General Notes: Richard Newton Highsmith, seventh child and fifth son of John and Polly, was born April 1, 1828, in Crawford County, IL. He lived there until 1869, except for a period of service with the Union Army. Richard married Polly Ann Carter on April 10, 1851. Polly was born about 1835, the daughter of Benjamin Carter and Harriet Parker, both of whom had ancestry extending back to the early colonial period. In IL, Richard followed in his father's footsteps and was a schoolteacher. His obituary suggests that he may also have held public offices, stating that he "held offices of honor and trust." He was also an active Mason, and he was a life-long Republican. In his early 30's, the father of five young children, Richard joined Company E, 32nd IL Infantry. He was with Sherman's Army on the "march to the sea." At the battle of Kinston, North Carolina, about March 1, 1865, he injured his right leg when he jumped a ditch carrying a 100-pound box of cartridges. In 1890 he began receiving a military disability pension
