Joe E. Harbison, 1937-2012
   Joe E. Harbison, 74, made his last voyage Monday, January 30,2012 at 1:37 a.m. from his home in Le Roy, II. He was born October 29,1937 in Chandlerville, II to Edward and Roberta Garner Harbison. He married Vicky J. Crabtree on August 17,1958 and they enjoyed 53 years together. To this union were born 3 children: Jeffrey E. Harbison, Mark F. Harbison (Carol) and Christine D. Anderson (Roger), all surviving. He was preceded in death by his brother, Gene and his parents.
   There are 7 grandchildren: Sarah E. Harbison, Jessica M. Harbison, Tayrn J. Harbison, Kayla D. Harbison, Matthew M. Harbison, Kaci A. Harbison, and Dylan E. Nelson.
   Also surviving is his sister in law: Ara Ann M. Harbison and 4 nieces and nephews: Ara Marie (Steve) Peterson, Sean (Dawn) Harbison, Shane (Nikki) Harbison, and Janeine Williams.
   He attended Western Illinois University, St. Francis Medical Technology, and Bradley University, U of I Pharmacy School. In 1971, he opened and operated Harbison Pharmacy in Le Roy until the closing of the store and in 1989 was employed at the U of I McKinley Health Center until retiring in 1999.
   He was a member of Masonic Lodge #221 in Le Roy, II. In his retirement he enjoyed woodcarving, and learned to fly radio controlled airplanes and built and sailed radio controlled sailboats, and loved traveling. He was a wonderful husband and father, a man of many interests and questions and wore many hats.
   A memorial service will be held at Hurley Funeral Home in Havana at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 4, 2012. Pastor Mary Louise Haxton will officiate. Memorial contributions may be made to the LeRoy Ambulance Service or to a charity of the donor's choice.

   Vicki Kay Harbison, 58, of Virginia, IL died Monday, February 6, 2012 at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield, IL.
   She was born November 5, 1953 in Beardstown, IL; the daughter of James "Jake" and Ruby Lorene Cox Olroyd. She married Brian Harbison on July 1, 1973 in Virginia, Il and he survives.
   She is also survived by her parents of Virginia; five children, Brian "Andy" Harbison II (fiancé, Samantha Buhl) of Virginia, Hidie Ham (fiance, Ruben Malaga) of Virginia, James "Jeb" Harbison (wife, Brandi) of Odenville, AL, and Adam Harbison and Shane Harbison, both of Virginia; seven grandchildren; a sister, Sue Noel (husband, James) of Ashland; a brother, Roger Olroyd (wife, Joy) of Beardstown; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a son, Adrian Dale Harbison; a granddaughter; and a niece.
   Mrs. Harbison was a graduate of Virginia High School and a homemaker. She was a member of Faith Baptist Church and enjoyed playing Bingo. She loved spending time with her grandchildren and her toy poodles.
   Cremation rites have been accorded. The family will conduct memorial services 2:00 PM, Saturday, February 11, 2012 at the Faith Baptist Church in Virginia and will meet friends following the services.    Barbara Hardwick - VIRGINIA, IL - Barbara Hardwick, 86, died Sunday, Aug. 3, 2014, at her home in Virginia.
   She was born March, 16, 1928, in Beardstown, the daughter of Melvin "Dolly" and Rebecca McNamara Gray. She married Walter Sam Hardwick on Nov. 11, 1947, in Beardstown and he preceded her in death on Oct. 30, 2009.
   Surviving are her children: Sally (husband Steve) Aggertt and Sam (wife, Jan) Hardwick, both of Ashland, Amy Hardwick of Palm Springs, Calif., and Molly Hardwick of Virginia; six grandchildren: Elizabeth Epping of Portland, Ore., Valerie Hardwick of Virginia, Rachel Rossi (husband, Josh) Doerfler of Riverton, Morgan Hardwick of Springfield, and Alexandra and Olivia Rossi, both of Springfield; and one great-granddaughter, Ryleigh Elizabeth Doerfler of Riverton.
   She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one brother, Tom Gray; and a granddaughter, Rebecca Hardwick.
   Barbara graduated from high school in Los Angeles, Calif. She then moved back to Beardstown and married Walter Sam Hardwick. She was a homemaker and later owned and operated Treasure's and Trinkets, an antique business, in Virginia for many years and was a local reporter for the Jacksonville Journal Courier for a short time. She was a member of Virginia United Methodist Church.
   Barbara was president of the Virginia Women's Club, served on the Virginia Barbeque Committee, was a Republican Precinct Committee Woman, and enjoyed being Mrs. Claus for the Virginia Parks District for many years. Barbara and her husband traveled the world together. She loved to entertain her family and friends, and was known to be quite the hostess. Barbara was a gourmet cook and was known for her sense of style. She enjoyed playing bridge and she did for over sixty years. Barbara greatest joy was being with her family and she was always the life of the party.
   Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Friday, Aug. 8, 2014, at Sager Funeral Home in Beardstown. Burial will be at the Beardstown City Cemetery. The family will meet friends from 6-8 p.m. on Thursday at the funeral home.

