Posted by Berna David Hunter <[email protected]> on Tue, 08 Jun 1999

I have been looking for a very long time for information on my gr gr Grandmother, and I hope you can help me. Louisa Ellenor HUNTER was born on 02 October 1843 in Trenton Ohio. Her family traveled from Butler County, Ohio, too, Vandalia, Illinois in Fayette County, where she was married to a Civil War veteran, a man named Richard MEEK. Shortly after the marriage the family moved near Effingham, Illinois and Louisa HUNTER MEEK gave birth to her first son, my great-grandfather James HUNTER in 1863. It was soon after the birth of Louisa’s second son Samuel Barton MEEK, also born in Effingham, that the family moved to Butler and Carter County Missouri, and this is where Richard MEEK died.

Louisa HUNTER MEEK, then married Richard's brother Samuel MEEK and the family moved to Beaver County Oklahoma where they settled and bought land. Shortly thereafter, Louisa HUNTER MEEK developed breast cancer and died in Beaver County, Oklahoma, on 27 April 1892. It is possible that she is buried at Clear Lake Cemetery near or in Beaver County,Oklahoma. Louisa HUNTER MEEK’s second husband, Samuel, settled around Madison,Oklahoma. Louisa HUNTER MEEK’s second son, Samuel Barton MEEK was a deputy Sheriff in Beaver County, Oklahoma. In Beaver County, Samuel Barton Meek donated land for a schoolhouse to be built. After Louisa HUNTER MEEK’s death, Samuel M. Meek married Edith ELLSWORTH, widow of famous outlaw, Bill DOOLIN.

It is apparent that Louisa HUNTER MEEK had family in both Fayette and Effingham counties in Illinois , because she spent a great deal of time in both counties. If so these families are lost to this line of the HUNTER and MEEK families. This is all the information that I have, would you know of anything else? Can you help me? Thank You Very Much for Your Time!

Seeking information on Anderson W. Petty who was reported to be in Fayette County prior to 1827. He was married to a Frances Bankston. He had at least one child, William. I have seen an 1805 birthdate on William. Black Hawk war muster records indicate an Anderson Petty and a William Petty were mustered in on 5/23/1832. Anderson Petty was discharged on 7/26/1832. I have traced my ggg-grandfather William A. Petty back only as far as his marriage to Nancy Taulbee in Fayette County in October, 1827. The census records indicated he was born in 1804 and that he was from Georgia. I'm hopeful that the William Petty listed with Anderson Petty is actually my ancestor.

I have tracked a Isham(Isom) PETTY from Wayne Co TN along with a Robert PETTY. They are in Fayette Co IL on the 1830 census. Isham and Robert may be father and son. Robert PETTY was married to Sarah Catherine SHIRLEY. She was born in Davidson Co TN. I know she had a brother John and a sister Kitty. Kitty married Henry HOUSE and left TN for Stoddard Co MO. Robert PETTY, John SHIRLEY and Kitty HOUSE are all in Van Zandt Co. TX in 1850. After that Kitty goes to CA. Robert moves his family to Fannin Co. TX. I lose John. Shortly after the 1830 census Robert PETTY has moved his family to Carroll Co AR and then over to Marion Co. AR. He should be there on the 1840 census but I do not pick him up as head of house there. I would like to know if Isham PETTY is the father of Robert and did Isham die in Fayette Co IL. I do not find him on the 1840 census. Over in Bond Co at the same time was a Drury and James D. PETTY. Drury was also from TN. Do all of them connect?

I am looking for any connections to a SMITH family of Shobenier, Fayette Co., ILL. James M. Smith and his wife Lucretia Jane Hamba arrived in ILL about 1864. Family lore says they left Alabama after a family arguement over slavery.

The 1870 census for Kaskaskia Twp.,Village of Shobonier lists: James 45 b. SC, Jane 45 b. SC, John 24 b. Ala,
Henry 19 b. Ala, Frances 17 b. Ala, Josephine 15 b. Ala,
Andrew 12 b. Ala, Illinois 6 b. IL, George 11/12 b. IL

JH (John or Henry?) became a furniture maker and undertaker in Nevada Mo. by 1905. Frances M. Smith was a lawyer and bank manager in Vinita OK by 1901. Two other brothers are known to have been in Kansas City Mo. around 1906.

Josephine married Albert Sweet Lee (son of Royal Newland Lee of Fayette co.?)in Shobenier in 1878 and remained in ILL until at least 1883. In 1894 their last child was born in Texas. They had children Flossie, Charles Forrest, and Albert Jr.

New information from marriage records indicated that my Delilah Donaldson (b abt 1831-2) who lived in Fayette county most of her life (but in the 1850 census was living alone in Montgomary Co.) who married first John Anderson Williams and later William Pope. The second marriage record indicated that her parents were John Donaldson and _____ Stone.

There is a possibility for Delilah's father but no real proof. There was a John Andrews Donaldson of about the correct age who was a son of Thomas Donaldson and Susannah___________. Thomas was born ~1773 and died 1/1/1838 in Fayette County. He had 2 other sons; Thomas W. (b. 3/10/1816) and Samuel. Thomas was a brother of Moses Martin Donaldson and Barnett Donaldson.

Does any of this ring a bell for any of you?
