keller, of Dongola, died.

William Griffin, aged 93 years, died at the residence of his daughter, Mrs. Pierce of Cobden, on Sunday (15 Apr 1883).

 

28 Apr 1883:

Mrs. Jessee Sheaves, of Ullin, Pulaski County, died 20 Apr 1883.

Edward Short, born in 1821 in Maryland, aged 62 years, died at his residence two and a half miles

northwest of Ullin, Pulaski County, 19 Apr 1883, and was buried in Hazelwood Cemetery.

Child of Charles Wright died of pneumonia 20 Apr 1883.

Mrs. Fannie M. Barlow, aged 65 years, 11 months, died at the home of F.M. Brown in Anna 25 Apr 1883.

 

5 May 1883:

Louisa Brown, wife of Samuel Brown, of Alto Pass, died last Saturday (28 Apr 1883).

Isaac Pullis was shot in Carbondale, Jackson County, by his brother-in-law, Elisha B. Kirby, formerly of Anna,

       24 Apr 1883.

Delila B. Powell, wife of M.V. Powell, aged 43 years, 1 month, 16 days, died in Jonesboro 2 May 1883,

and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery.

 

12 May 1883:

Ben Webb, of Makanda, died of pulmonary oedema last Saturday (5 May 1883).

 

2 Jun 1883:

Dubby White, African American, son of "a colored preacher of DuQuoin,” was run over by a train near

Makanda on Saturday (26 May 1883).

 

9 Jun 1883:

J.Z. Hunsaker had a Masonic funeral at Elmore School 24 Jun 1883.

 

23 Jun 1883:

Howard Dillow, son of W.W. Dillow, of Springville, was accidentally scalded with hot coffee, died Thursday (12 Jul 1883).

Mr. Rose, formerly of Johnson County, committed suicide by hanging himself at the insane asylum in

Anna on Monday (9 Jul 1883).

Marie Litta died at Bloomington last Saturday (7 Jul 1883)

William Sharp, formerly of Anna, was whipped to death at the command of the overseer of convicts at

Red Forks, Ark., last Saturday (21 Jul 1883).  A mob then killed the overseer.

Infant of T.J. Penninger died while visiting relatives in Tennessee last Saturday (11 Aug 1883).

Child of H.I. Lawrence, aged about 5 months, died of cholera infantum 9 Aug 1883

Infant son of C. Jensen, died of cholera infantum at the residence of Mrs. McCoubrey 5 Aug 1883, and

was buried in Cobden Cemetery.

Jane Day Maxey, wife of George W. Maxey, born 18 Mar 1833, in Smith Co., Tenn., aged 50 years, 11

months, died in the 3rd ward, Neosho, Mo., of dysentery 3 Aug 1883.

Maud M. Harwood, only child of Dr. M.V.B. and Flora Harwood, born 25 Oct 1859, in Middleton,

Iroquois County, aged 23 years, 9 months, 11 days, died of consumption 6 Aug 1883.  She came to Anna in 1863.

Earl Cover, son of J.R. Cover, aged 6 months, died 14 Aug 1883.

Mrs. John Heater died at her residence near Mill Creek 24 Aug 1883.

W.T. Tacket, father of Mrs. Dr. McLain, died near Wicklyffe, Ky.

Wiley Dillow, aged 57 years, died at his residence three miles north of Mill Creek 23 Aug 1883.

Ned McGuire fell asleep on the railroad tracks last Thursday and was killed (30 Aug 1883).

Mr. Warren, African American, was stabbed with a pocket knife by John Phillips, African American, in

Cairo, Alexander County.

Thomas Miles Rinehart, aged 34 years, 4 months, 13 days, died of epilepsy 23 Aug 1883.

Sarah (Browster) Willard, of Brooklyn, N.Y., wife of Dr. S. Willard, of Jonesboro, died at Brooklyn,

N.Y., Wednesday (29 Aug 1883).  They were married in Brooklyn, N.Y., last  Monday (27 Aug 1883).