   Rebecca Elizabeth Hardwick, 23, of Ashland, passed away at 8:18 a.m. Thursday, April 10, 2014, at Memorial Medical Center.
   Rebecca was born Jan. 29, 1991, in Springfield, the daughter of Walter Sam and Janet Mary Grilec Hardwick.
   Rebecca was a graduate of Virginia High School and attended and graduated from the University of Spa and Cosmetology Arts. She was also a tech in the emergency room at Memorial Medical Center and was employed by Permanent Sunsation in Virginia. Rebecca was named the Virginia BBQ Queen and also awarded the title of most photogenic and Miss Congeniality. She enjoyed volleyball, hunting, painting, sketching, music, traveling, and being an artist. To her friends and family, Rebecca was a person who was always lively, loving, and enjoyed life. Her dearest friends held a special place within her heart. Her family meant the world to her.
   She was preceded in death by her grandfathers, Sam Hardwick and Emmett Grilec.
   She is survived by her parents, Jan and Sam Hardwick of Ashland; her siblings, Valerie Hardwick of Virginia and Morgan Hardwick of Springfield; her grandmothers, Barbara Hardwick of Virginia and Betty Grilec of Tinley Park; her beloved dogs, Annie, Angus, and Scoobie; and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
   Visitation: Family will receive friends from 4 until 7 p.m. on Monday at St. Luke Church, 240 E. Myrtle St., Virginia. Visitation will begin with a prayer service at 4 p.m.
   Funeral Mass: 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday at St. Luke Church with the Very Rev. Christopher J. Brey, V.F., celebrant. Burial will follow at Beardstown City Cemetery.

   Roscoe C. Hardwick, 86, of rural Arenzville died Friday, April 22, 2011, at Heritage Manor South in Beardstown. He was born February 15, 1925 in Wayne County, KY, the son of George and Emma Neely Hardwick. He married Nadine Lucille Gerard on September 1, 1945 in Fort Meyers, FL and she preceded him in death on July 27, 2008. They were happily married 62 years. Surviving is his son Larry (wife Diane) Hardwick of rural Arenzville; his daughter Linda (husband Robert) Moss of Omaha, NE; four grandchildren Stephannie (husband Troy) Johnson, Stacy Jo (husband Wesley) Ferrel, Dustin Hardwick, and Dana (husband Matt) Bangert; four great grandchildren Rachel and Rose Johnson, and Jacob and Ben Bangert; and his brother Maurice Hardwick of Quincy. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, one daughter Barbara Jean, four brothers Dewey, Hurstle, George, and Golie, and three sisters Pearl, Grace, and Lucy. Roscoe graduated from Meredosia High School and served in the US Army Air Corps during World War II as a tail gunner on a B-24 Bomber serving in North Africa and Italy. Following his military service he returned to farm in Cass and Morgan counties and he served as Meredosia Lake Drainage and Levee District Commissioner for over 40 years. He was a faithful member of First United Methodist Church in Beardstown and throughout his life he was a member of various organizations including Meredosia School Board and Cass County Zoning Board. He also served as an election judge for Hagener Township in Cass County. Roscoe was an avid hunter and enjoyed duck hunting in the Meredosia Lake bottoms. Funeral services will be held at 11 AM Monday, April 25, 2011, at Sager Funeral Home in Beardstown. Burial will be in the Beardstown City Cemetery. The family will meet with friends one hour prior to the funeral service on Monday at the funeral home. Walter Sam Hardwick Sr., 83, of Virginia, IL died Friday evening, October 30, 2009 at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield, IL.
   He was born July 22, 1926 in Poplar Bluff, MO; the son of Walter Sam Hardwick and Louise Knott Hardwick (Lord). He married Barbara J. Gray on November 16, 1947 in Beardstown, IL and she survives.
   He is also survived by four children, Sally Hardwick Adams (husband, Don) of Springfield, Sam Hardwick Jr. (wife, Jan) of rural Ashland, Amy Hardwick of Virginia, and Molly Hardwick of Jacksonville; seven grandchildren, Elizabeth Sunseri (husband, John) of Portland, OR, Valerie Hardwick of Springfield, Morgan Hardwick of Virginia, Rachel Rossi of Springfield, Alexandra Rossi of Jacksonville, Rebecca Hardwick of Ashland, and Olivia Rossi of Jacksonville; a niece; and two nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Mary Louise Stufflebeam; and a niece.
   Mr. Hardwick was a graduate of Beardstown High School and attended the University of Illinois at Champaign. Following his service with the US Army Air Corps during WW II, he returned to Cass County to build a successful farming operation in the Philadelphia township area. He appreciated nature, enjoyed working outdoors and was devoted to protecting the land through conservation practices. An active arborist, he planted hundreds of walnut trees on his farms for the benefit of others. He was a co-founder of the Cass County Rural Water District. While farming, he also worked with insurance companies as a crop hail adjuster. After his farming career, he began a 20 year career working in various capacities with Cass Communications Management of Virginia. He provided marketing services especially in the area of cable TV franchise acquisitions.
