In 1880, they were living near her mother and stepfather in Red Vermillion Township, where Walter was a farm laborer. They have not been found following that year.

General Notes: Following his mother's marriage to Jonathan Butler, he and his sister, Ruth went to live with their uncle, Palmer Higgins in Cass County, Nebraska. Grant returned to Kansas about 1883 where he married Carrie Jane Armstrong on December 8, 1886 (?). On 1900, they lived in Grant Township, Pottawatomie County, Kansas. While on a trip to Kansas City, Kansas, Grant committed suicide. He shot himself over despondancy about some misfortune. His wife and two of his children were with him on the trip. His wife brought his body back for burial on a buckboard. Following his death in 1908, Carrie began a dry goods store in Red Vermillion Township. Her daughter Fern was a clerk in the store. She appears to have given up the store by 1920, as she was living with Fern and her husband, Mr. Knox in Grant Township, Pottawatomie County, Kansas.

Ulysses married Caroline Jane Armstrong, daughter of James Harvery Armstrong and Sarah Eugenie Eddy, in 1883 in Kansas. Caroline was born on 16 Jan 1868 in Savannah, Pottawatomie, KS and died on 29 Mar 1953 in America City Cemetery, Nemaha Co., KS at age 85.

General Notes: From at least 1900 through 1910, they were living in Crooked Creek Township, Jasper County, Illinois. In 1920, Joanna was a widow with only Bonnie remaining at home. By June 16, 1917, she states that she was a helpless invalid in Hildago, Illinois. On May 6, 1926, she was living at 613 North 22nd Street, Mattoon, Illinois. On July 14, 1936, she applied for old age relief and was living at 448 Van Buren in Gary, Indiana with her brother, Reuben. At the time, she was 72, and he was 76.

He loved playing baseball and was with the team that was the first to play under the "lights" - consisted of kerosene lanterns lining the ballfield. Whenever the family was together, there always was a ballgame with Grandpa in charge. He died at age 97; was an absolutely wonderful man and loved by everybody. General Notes: The following information was provided by Aisla and Richard Higgins 6-15-92. Lee was an excellent welder. He worked the evening shift at the Port of Entry on Kansas Avenue in Armourdale, Kansas. He went fishing every day at the Wyandotte County Laake and was known for his secret doughbait recipe, He shared the doughbait with anyone who wanted some, but he kept the recipe a secret. His refrigerator was always well-stocked with jars full of this bait. He would give most of his daily catch of fish away...so the fishing was more a pasttime tha anything else. Richard spent a lot of time with his grandfather Lee. After his divorce from Minnie Ha Ha, he moved to Kansas City and married Myrtle Hale. He died there.
