Betty Mae Houpt, 80 of Manassas, VA, formerly of Terre Haute, IN and Palestine, IL, died Sunday, April 3, 2005, in Manassas. She was born May 14, 1924 in Mattoon, IL, the daughter of William L. Malone and Gladys Sheeks Malone. She was a receptionist and secretary for Southwood Nursing Home in Terre Haute, IN. She was a member of the First Christian Church, Palestine. She was a Girl Scout leader, enjoyed bridge and reading, was Palestine High School Homecoming Queen in 1941. She was a devoted wife and loving mother.

She married James Houpt on June 6, 1942 and he preceded her in death in November 1994. She was also preceded by her parents; her son Richard Houpt; and 2 brothers, Lester and Robert Malone.

She is survived by her son, James Houpt, Springfield, VA; her grandson, Christopher Houpt, Boston, MA, her granddaughter, Lauren Houpt, Nashville, TN; 3 sisters, Dorothy Wallace and Nancy Malone, both in Mattoon, IL, both of Mattoon, IL, and Martha Crackel, Myrtle Beach, SC; and 2 brothers, Charles Malone, Mattoon and Gene Malone, Chicago, IL.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, April 7, 2005 at the Goodwine Funeral Home, Palestine with Rev. James Delaney III officiating. Burial will be in the Palestine Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Wednesday, April 6th at the funeral home.