   Sam was a member of the Virginia United Methodist Church, Virginia Lodge #544 AF & AM, and a former member of the Virginia Kiwanis Club. An avid reader, he was rarely seen without a book determined to continue his lifelong passion for learning. His hobby led him to serve several years as president of the Virginia Memorial Public Library board. His quest for learning also led him to travel the world extensively all the while relating the foreign visits with his interest in history. It was equally important that he share this love of history and travel with Barbara, his wife of 62 years, his children, and his grandchildren. He valued time spent with his family and they will greatly miss him.
   Funeral services will be held 10:00 AM Wednesday, November 4, 2009 at the Buchanan & Cody Funeral Home in Virginia with burial and military rites at Beardstown City Cemetery. Todd F. Harmeyer, November 13, 1961 - January 16, 2012
   Todd F. Harmeyer, 50, of Beardstown, died Monday, Jan. 16, at his home.
   He was born Nov. 13, 1961 in Baraboo, Wisc., the son of Fred and Nancie (Grosinske) Harmeyer. He married Shelly Meyer on Nov. 11, 2003 in Beardstown.
   Surviving is his wife Shelly Harmeyer of Beardstown; his father Fred (wife Gail) Harmeyer, of Hot Springs, AR; his mother Nancie (husband Bob) Walters, of Beardstown; his daughter Amelia Harmeyer and step-son Chris Yost both of Beardstown, one step-brother Joe (wife Ricki) Walters of St. Peters, Mo., one uncle and several aunts, cousins, nieces and nephews.
   He was preceded in death by his grandparents Frank and Louise Harmeyer and Ted and Edna Grosinske.
   Todd graduated from Beardstown High School in the class of 1980. He was baptized into the Methodist faith. He was a member of B.P.O. Elks Lodge #1007, Cass Lodge #23 A.F.&A.M. and Gutherie-Pierce VFW Post #1239 Men's Auxillary all in Beardstown and was a former member of the Beardstown School Board where he served as president. He was currently serving as a member of Cass County Board and as Director of Public Works for the City of Beardstown for 23 years. Todd had an enthusiastic passion for the youth of Beardstown and was actively involved in many sports programs. He earnestly loved his family, his many friends, and his hometown of Beardstown.
   Memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, January 21, at the First United Methodist Church in Beardstown. Following the memorial service a Celebration of Life will be held at the Elks Lodge in Beardstown. Masonic rites will be presented by Cass Lodge #23 A.F.&A.M. at 7 p.m. Thursday, January 19, at Sager Funeral Home in Beardstown.

   Kathryn "Kathy" A. Harmon, 66, of Springfield and formerly of Beardstown died Monday, October 17, 2011, at St. John's Hospital in Springfield. She was born April 20, 1945 in Beardstown, the daughter of Andy and Wilma Keltner Harmon. Surviving is her sister Evelyn Lee of Washington, IL and several nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, and great great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents. Kathy graduated from Beardstown High School in 1963 and was employed with the Illinois Secretary of State until her retirement in 2002. She was a faithful and devoted member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Springfield and she also enjoyed volunteering her time at St. John's Hospital Gift Shop. Funeral services will be held at 11:30 AM Saturday, October 22, 2011, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Springfield. The family will meet with friends from 10 AM Saturday until the time of the service at the church. Graveside services will be held at 2 PM Saturday at Beardstown City Cemetery.    Richard B. Harmon, 82, of Beardstown, died Friday morning, Dec. 1, 2006, at Heritage Manor South in Beardstown.
   He was born Feb. 27, 1924, in Quincy, the son of Joseph and Francis Ellen Kitts Close Harmon.
   He is survived by two daughters, Launi (husband, Donald) Klitz of Rushville and Janie Harmon and Janie Harmon of Chilhowee, Mo.; three grandchildren. Craig Klitz, Kerri Himpsl and Kimberly Bartlett; six great-grandchildren; one brother; John Kennedy Harmon of Bonners Ferry, Idaho; and two sisters, Becky Harmon of Detroit, Mich., and Rachel Hudson of Jacksonville, Fla.
   Mr. Harmon attended Quincy Notre Dame High School and then entered the U.S. Marine Corps where he served in World War II and Korean Conflict. He served 12 years as Chief of Police in Beardstown and retired after 18 years as Fire Chief in Beardstown. He then was employed for five years as a security guard with National Starch in Meredosia. He was grand marshall in the 25th anniversary parade of the Beardstown Fall Fun Festival.
   Graveside services will be held 11 a.m. Monday at Astoria Cemetery. The family will meet friends from 4-6 p.m. Sunday at Sager Funeral Home in Beardstown.    Betty Jo Harms, 83, of Ashland, IL died Friday, February 6, 2009 at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield, IL.
   She was born December 2, 1925 in Springfield; the daughter of Chester Albert and Marguerite Ellen Belcher Patton. She married Walter E. Harms on October 6, 1946 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Farmingdale, IL and he preceded in death on June 9, 2007.
