Daniel Spears, 1908-2006, Beardstown
   Daniel P. Spears, 98, of Beardstown, died Thursday morning, Nov. 2, 2006, at Passavant Area Hospital in Jacksonville.
   He was born Aug. 25, 1908, in Morgan County, the son of William Obed and Josephine Vasconcellos Spears. He married Zelma L. Mason on March 15, 1936, in Bluff Springs, and she preceded him in death Jan. 18, 2003.
   He is survived by two sons, Charles (wife, Jaye) of Jacksonville and Robert of Beardstown; one daughter, Phyllis Spears Hill of Dawson; seven grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Bill, Floyd and one in infancy; and three sisters, Marguerite Place, Nellie Perry and one in infancy.
   Mr. Spears was a member of Bluff Springs United Methodist Church. He retired from the CB&Q Railroad in 1965, was employed in maintenance at Beardstown High School for 10 years, worked at Bluff Springs Elevator and also worked at Harris Market in Beardstown for several seasons. He was a farmer, enjoyed making wine and always looked forward to spring to plant a huge vegetable garden.
   Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Monday at Sager Funeral Home in Beardstown, with burial at Beardstown City Cemetery. The family will meet friends from 3-5 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to Cass County Home Health. Condolences may be sent to [email protected].

Zelma L. Spears - 1915-2003 - Beardstown
   Zelma L. Spears, 87, of rural Beardstown, died Saturday afternoon, Jan. 18, 2003, at Heritage Manor East Nursing Home in Beardstown.
   She was born April 5, 1915, in Parnell, Ky., the daughter of Robert Mason and Minnie Cole Mason. She was married [to] Daniel P. Spears March 15, 1936, at the home of Oswald Jokisch in Bluff Springs, and he survives.
   She is also survived by two sons, Robert (wife, Bobbye) of Beardstown, and Charles (wife, Jaye) of Jacksonville; one daughter, Phyllis Hll of Dawson; seven grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; one brother, Orville Hamm of Colorado; and two sisters; Zora Lomelino of White Hall and Veda Delay of Pekin.
   She was preceded in death by one son-in-law; three brothers, Alvin Hamm, Albert Hamm and Bill Mason; and three sisters, Phyllis Turner, Remia Larson, and an infant sister.
   Mrs. Spears attended the Bluff Springs United Methodist Church. She had spent her entire married life in the Beardstown area raising her family and working at the Arrow Restaurant and Yates Restaurant. Zelma was also a licensed CNA for the Schmidt Memorial Hospital and Meyers Nursing Homes. She and her husband were honored with an open house by their children for their 65th wedding anniversary March 18, 2001.
   Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at Goodwin Funeral Home of Beardstown, with burial at Beardstown City Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. today at the funeral home with the family meeting friends from 5-8 p.m. Memorials are suggested to the donor's choice. John Paul Spencer, M.D.
   John Paul Spencer, MD, 68 of Houston, TX and formerly of Beardstown, died May 22, 2012, in his home. He was born July 4, 1943, in Beardstown, IL, the son of Dr. Robert Andrew and Magdalena “Billie” Billmayer Spencer. John was a graduate of Beardstown High School's class of 1961. He then went to the University of Illinois and received his Bachelor of Science in 1965. In 1970, he graduated from The University of Illinois School of Medicine, and was a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology. John devoted his life to the practice of medicine. He was fiercely passionate in any endeavor; a trait he passed on to his children. He will be remembered for his booming laugh, his immeasurable compassion for others, and his service to those who needed him. He is survived by five children - Cheryl (husband Rusty) Shepherd and Debbie (husband Scott) Klintworth of Houston, TX; Robert “Bob” (wife Phoung) Spencer of Dallas, TX; Laura (husband Scott) Severt of Tyler, TX; and John (wife Jonai) Spencer of Houston, TX; nine grandchildren - Ryan and Courtney Shepherd; Spencer and Sophia Klintworth; Seth Tones; Meredith Severt; and Kaylee, John, and Arianna Spencer; three brothers -Stephen (wife Pamela) Spencer of Denver, Colorado; Timothy (wife Mel) Spencer of Denton, TX; and David (wife Maria) Spencer of Plano, TX; one sister - Judy (husband Rick) Deaton of Beardstown; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother Robert Andrew Spencer, Jr., and one sister Dianne Carol Spencer. Funeral services will be held at 2 PM Saturday, May 26, 2012 at Sager Funeral Home in Beardstown. Burial will be in Beardstown City Cemetery. The family will meet with friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Memorials have been suggested to The American Heart Association. Richard M. 'Dick' Spencer, 1945-2003
   Richard M. "Dick" Spencer, 58, of Beardstown, died Monday afternoon, Oct. 20, 2003, at St. John's Hospital in Springfield.