Winnie Elmore, youngest daughter of Jesse W. and Mary Elmore, aged 6 years, died of acute dysentery

22 Aug 1883.

David Bradley, aged 35 years, fell asleep on the railroad tracks near Belleville and was killed.

Jerry Thompson, African American, had his coffee poisoned in Cairo, Alexander County, by a woman

named Cotton and died.

Louis McMurry, African American, had his coffee poisoned in Cairo, Alexander County, and died.

Frank Green, of Radom, was found murdered on railroad tracks last Monday (10 Sep 1883).

The Rev. Alonzo Durham, father of Mrs. Dr. Gay, born in Ohio in 1814, aged 69 years, died at his

residence near Alto Pass of entero gastritis 7 Sep 1883, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery.  (See also 1 Mar 1884, issue.)

Sylvia Austin, wife of G.W. Austin, born 4 Jul 1808, in Binghampton, Chenango Township, Broom Co.,

N.Y., died three miles north of Jonesboro of congestive chills 11  Sep 1883.

Mrs. Hunter, African American, of Pulaski County, aged 123 years (!), servant of Martha Washington

Alexander Robinson, aged 66 years, was run over by train one mile south of Lenzburg.

Isaiah Evans was killed in a mine near Carrier Mills, Saline County.

Ethel Maggie Nimmo, only child of Charles F. and the late Maggie Nimmo, aged 1 year, 1 month and 6 days,

      died at residence of S.H. Spann 9 Oct 1883, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery.

Edgar Salyer, only child of Jack Salyer, aged about 2 years, died 27 Sep 1883.

William W. Travis, of Bloomington, born in West Point, Ohio, aged 23 years, died of typho malarial

fever 30 Sep 1883.  He married Fannie Belle Shipman just 10 days earlier.

Mrs. George Axley, formerly Mrs. Cheeseman, mother of Mrs. John Benton, died at Carbondale,

Jackson County, 16 Oct 1883, and was buried at Dongola.

Wife of Charles Wagner died at Alto Pass 18 Oct 1883, and was buried in Mt. Tabor Cemetery.

Infant of Mrs. Charles Wagner died a few days before she died.

Alice M. Day, sister of W.S. Day, aged 25 years, 11 months, died of consumption at the residence of her

Mother, Mrs. H.D. Day, four miles east of Anna 25 Oct 1883, and was buried in Camp Ground Cemetery.  (See also 3 Nov 1883, issue.)

Mary (Miller) McIntosh, born Robertson Co., Tenn., aged 87 years, died in Jonesboro at the residence of

her daughter, Melinda Provo, 30 Oct 1883, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery. She married in 1815 John J. McIntosh.  She was the mother of three sons and four daughters, Melinda (Pipkins) Provo (born 9 Jan 1816), Hannah (Mrs. Paul) Frick, Nancy Ann (Mrs. Christian G.) Flaugh, Mary A. Samuel Moore fell asleep on the railroad tracks near Murphysboro, Jackson County, Monday night (12

Nov 1883) and was struck by a train and killed.

Son of James Fuller, of Anna, died of typhoid fever, and was buried in Anna Cemetery last Saturday (10

Nov 1883).

J.C. "Cal" Miller, son of Henry Miller, brother of A.J. Miller of Cobden, born in Anna, aged 83 years, 20

days, died at his residence in Anna 28 Nov 1883.

Mrs. C.M. Adams, of Cairo, Alexander County, died last Sunday (2 Dec 1883), and was buried in

Cobden Cemetery

Katie Mesler, oldest daughter of W.P. Mesler, aged about 12 years, died Friday (7 Dec 1883), and was

buried in Cobden Cemetery.

Marshall B. Burr, aged 63 years, died at his residence one mile north of Cobden Monday (3 Dec 1883),

and was buried in Cobden Cemetery.

Silas "Boyd" Cochrane, of Makanda, brakeman on the railroad, was killed in a train accident just inside

Union County last Monday  (3 Dec 1883).

The Rev. Truman S. Low, born in Essex Co., N.Y., aged 56 years, died at his residence in Cobden 8 Dec1883.
