JAMES, Enoch - Ashland Sentinel, Ashland, Illinois, October 17, 1908, reprinted in The Cass County Historian, June 2000
The sudden death of Mr. Enoch James on October 12, as a result of being struck by a C & A passenger train during the noon hour last Monday was a great shock to the people of this community.
The accident occurred at the Elmore elevator crossing about 150 yards from the Union Station and about the same distance from the home of the deceased. Mr. James had just eaten dinner and was on is way to the business portion of the city when the accident occurred. When within twenty five yards of the railroad track he began running at the same time that the engine of the approaching train whistled about four blocks up the track although Mr. James nor the engineer could see each other from this point nor could at any point until he was but a few feet from the main track, as their view was obstructed by the elevator and by box cars standing on the track. Mr. James succeeded in getting over the last rail of the track but did not get far enough over to avoid being struck by the end of the bean on top of which projects over the side of the pilot, striking him with such force that he was thrown several feet into the air and about twenty five feet into the ditch.
Quite a number of people who were waiting for the train witnessed the accident. When the first ones reached his side he was unconscious and remained so until the end. He was at once taken to his home and physicians called, but he was beyond human aid and expired within about a half hour after the accident.
Funeral services were held at Bethel Church last Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock conducted by Rev. W.A. Boyd after which the remains were laid to rest in the cemetery adjoining.
Enoch James was born in Dennisville, Cape May County, New Jersey, February 23, 1821. There he grew to manhood and learned the trade of wagon maker and afterward a ship carpenter.
In 1849 he came to Sangamon County, Illinois. He married Marie Townsend granddaughter of Rev. John Townsend, December 21, 1852. Soon after their marriage they went to live on a farm near Pleasant Plains where they continued to reside until they moved to Ashland in 1895.
Five children were born to them, one of which died in childhood. The surviving children are Enoch of Pleasant Plains, Dr. Francis of Chelsa, Mass., Jennie of Ashland and Dr. Fred of Chicago. He was converted and joined the Bethel M.E. Church in 1868.
He loved nature and delighted in the growth of flowers and trees. He loved the birds and all Gods creatures who found him a friend and protector. He was public spirited and interested in the welfare of community and has left himself a lasting monument in the beautiful park in Ashland which he planted and cared for with his own hands. He had the courage of his convictions and stood firm for what he thought to be right.
He loved music and even after his fingers were stiffened with age, he delighted to play on the flute, the songs of Zion. Of him we believe it may be truly said he trusted in God and his end, though sudden was peaceful.