   He was born Jan. 17, 1945, in Jacksonville, the son of Ronald and Norma Smith Spencer. He married Donna Jean Muirheid on March 28, 1965, in Pleasant Hill, and she preceded him in death in 1979. He married Karen Tweddell on May 25, 1984, in Beardstown, and she survives in Beardstown.
   He is also survived by his parents of Beardstown; one daughter, Lynette (husband, Ken) Goldsmith of Beardstown; two sons, James (wife, Sharmen) of Naval Air Station Sigonella, Sicily, and Curtis Spencer of Macomb; two step-daughters, Terri (husband, Mitch) Lillie of Bluff Springs and Tiffany Logsdon (companion, Carrie Fisher) of Radford, Va.; one stepson, Thad (wife, Lisa) Logsdon of Sesser; eight grandchildren, Michael Edwards, Vern Goldsmith, Shane Swan, Shania Bacon, Dylan Logsdon, Dalton Logsdon, Brian Krominga and Chelsea Krominga; and one great-granddaughter.
   Mr. Spencer graduated from Beardstown High School in the class of 1963. He was employed with Central Illinois Public Service/Ameren in Beardstown since March of 1980. As a "history buff," he enjoyed watching the History Channel and traveling to historic places. He was also a NASCAR and hunting enthusiast. His great joy in life came from time spent with his family.
   Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at Sager Funeral Home in Beardstown, with burial at Beardstown City Cemetery. Family will meet friends from 4-7 p.m. today at the funeral home.    Harry C. Spicer, Jr, 76, of Beardstown died Saturday, August 6, 2011, in his home. He was born March 20, 1935 in Beardstown, the son of Harry and Alberta Schall Spicer. He married Fairy Eaton on November 19, 1955 in Beardstown. Surviving is his wife Fairy Spicer of Beardstown; one son Harry (wife Laura) Spicer III of Mineral, VA; two daughters Karla (husband Jim) Stice of Jacksonville and Cindy (husband Gary) Shelton of Vandalia, MO; ten grandchildren Hillary and Molly Stice, Chris and Brandy Shelton, Luke Shindlebeck, Zack and Kent Spicer, Lance Jr. and Justin Stanton, and Heather Coffey; nine great grandchildren; and four sisters Mildred McCormick of St. Louis, MO, Betty Hiles of Mt. Sterling , Lee Etta Tippey of Canton, and Susan Henry of Beardstown. He was preceded in death by his parents, his daughter Chance Stanton, his brother Roland Spicer, and his half-brother Johnny Baptist. Harry graduated from Arenzville High School. He was employed with Oscar Mayer in Beardstown until his retirement. He enjoyed fishing and hunting. Memorial services will be held at 11 AM Wednesday, August 10, 2011, at Frederick Christian Church. The family will meet with friends one hour prior to the memorial service at the church on Wednesday. In lieu of flowers the family has requested memorial donations be made to Frederick Christian Church. Sager Funeral Home in Beardstown is in charge of arrangements.

   Marjorie Spicer, 77, Ashland, died Jan. 23, at Hillsboro.
   Mrs. Spicer was born in Buckhorn Township, Brown County, Sept. 19, 1902, daughter of Plesant and Margaret McDannald Butler. She married Charles Albert Spicer Dec. 13, 1919, and he died Feb. 23, 1972.
   Survivors include three sons, Charles Lloyd, Jacksonville, and Rev. W. Wayne and Leo L., both of Ashland; a daughter, Violet Smallwood, Witt; a brother, Charles Butler, Lincoln; 14 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son.
   Mrs. Spicer was a member of the First Church of God in Ashland where services were held at 1:30 p.m. Jan. 26 with Rev. Jimmie Cooper officiating. Burial was in Versailles Cemetery.

   Mary L. Spicer, 84, of Ashland, IL died Thursday, December 18, 2008 at the Jacksonville Convalescent Center in Jacksonville, IL.
   She was born August 17, 1924 in Prentice, IL; the daughter of Lloyd and Ethel Rome Summers. She married Leo L. Spicer Sr. on September 26, 1958 in Virginia, IL and he survives.
   She is also survived by a son, Leo Spicer Jr. of Pleasant Plains and two sisters Betty Noel and Patsy Hand (husband, Lee) all of Ashland. She was preceded in death by her parents and three sisters, Jane Summers, Elma Summers, and Eva Thomas.
   Graveside services will be held 2:00 PM Tuesday, December 23, 2008 at Pleasant Plains Cemetery in Pleasant Plains. There will be no visitation. W. Wayne Spicer, 1937-2006
   W. Wayne Spicer, 69, of Ashland, died Saturday afternoon, Oct. 21, 2006, at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield.
   He was born April 24, 1937, in Versailles, the son of Charles and Ellen Butler Spicer. He married Beverly Orris on Feb. 27, 1958, in Murrayville, and she survives.