   She is survived by a daughter, Janice Montgomery (husband, Jim) of Pleasant Plains; five grandchildren, Shelly Montgomery of Altamont, Meta Jo Floyd (husband, Bruce) of Butler, Chad Shannon (wife, Erica) of Ashland, James Montgomery (wife, Sandy) of Virden, and Remington Montgomery of Pleasant Plains; seven great grandsons; a great granddaughter; a sister, Virginia Lee Spratt (husband, Donald) of Springfield; and several nieces and nephews.
   A graduate of Springfield High School, Mrs. Harms was a homemaker and assisted her husband with the farm. She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church of Pleasant Plains, Zion Ladies Guild, and Ashland Women's Club. She enjoyed crocheting, gardening, and cooking.
   Funeral services will be held 10:00 AM Tuesday, February 10, 2009 at Zion Lutheran Church in Pleasant Plains with burial in Pleasant Plains Cemetery.    Walter E. Harms, 84, of Ashland, died Saturday morning, June 9, 2007, at his residence.
   He was born March 30, 1923, in Pleasant Plains, the son of John Edwin and Meta Harms Harms. He married Betty Jo Patton on Oct. 6, 1946, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Farmingdale, and she survives.
   He is also survived by one daughter, Janice (husband, Jim) Montgomery of Pleasant Plains; five grandchildren, Shelly Montgomery of Altamont, Meta Jo (husband, Bruce) Floyd of Butler, Chad (wife Erica) Shannon of Ashland, James (wife, Sandy) Montgomery of Virden and Remington Montgomery of Springfield; seven great-grandsons; three sisters, Frieda (husband, Albert) Trimble of Alexander, Esther (husband, Ed) Riedweg of Bloomington, Ind., and Ruth Dautenhahn of Rochester; and several nieces and nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by one brother, Jacob (surviving wife, Onita of Pleasant Plains); and one sister, Clara Schmidt.
   Mr. Harms was a 1942 graduate of Pleasant Plains High School and a lifelong farmer in Sangamon County. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Pleasant Plains and the Sangamon County Farm Bureau. He enjoyed building and flying model airplanes.
   Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Tuesday at Zion Lutheran Church in Pleasant Plains, with burial at Pleasant Plains Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Monday at the church. Rozella Dodds Harre, 1917-2003, Beardstown
   Rozella Dodds Harre, 86, of Beardstown, died Saturday evening, Nov. 1, 2003, at Heritage Manor South in Beardstown.
   She was born March 14, 1917, in Lomax, the daughter of Theo and Lottie Jolly Eckhardt. She married Arthur Rebman in 1935, and he preceded her in death in 1945. She then married Fred Dodds in 1946, and he preceded her in death in 1983. She later married Carl Glen Harre in 1989, and he preceded her in death in 1997.
   She is survived by three sons, Ted (wife, Kay) Dodds of Frederick, Darwin (wife, Donna) Dodds of Rushville, and Russell Dodds of St. Petersburg, Fla.; three daughters, Norma Jean (husband, Jim) Burgett and Nancy Jo Trone, both of Beardstown, and Linda (husband, Danny) McDougal of South Fulton, Tenn.; three step-daughters, Betty (husband, Thomas) Loughary of Beardstown, Nancee (husband, Robert) Bales of Eldon, Mo., and Kay Ann Surratt of Beardstown; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren; three brothers, Wilbur (wife, Ann) Morrow of Beardstown, George Lewis Eckhardt of of Oklahoma, and Donald Eckhardt of California; and two sisters, Mary (husband, Edward) Wilford of Florida and Lottie (husband, Joe) Mendez of Arizona. She was preceded in death by one son, Jackson L. Rebman; one step-daughter, Charlotte Harre; six grandchildren, Jason Dodds, Holly Kay Dodds, Russell Dodds Jr., Lorrie Trone, Alaina Tippey and Sandy Burgett Benker; two brothers, Thomas Morrow and Gerald Morrow; and one sister, Virginia Schall.
   Mrs. Harre attended school in Beardstown. She was formerly employed for 25 years with Wells Lamont Glove Factory, four years at Illinois Glove Factory in Beardstown, and for 20 years she was a mussel-shell buyer for the Tennessee Shell Company based in Camden, Tenn. Mrs. Harre enjoyed going to coffee and playing cards with her girlfriends and she loved traveling to Kansas to visit friends. She truly cherished her family and the memories she shared with them.
   Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Tuesday at Sager Funeral Home in Beardstown, with burial at the Messerer Cemetery near Frederick. Friends may call after 4 p.m. Monday, with the family meeting friends from 5-7 p.m. at the funeral home.    Howard J. Harrell, 95, of Jacksonville, died Tuesday, March 18, 2008, at Jacksonville Convalesent Center.
   He was born Feb. 28, 1913, in Beardstown, the son of John Sherman Sr. and Rebecca Haines Harrell. He married Alberta Mae Cox on June 19, 1935, in Virginia, and she preceded him in death July 19, 1954. He later married Sarah Jane Noe on April 14, 1956, in Morristown, Tenn., and she survives.
