Following is one of the Biographies and Stories which where gathered by Charles Sumner McKamy in the 1950s for publication in a Crawford County History Book. Unfortunately he passed away before the book was published.
Frank Lawhead -- son of Isaac Newton Lawhead, who was named after an uncle, Isaac Newton Lawhead, a United Presbyterian minister, of Washington, Iowa. My father came to Crawford County from Greene County, Ohio; my Grandfather, Joseph L. Lawhead and Grandmother, whose maiden name was Galliway, came from Green County, Ohio to Crawford County about 1870, driving a team of horses and farm wagons some 250 miles in three weeks.
Father had one brother, George Lawhead in Crawford County, who practiced medicine here; our family consisted of seven children, three boys and four girls, namely, Frank 77 years of age, Charles W. 73, Fred B. 67, all alive at this time, Adda, Nellie, Kate and Nettie L., only Nettie now alive, living at Lawrenceville, Illinois.
I spend my time between my two homes, one located at Ft. Myers, Florida at 1309 Canal St. and the other at Knoxville, Tennessee at 121 Glenard Place.
At nineteen years of age I went to Austin College in Effingham, Illinois for one year, then I went to Maryville, Tennessee for one year and after that I attended school at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville, Tennessee, graduating in 1903, then I read law in Knoxville, where I was admitted to the bar and began practicing law in 1905 in Knoxville, where I have maintained an office for forty-nine years, while I am at this time semi-retired spending six months or more in Ft. Myers, Florida each year.
In 1907 I was married in Maryville, Tenn. And my wife departed this life, without issue, in 1936, and in 1938 I married Ruby DeArmond of Knoxville, Tenn.
Author's note: The foregoing history was dictated to me on March 23, 1954 at his beautiful cottage home in Ft. Myers, which he enjoyed so much and where he owned three cottages adjoining his home with about three acres of very fertile land where he cultivates and raises most varieties of beautiful flowers and garden truck, as well as citrus fruits such as oranges, lemons, grape fruit, etc. where he spent many pleasant hours on his gardens until he passed away in Ft. Myers.
