WHITNEY, Anne Elizabeth (Jacobs)
Anne Elizabeth (Jacobs) Whitney (1927 - 2010)
Anne Elizabeth Jacobs Whitney (born Anne Jacobs), daughter of Jewel Alkire Jacobs and Donovan Wyatt Jacobs, died of a stroke in Portland, Ore., Jan. 25, 2010. She was 82.
She was predeceased by her grandmother, Mamie Jacobs, her grandfather, Henry Jacobs, her aunt, Bernita Jacobs Ferrar and her uncle, Homer Jacobs, all of Virginia.
Donovan and Jewel Jacobs left Virginia for California early in their marriage. Anne was born in Hollywood, Calif., Sept. 12, 1927, the first of three children. She is dearly missed by her faithful brother and fellow adventurer, Donovan Jacobs of Portland, Ore., and her sister, Caroline of Santa Monica, Calif.
Growing up in southern California, Anne gained a love of the sea. Trained in the art of oil painting in Italy, and later the science of navigating sailboats, she realized her dream of becoming a successful marine artist. Based in New York City, she lived life to the fullest experiencing yacht races, expeditions to the South Pacific and remote areas of the Amazon and Australia.
Anne spent many years living in the Lake Chapala area of Mexico with dear friends and happy memories. She is remembered as a fun-loving and creative member of the Lake Chapala Society who was always generating ideas for new adventures. As her friend Pam Steed noted, "This little corner of the planet will be a lot quieter without her laughter and her ability to energize everything."
She has now embarked on her greatest adventure, meeting the Creator of the nature she loved so well. The family encourages you to send your memories to her blog: https://www.carepages.com/carepages/Anne_Whitney_says_goodbye.
Anne Jacobs always considered Virginia her ancestral home and made frequent visits with her children to her Virginia family, which included the Skiles, Alkires and Jacobs. Her mother, Jewel, stayed behind in Carmel, Calif., as she, a widow at the age of 46, became a cloistered nun of the Carmelite order and remained one for 40 years.
Anne is survived by three children, Judy Strauss of Reno, Nev., Jeff Snoyer (m. Lynn) of Dallas and Janet Snoyer (m. Daniel Evett) of Brooktondale, N.Y.; six grandchildren; and her two beloved wirehaired dachshunds, Risa and Max, now living with family.
All are welcome at the family's memorial service to be held at the Virginia Church of Christ, 282 East Beardstown Road in Virginia, at 2 p.m. Saturday. Her children, Judy, Jeff and Janet, and granddaughter, Clara Gabriel Snoyer, will welcome you to her service.