   He is also survived by two daughters, Nancy (husband, Reginald) Carls and Mary (husband, Ronald) Lotz, both of Jacksonville; one son, James (wife, Rebecca) of Rio; eight grandchildren, Jenna Carls of Chicago, Amy and Sarah Jane Carls and Jessica and Jared Lotz, all of Jacksonville, and James Jesse, Jennifer and Kelly Harrell, all of Rio; one brother, William (wife, Darlene) of Merritt; and three sisters, Louise Tribble of Jacksonville, Gladys Miller of Lowell, Ind., and Minnie Frye of Chesterson, Ind. He was preceded in death by one son in infancy, Kenneth Eugene; six brothers, Clyde and Owen Hearold, Rollie, Chalmer and John S. Harrell Jr. and Ray Harrell in infancy; six sisters, Goldie Chaney, Fae Stubblefield, Gloria Wallace, Esther Cox, Marie Bohler and Kay Hart.
   Mr. Harrell had been a farmhand, and also had worked for R.D. Lawrence Construction Co., and had been a member of AFL-CIO for 25 years, out of the Jacksonville Local Labor Union. He also worked for Illinois School for the Visually Impaired in Jacksonville as a security guard for 27 years. He was a member of Jacksonville Assembly of God Church. He will be remembered as a man who was not afraid of hard work. His favorite pastime was spending time with family and friends whom he loved very much.

   Sarah J. Noe Harrell, 89, of Jacksonville, Illinois, died Thursday morning April 26, 2012, at Jacksonville Skilled Nursing & Rehab.
   She was born June 4, 1922, in Morristown, Tennessee, the daughter of George W. and Mary Harriet (Dollie) Noe. She married Howard J. Harrell April 14, 1956, in Morristown, Tennessee and he preceded her in death March 18, 2008.
   Sarah is survived by two daughters Nancy (husband Reginald) Carls and Mary (husband, Ronald) Lotz, both of Jacksonville; one son, James (wife, Rebecca) of Rio; eight grandchildren, Jenna Carls of Chicago, Sarah Jane Carls of St. Louis, Missouri, Jessica Lotz of Oak Park, Illinois, Amy Carls and Jared Lotz of Jacksonville, and James Jesse, Jennifer and Kelly Harrell all of Rio; one sister, Mary Mitchell of Charleston, South Carolina and sister-in-law Omega Noe of Morristown, Tennessee. She was preceded in death by six sisters, Helen Christine, Grace Elena, Valentine Noe in infancy, Laura Catron, Carrie Childers, and Anna May Linkious; eight brothers, Clarence, Charles and Arthur Crum Noe in infancy and Hubert Bruce, Frank, Harold, George and James Jacob Noe.
   Mrs. Harrell worked as a bookkeeper in Morristown, Tennessee before moving to Illinois with her husband. Sarah ran a day care in her home on Routt Street for over 30 years, and she and her husband were also foster parents for the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services for a number of years. She was known to many as "Mama Sarah". She was a member and Sunday school teacher at Assembly of God Church in Jacksonville, Illinois and also Macedonia Baptist Church in Morristown, Tennessee.
   She will be remembered as caring for hundreds of children during her lifetime and a devoted caregiver to her husband who suffered from Alzheimer’s for many years. Her faith in God and service to her church was commendable. She was an amazing cook and enjoyed spending time with family and friends whom she loved very much.
   Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Jacksonville Assembly of God, with burial at Walnut Ridge Cemetery in Virginia, IL. The family will meet friends 5-7 p.m. Monday at Buchanan & Cody Funeral Home in Jacksonville, IL. A memorial service will be held at Macedonia Baptist Church in Morristown, Tennessee at a later date.    David W. Harris, 57, of Ashland, IL died Tuesday, August 2, 2011 as a result of injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident in Springfield, IL.
   He was born September 15, 1953 in Springfield; the son of Earnest and Mildred Isley Harris.
   He is survived by his mother of Ashland; two sons, Jason Harris of Carbondale and Aaron Harris (wife, Natalie) of Alexander; a daughter, Chelsea Harris of Springfield; five grandchildren, Austin, Kyle, Jozalyn, Zoe, and Challas; three brothers, Paul Harris (wife, Marjorie) of Ashland, Charles Harris (wife, Jeannie) of Alexander, and Steven Harris of Ashland; a sister, Betty Griffin (husband, Charles) of Ashland; his former wife, Victoria Harris Naill of Yuma, AZ; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his father.
   Mr. Harris was a 1972 graduate of Ashland High School and served with the US Marine Corps from 1973 to 1976. He was employed for over 30 years with the Norfolk and Southern Railroad. An avid Harley rider, he was a member of A.B.A.T.E. . He enjoyed dancing, singing, and socializing with friends.

   Dorothy Anne Harris, 87, of Beardstown died Thursday, March 27, 2008, at 1:14 a.m. at St. John's Hospice.
Born in Beardstown on Oct. 6, 1920, she was the daughter of the late Claude and Anna Goff Davis. She married John R. "Jack" Harris in Beardstown on Oct. 21, 1938, and he preceded her in death.
