Leo A. Herning, 87, of Palestine, IL, died at 10:20 a.m. Wednesday, October 13, 2004 at Chatsworth, IL, in an auto accident. He was born October 9, 1917 in Advance, Wisconsin, the son of Jacob Herning and Lena Kobs Herning. He was a chemical engineer at Universal Oil Products for 53 years and a consultant with Heritage Company in Indianapolis, IN for 13 years. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Palestine, Palestine Lions Club, and Robinson Elks Lodge #1188.

He married Helen M. McGilvra November 1938 and she preceded him in death. He married Kathryn Espy Walker June 27, 1973 and she preceded him in death July 16, 2002. He was also preceded in death by his parents; his daughter, Luanna Herning; and his brother, Leland Herning in 1906.

He is survived by 3 sons and daughters-in-law, Lance Herning and his wife and Nancy Redmond, Downers Grove, IL, Joel and Pamela Herning, Downers Grove, IL, Leland and Terri Herning, Findley, OH; 7 grandchildren, Roger and Jeffrey Herning, Downers Grove, IL, Benjamin, Kristina, and Alex Herning, Findley, OH, Christopher Herning, Rogers Park, IL, and Jonathan Herning, Evanston, IL; and 3 great grandchildren, Anna, Sarah, and Grace Herning.

Memorial services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, October 23, 2004 at the First Presbyterian Church, Palestine with Rev. Esther Pfeifer and Rev. Ron Pfeifer officiating. Burial will be in the Advance Memorial Cemetery, Advance, Wisconsin on Monday, October 25th. Visitation will be Friday, October 22nd from 5-7 p.m. at the Goodwine Funeral Home, Palestine, IL. Family has requested that in lieu of flowers memorials be made to the Palestine First Presbyterian Church.