   He is also survived by two daughters, Laura McCombs of Springfield and Teresa J. (husband, Andy) Thompson of rural Philadelphia; three grandchildren, Stephanie McCombs of Springfield and Kaitlin Grace and Samantha Rae Thompson, both of rural Philadelphia; one brother, Leo LaRue Spicer Sr. (wife, Mary) of Ashland; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Herschel and Lloyd; and one sister, Violet Smallwood.
   Mr. Spicer worked for PPG Industries and owned and operated Spicer Paint Supply Inc. in Springfield for over 40 years prior to his retirement. An ordained Church of God minister, he served the First Church of God in Jacksonville and the First Church of God in Ashland for several years in addition to preaching in several area churches. In his spare time, he enjoyed gardening, collecting train memorabilia, and spending time with his grandchildren, family and friends.
   Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at Massie-Buchanan Funeral Home in Ashland, with burial in Ashland Cemetery. Howard Spoon, 64, of Beardstown dies; funeral Thursday
   Beardstown Howard Spoon, 64, of rural Beardstown, died Monday September 12, 1983, at 10:40 p.m. at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield. He was born December 19, 1918, in Concord, a son of Claude and Nina Mallicoat Spoon. He married Ruth Launer, December 9, 1950, in Pittsfield and she survives with one step-son, Donald Harris of Beardstown, one step-daughter, Mrs. Kenneth (Ruth Ann) Vincent of Beardstown, two sons, Gary Spoon of Arenzville and Robert Spoon of Beardstown, one daughter, Mrs. Kenneth (Susan) Collins of Rushville, two brothers, John Spoon of West Columbia, S.C., and Harmon Spoon of Springfield, tow sisters, Mrs. Annie Phelps of Wickenburg, Ariz., and Mrs. Betty Spurlock of Bagdad, Ariz., seven Grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother and a sister. He was a member of the First Evangelical Lutheran Church of Beardstown, a retired Cass County farmer, and operated the Cosy Country Market or the past eight years on Route 100 near Beardstown. Services will be Thursday at 10 a.m. at the Sager Northcutt Funeral Home in Beardstown with burial in City Cemetery. Opal V. Spoon, 1917-2003, Beardstown
   Opal V. Spoon, 85, of Beardstown, died Sunday morning, March 2, 2003, at Heritage South in Beardstown.
   She was born May 5, 1917, in Beardstown, the daughter of Herbert Nathan and Zelma Ann Skiles Wells. She married Herman W. Spoon Dec. 1, 1934, in Virginia, and he preceded her in death April 27, 1991.
   She is survived by two sons, Raymond (wife, Sue) of Beardstown and Dean (wife, Mary) of El Dorado, Kan.; six daughters, Lee (husband, Al) Bietsch, Sharon (husband, Fred) Spillers and Janet (husband, Bill) Petersen, all of Beardstown, Shelba Dyer of Arenzville, Bonnie (husband, Mike) O'Hara of Tifton, Ga., and Marilyn (husband, Dave) McNeil of Houston; 26 grandchildren; 43 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Wanda (husband, Bill) McGovern and Vivian Wilhite, both of Beardstown. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Harold and Vern "Shine" (surviving wife, Ella "Sis" Wells of Beardstown); three sisters, Dorothy, Leile, and Betty; one son, Herman "Woody" (surviving wife, Teri of Albany, Ga.), one son-in-law, Will Brooks; and one granddaughter.
   Mrs. Spoon attended Beardstown High School and she was a charter member of First Christian Church in Beardstown. She was formerly employed in the deli-bakery of Walker's IGA in Beardstown for 17 years.
   Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the First Christian Church in Beardstown, with burial at Beardstown City Cemetery. Friends may call after 4 p.m. Tuesday at Sager Funeral Home in Beardstown with family meeting friends from 5-7 p.m. The family will also meet with friends at the home of Fred and Sharon Spillers #2 Pine Lane, Beardstown.    Ruth Christine Spoon, 73, of Beardstown, died Tuesday afternoon, May 14, 1996, at Culbertson Memorial Hospital in Rushville. She was born Sept. 16, 1922, in Beardstown, the daughter of Richard and Lydia Krohe Launer. She married Howard Spoon December 9, 1950, in Pittsfield. He preceded her in death September 12, 1983. She is survived by three sons, Don Harris of Beardstown, Gary (wife, Cathy) Spoon of Camden and Robert (wife, Debbie) Spoon of Arenzville; two daughters, Mrs. Kenneth (Ruth Ann) Vincent of Beardstown and Mrs. Kenneth (Susan) Collins of Rushville; two brothers, Gilbert Launer and Earl Launer, both of Beardstown; two sisters, Violet Reichert of Beardstown and Ruby Hacker of Jacksonville; nine grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by four brothers, Everett. Ralph, Harvey, and Marvin. Mrs. Spoon graduated from Beardstown High School in 1940. She was a member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church in rural Arenzville. She previously worded at Wells-Lamont Glove Factory in Beardstown and retired from Herzberg New Method Bookbinders in Jacksonville. Most recently she was employed by the Beardstown Park District. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday at Sager Funeral Home in Beardstown with burial at Beardstown City Cemetery. There will be an informal visitation 4-8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Claude N. “Salty” Spradlin, 83, of Ashland, IL bid his final farewell on Thursday, May 21, 2015 at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield, IL.