   Surviving are four daughters, Judy (husband, Hermann) Rupprecht of Springfield, Mary (husband, Mike) Wessel, Teresa Matthews and Diane (loving companion, Bob Landes) Feigl, all of Beardstown; five sons, Jim Harris of Springfield, Steve Harris of Lafayette, La., Daniel (wife, Joy) Harris and Tim (loving companion, Judy Fishel) Harris, both of Beardstown, and Mike (loving companion, Renee Hardwick) Harris of Springfield. There are 28 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild surviving.
   She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; three sons, John Robert "Jack" Harris Jr., Francis Patrick "Pat" Harris and Robert Kevin "Bobby" Harris; a sister, Mary Anne Green; and a brother, Francis Davis.
   Mrs. Harris was a member of St. Alexius Catholic Church in Beardstown and the "Red Hat" Club. She had worked many years as a legal secretary for attorney R.L. Northcutt and later attorney John Knuppel.
   Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday, March 30, 2008, at Sager Funeral Home in Beardstown. Rosary service will be at 5 p.m. that day. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Alexius Catholic Church in Beardstown at 10 a.m. Monday, March 31, 2008. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

   John Donald Harris, 59, of Springfield died Thursday, May 29, 2014, at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield. John was born on December 25, 1954, in Springfield, the son of Carol Eugene and Mildred Moncrief Harris.
   John was an over-the-road truck driver, worked for Donley trucking and worked in construction.
   He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, James Earl Harris.
    He is survived by two sons, John (Tori) Harris of Woodville, Texas, and Josh Harris of Springfield; a daughter, Carrie Harris of Williamsville; four sisters, Rose Marie Harris Branner of Jacksonville, Judith Elaine Harris of Virginia, Patricia Ann Rotella of Naples and Helen Elizabeth Coates of Virginia; and several grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.

John Robert "Jack" Harris Jr., 64, of Beardstown, died early Tuesday morning, May 24, 2005, at Culbertson Memorial Hospital in Rushville.
   He was born June 7, 1940, in Beardstown, the son of John Robert Sr. and Dorothy Davis Harris. He married Edith McDougall on July 24, 1958, in Petersburg, and she survives.
   He is also survived by his mother of Beardstown; two sons, Donnie (wife, Bonnie) of Beardstown and Scott (wife, Barb) of Browning; three daughters, Anna (husband, Steve) Chisholm and Jeannie (companion, Rod Anderson) Harris, both of Beardstown, and Lisa (husband, Dale) Swingle of Arenzville; seven grandchildren; one great-grandchild; five brothers, James and Mike, both of Springfield, and Steve, Tim and Danny, all of Beardstown; and four sisters, Judy Hood of Chicago and Mary Wessel, Teresa Harris and Diane Feigl, all of Beardstown. He was preceded in death by one son, Tommy, in infancy; and two brothers.
   Mr. Harris was a superintendent for McDougall Hartman Construction Co. in Peoria for seven years at which time he transferred to the Jacksonville Local 253, where he retired. He was a member of Labor Local 165, in Peoria, Labor Local 253 in Jacksonville and enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening. He was a life-long Democrat.
   Cremation rites have been accorded. Graveside services will be held 10 a.m. Saturday at Beardstown City Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2-8 p.m. Friday at his residence, 9003 Star Lane in Beardstown. Hurley Funeral Home in Petersburg is in charge of arrangements.

   Marlene A. Harris, 72, of Virginia, died Thursday, June 5, 2008, at her residence.
   She was born June 26, 1935 in Virginia, the daughter of Ivan and Mamie Hudson Bateman. She married Vernon "Bernie"Harris on August 1. 1954 and he survives.
   She is also survived by two sons, Richard Harris (fiance', Buffy Kearns) of Virginia and Ron Harris of Virginia; two grandchildren, Michael Harris (wife, Nichole) of Jacksonville and Kasey Kearns of Virginia; a sister, Dottie Stiles of Beardstown; and several nieces and nephews.
   She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Gene, Robert "Bob", and William "Billie" Bateman; and a sister, Helen Duckwiler Toland.
   Mrs. Harris was a graduate of Virginia High School and employed by the Illinois School for the Deaf in Jacksonville from September of 1968 when she served as a dorm parent until retirement in June of 2000 as a teacher's aide. She enjoyed watching St. Louis Cardinal baseball games and playing slot machines on riverboat casinos.

Martha, widow of Joseph Harris, died May 21 at the residence of her daughter, Mrs. J.S. Nicholsin of here. She had been ill eleven days. Her husband died in 1856. She was born in Cornwall, England, Sept. 19, 1801and united with the Wesleyan movement there. Her family of six came to America in 1837 and she has resided near here thirty one years. Death was due to pneumonia. Her son, Rev. Joseph of Mt. Vernon came for the service. Burial in Grigg cemetery.

Mary Margaret Hendricker Harris 1952-2002 BEARDSTOWN
   Mary Margaret Hendricker Harris, 49, of Kaw City, Okla., and formerly of Beardstown, died Wednesday morning, Feb. 13 2002, at Shawn Manor Nursing Home in Ponca City, Okla., of natural causes.
