Abner Greer, b. Nov 2, 1799, d. Nov 8, 1845. Buried in Lawrenceville Cemetery, Lawrenceville, Lawrence County, IL.
Probably born in Livingston County, Kentucky. Son of Jonathan Greer (d. ca 1808, when family lived in Livingston Co, Ky) and Mary maiden name unknown. Abner's paternal grandparents were James T. Greer Sr. and Elizabeth maiden name unknown who both died in Caldwell Co, Ky, in 1810.
Abner had 3 siblings:
--Elizabeth Greer b. 1797 in South Carolina (Laurens County?), md. Hugh Kinkead (s.o. Samuel) 1817 Caldwell Co, Ky. Elizabeth moved with husband Hugh, Hugh's father Saml., brother William and sister Ealsa (Elcy) Miller (widow of Joseph who d. in Caldwell County) and Ealsa's 8 children to Edwards Co, Illinois spring of 1819. This part of Edwards Co later became part of Lawrence Co., IL.
--Jonathan Greer b. ca 1802-d. after Sept. 1866, lived most of his adult life in Christian Co, Ky
--Mary Greer md. Wm. Laughlin 1821 Christian Co, Ky and lived adult life in Caldwell Co, Webster Co and Hopkins Co, IL.
Did Abner Greer go to Illinois in 1819 with his sister Elizabeth and the Kinkeads?
In 1832 Abner raised a company of men from Edwards County, IL, called "Captain Abner Greer's Company, Spy Battalion of Illinois Mounted Volunteers" to fight in the Black Hawk War.
1834-1836 Abner Greer was elected Representative Illinois General Assembly for Lawrence County, Ill.
1837 Abner was appointed fund commissioner and county agent, Lawrence County, Ill.
1838, Lawrence County, Ill.: Abner and John Mieure bought 2 tracts land in Lawrence Co. as tenants in common. Total of 134 acres. John Mieure came to Lawrence Co., IL, from Virginia as young man and went into partnership in a dry goods store with a Mr. Greer (probably Abner). One source refers to a man named Ryan having clerked as a young man in the store of Captain Greer in Lawrenceville.
1838 - 1840 Abner Greer elected Senator to Ill. Genl. Assmby. for Lawrence, Crawford & Jasper Counties.
1836-1838 Lawrence Co, Ill. Abner Greer appointed annually by county commissioners' court as Treasurer of Lawrence County.
Abner Greer was appointed School Commissioner, Sept. 7, 1836, and served until 1842.
Abner Greer's sister Elizabeth became widowed 1824 when Hugh Kinkead died. She remarried 1827 in Edwards Co, IL to widower John Spencer Woodworth. They later lived in Crawford Co, IL, had 4 children, one named Abner Palmer Woodworth. Presumably the name Abner was in honor of Elizabeth's brother. Elizabeth Woodworth remained in Crawford County, IL, and died sometime after 1870.
In October 1836 Abner Greer traveled to Caldwell Co, Kentucky, to obtain powers of attorney from his brother Jonathan and sister Mary Laughlin (had already obtained same from his sister and brother-in-law the Woodworths of Crawford Co, IL). His purpose was to go on behalf of his family down to Wilcox Co., Alabama, to obtain a portion of their Uncle James T. Greer's estate which had been left to the heirs of James's deceased brother Jonathan Greer (d. 1808 Livingston Co, Ky).
Note-- Abner Greer's widowed mother Mary remarried in 1819 to Wm. Hopson of Christian Co, Ky.
