A Former Citizen Honored
The Crawford County friends of Don C. Crampton, formerly of this county, will be glad to hear of is election a one of the county commissioners of Tremont county, Colo., on the silver fusion ticket. His majority was 625. The Canon City (Col.) Clipper publishes his portrait and gives an interesting biographical sketch of him, from which we extract the following.
"Don C. Crampton, Silver Fusion nominee for county commissioner, was born October 20, 1848, in Crawford county, Illinois. Twenty years of his life were spent in the school room, sixteen as a student and four as a teacher. Most of his boyhood, when out of school, was spent on the farm, and when older his vacations were improved as traveling salesman in various lines. Later he traveled four consecutive years for one house. He was a government mail contractor for six years, covering routes in Illinois, Indiana, Ohio and Pennsylvania, being under bond for the faithful performance of his duties in the sum of $225,000. His health having been impaired by close application to study and business, he came westward and spent three years in camp life in the Ozark mountain region of Missouri and Arkansas. He crossed the plains from Arkansas to Colorado in 1883 with a herd of cattle. Returning to Arkansas, he crossed the plains a second time with cattle, and arrived in Fremont county in 1886, and located at Twelve Mile Park, where he has continued to reside devoting his attention to live stock and horticulture. After ranching and "batching" four years, Mr. Crampton again returned to Arkansas, not for cattle but for a helpmate, which he secured in the person of Mrs. Seybert, widow of Dr. B. S. Seybert and daughter of Gen. James M. Gatewood."