   She was born Aug. 26, 1952, in Beardstown, the daughter of Orville Theodore and Mary Tucker Hendricker. She married Donald Ray Harris June 12, 1976, at First Baptist Church in Doniphan, Mo., and he survives in Kaw City.
   She is also survived by her parents, of Clifton Hill, Mo.; three sisters, Hazel Gibson of Greeley, Colo., Fern Bess. of St Louis, and Lois Shirk of Vienna, Mo.; two brothers, Dale Hendricker of Clifton Hill, and Elmer Hendricker of Fulton, Mo.
   Mrs. Harris graduated from Western High School in Huntsville, Mo., in the class of 1970. She attended Hannibal-LaGrange College in Hannibal, Mo., and graduated from William Jewell College in Uberty, Mo., in 1974, where she majored in Physical Education and Health and lettered in several varsity sports. She was a teacher for the Doniphan R-1 School District in Doniphan, Mo., and later enjoyed her work in the food service industry serving as an inspector for USDA FSIS. She also enjoyed working with her husband in their automotive and livestock businesses.
   Mrs. Harris lived in Doniphan, Mo., until 1981 and moved to Clifton Hill, Mo. In 1996, she moved to Prescott, Ariz., and then moved to Lincoln, Ariz., in 2000. In 2001 she moved to the Ponca City, Okla., area living in Blackwell and then settling into her home in Kaw City ncar Kaw Lake. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Clifton Hill, and always enjoyed sports, outdoor activities and spending time with her family. She loved animals, science fiction and music. She liked playing piano, guitar and singing gospel music.
   Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Monday at Hendricker Funeral Home in Mount Sterling with burial at Beardstown City Cemetery. Visitation will be from noon until time of services Monday. Memorials are suggested to the Hospice of Ponca City, Okla or to the American Red Cross.

Phebe, wife of John Harris died here the 10th. She was born in St. Clair Co., Illinois. She was married June 13, 1860. Her mother Mrs. Padon of Carlinville arrived too late before she died. Burial was in the family burial ground in Sangamon Bottoms. She leaves her husband and five small children.

   Vernon D. "Bernie" Harris, 86, of Virginia, died Saturday, Nov. 26, 2016, at St. John's Hospital in Springfield.
   He was born Jan. 26, 1930, in Little Indian, the son of Richard P. and Verna Mallicoat Harris. He married Marlene A. Bateman on Aug. 1, 1954, and she preceded him in death on June 5, 2008.
   He is survived by two sons, Richard D. (wife, Buffy) Harris of Virginia, and Ron Harris, of Virginia; three grandchildren, Michael R.D. (wife, Nicole) Harris of Jacksonville, Jonathon Harris Mitchell of Carlinville and Kasey Harris of Virginia; one great grandson, Easton Michael Harris; and several nieces and nephews.
   Mr. Harris was a carpenter, and had also worked at Oscar Meyer. He was a Sergeant in the U.S. Army, serving in the Korean War. Bernie enjoyed fishing, hunting, and playing slot machines on riverboat casinos.

   Phyllis L. Harrison, 81, of Virginia, IL died Thursday, September 20, 2012 at her residence
   She was born February 28, 1931 in Virginia; the daughter of Alfred and Dorothy Roberts Harrison.
   She is survived by three brothers, Alfred Robert "Bob" Harrison of Virginia, William "Bill" Harrison (wife, Wanda) of Virginia, and James "Jim" Harrison of Bushnell and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
   She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Theodore "Ted" Harrison (surviving wife, Margaretta "Gretta" of Quincy) and Lawrence "Larry" Harrison (surviving wife, Dorothy "Doady" of St. Louis, MO); and two sisters-in-law, Jean Harrison and Marilyn Harrison.
   A 1949 graduate of Virginia High School, Phyllis was employed as a computer operator and supervisor for the State Journal-Register and Copley Computer Services of Springfield and later as a bookkeeper for Harrison Oil Company in Virginia. She was a member of the Virginia United Methodist Church where she was a former financial secretary, trustee, and memorial chairperson for 25 years. She also delivered Bread of Love meals for the church. She served on the board of trustees of Virginia Memorial Public Library for twelve years as well as serving as their memorial chairperson. She was also a former member of the Walnut Grove Household Science Club.
   Cremation rites will be accorded. Memorial services will be held 2:00 pm Saturday, September 29, 2012, at the Virginia United Methodist Church in Virginia with the Rev. William Braswell officiating. The family will meet friends at the church from 1:00 pm Saturday until the time of services.    Theodore "Ted" Harrison, 77, of Quincy, and formerly of Virginia, died Tuesday, Nov. 20, 2007, at Barnes Jewish Hospital in St. Louis.
He was born Dec. 10, 1929, in Virginia, the son of Alfred H. and Dorothy Roberts Harrison. He married B. Margaretta "Greta" Mallicoat on Dec. 28, 1951, in rural Jacksonville, and she survives.