   He was born March 22, 1932 in Jacksonville, the son of Joe Tom and Letha Twyford Spradlin. He married Doris A. Cagle on November 27, 1985 in Ashland and she survives.
   Salty is also survived by three children, Claudia Hart of Ashland, John Spradlin (fiancé, Lila Ruyle) of Meredosia, and Ellen Lapota (husband, Mike) of DeMotte, IN; two stepsons, Pat Cagle (wife, Kelly) of Beardstown and Bob Cagle (wife, Jennifer) of Beardstown; five grandchildren; five great grandchildren; two sisters, Donna Jean Nickel of Jacksonville and Janet Ruth Wilson (husband, Ed) of Louisiana, MO; and several nieces and nephews.
   He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Louise Fox (surviving husband, Paul of Jacksonville); and two brothers, Jack Spradlin (surviving wife, Alice of Jacksonville) and Tom Spradlin.
   Salty began his career in construction before becoming a long-time farmer in the Ashland area. Later in life he became an avid golfer, enjoying the game with numerous friends at the Virginia and Jacksonville Country Clubs.
   As per his wishes, cremation will be accorded. The family will conduct private services at a later date to celebrate the life of this hard-working fun-loving man. Salty will be deeply missed. June Veronica (Devine) Springer - (June 3, 1935 - December 9, 1978)
   June Veronica (Devine) Springer, 43, passed away at 6:40 a.m., Saturday, December 9, 1978, at her home in Orange Park, Florida, after a courageous three year battle with breast cancer surrounded by her brothers and sisters. She was born June 3, 1935 in Ashland, Illinois, the daughter of William Harry and Mary Isabelle (Kinney) Devine. She married Navy Ltjg. Donald F. Springer on January 18, 1958 in the Catholic Chapel, U.S. Naval Air Station, St. Louis, MO and they later divorced in February 1974.
   June lived in St. John's Hospital in Springfield from the age of two weeks until two years old and then in the Catholic Children's Home in Alton with her brothers and sisters after their mother's death in June 1935. She attended school in Alton until 1944 when the family moved to Virginia, IL. She attended school there until 1950, completing 9th grade at Virginia High School. June also attended Peoria Central High School and graduated from Caruthersville (Missouri) High School in 1953 and lettered in softball and basketball.
   She lived in Missouri, Kansas, Alaska, California, Pennsylvania, Taiwan, and Florida due to her husband's Navy career. She played softball, golf and bowled on women's leagues. June loved gardening, traveling, playing sports, dancing, volunteer work and most of all, spending time with her family and friends.
   Her survivors include her sons David and Sean, daughters Michele, Kerry, and Kellie, at home in Orange Park, Florida; sisters Mary (Kay) Devine Pack (husband, Billy), Caruthersville, Missouri, and Rose Devine Davis (husband, Conrad), Peoria, Illinois, brothers Benjamin Devine (wife, Viola), Deming, New Mexico, Frank Devine (wife, Frances), Coldspring, Texas, James Devine, Foley, Alabama, and William Devine (wife, Dorothy), Tucson, Arizona, 18 nieces and 7 nephews, cousins Eugene Devine, Iowa, Catherine and Bernadine Collins, Virginia, IL, Marguerite (Kinney) Schneider, Lawrence Kinney, John, Gerald, and James Schneider, South Dakota, Joan Lerch and Rita (Lerch) Lyons, Rock Island, IL, George Greuel, Rushville, IL, Helen (Daly) Lunden, Patrick, and John Daly, Chicago.
   She was preceded in death by her parents, brother Johnny Devine, grandparents Thomas and Mary (Ryan) Kinney and Patrick and Bridget (Daly) Devine, aunts Ellen (Devine) Kinney, Rose Anna Devine, Sarah (Ryan) Daly, uncles Frank Devine, Henry Devine, and Joseph Ryan, and cousins James Frank Collins, Jr., Rose (Kinney) Lerch, Harry Devine, Mildred (Devine) Stogsdill, and Raymond Greuel.
   Funeral services were held on Monday, December 11, 1978, 10 a.m. at St. Catherine's Catholic Church in Orange Park, Florida with Father Joseph James officiating. Interment at Walnut Ridge Cemetery in Virginia, Illinois.