He is also survived by one son, Mark Franklin (wife, Robin) Yarbrough) of Quincy; one daughter, Lori Sue (husband, Barry) Beerman of the Netherlands; two grandchildren, Tabitha and Raven of Quincy; one sister, Phyllis of Virginia; three brothers, Robert "Bob" (wife, Jean) and William "Bill" (wife, Wanda), both of Virginia, and James "Jim" (wife, Marilyn) of Bushnell; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one brother, Larry (surviving wife, Dorothy of St. Louis).
Mr. Harrison was a 1947 graduate of Virginia High School and served with the U.S. Army from 1951-1954 during the Korean Conflict. He owned and operated Harrison Oil Company in Virginia for 50 years and was affiliated with the Phillips 66 Oil Company for over 55 years. Since 1976, he has also owned and operated the Roller Country skating rink in Quincy. He was a member of the Virginia United Methodist Church where he formerly served on the Building Committee, Trustees and United Methodist Men. He attended the Melrose Chapel United Methodist Church in Quincy where he was also a former trustee. He was formerly active with the Virginia Kiwanis Club, Virginia Youth Baseball, Passavant Area Hospital Board of Directors and Illinois Petroleum Marketers Association. He was a member of the Roller Skating Association, served on the Ellington Township Board and was a faithful St. Louis Cardinals fan.
   Cremation rites have been accorded. Memorial services will be held 11 a.m. Monday at Virginia United Methodist Church, with burial at Arcadia Cemetery, north of Jacksonville, where military rites will be conducted. The family will meet friends one hour prior to services Monday at the church.    William F. "Bill" Harrison, 85, of Virginia, IL died Monday, October 14, 2013, at the Walker Nursing Home in Virginia.
   He was born September 13, 1928 in Virginia, the son of Alfred H. and Dorothy A. Roberts Harrison. He married Wanda Freitag on June 12, 1955 in Jacksonville, IL and she survives.
   He is also survived by a daughter, Frances Ann "Francie" Morgensen (husband, Larry) of East Moline; two sons, John William Harrison (wife, Abby) of Goodrich, MI and Philip James Harrison (wife, Pamela) of Jacksonville; four grandsons, Greg Morgensen of Iowa City, IA, Garrett Morgensen of East Moline, and Luke and Matt Harrison, both of Goodrich, MI; two brothers, Bob Harrison of Virginia and Jim Harrison of Bushnell; and several nieces and nephews.
   He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Ted Harrison (surviving wife, Gretta of Quincy) and Larry Harrison (surviving wife, Doady of St. Louis, MO); a sister, Phyllis Harrison; and two sisters-in-law, Jean and Marilyn Harrison.
   A 1946 graduate of Virginia High School, Mr. Harrison served with the US Army Air Corps from 1946-1949 and with the Reserves until 1953. He returned to the Virginia area to embark on a farming career in 1955. Bill was among the first in the Virginia area to introduce the practice of no-till farming. In addition, he served as a Dekalb Seed Corn dealer for over 30 years. He retired in 1993 from his Cass County grain and livestock operation.
   Bill was a member of the Virginia United Methodist Church and the Virginia American Legion Post. He formerly provided volunteer service as a member of the Virginia School Board and with the Bread of Love program.
   Funeral services will be held 11:00 am Saturday, October 19, 2013, at the Virginia United Methodist Church in Virginia with burial and military honors at Walnut Ridge Cemetery in Virginia.    Doris Betty (Hagerty) Hartman age 91 of Beardstown, died at 5:00 P.M. Saturday February 5, 2011 at Heritage Manor South in Beardstown. She was born December 20, 1919 in Beardstown, the daughter of Silas David and Mary Ann (Lynch) Hagerty. She married John Robert Hartman, Sept. 30, 1940 in Keokuk, Iowa and they celebrated 62 years of marriage. He preceded her in death on Feb. 12, 2003. She is survived by many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. Preceding her in death was her husband John; parents; five sisters: Irva Farrar, Myrtle Wolfe, Fanny Seward, Grethel Kiser and Faith Hymes; six brothers (two in infancy, Baby Boy Hagerty and Silas David Hagerty, Jr.): Paul, Alfred, William and Richard. She was the last sibling in her family. Doris graduated from the Beardstown High School in the Class of 1939. She was a devoted wife to John and a nurturer and encourager to her nieces and nephews and all her family. She was a great and trustworthy friend to all. She was an avid reader, loved to travel and play cards. For over 20 years she and her husband held a ham and cabbage dinner on New Year's Day for their friends and family. Doris was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Beardstown where she taught Sunday School and was a member of Circle 6. She was a leader in Explorer's Bible Study for many years. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, February 9, 2001 at the First United Methodist Church in Beardstown, with visitation one hour prior to the services. John R. Hartman - 1914-2003 - Beardstown
   John R. Hartman, 88, of Beardstown died Wednesday morning, Feb. 12, 2003, at Culbertson Memorial Hospital in Rushville.
   He was born Dec. 7, 1914, in Chandlerville, the son of Charles C. and Bertha Force Hartman. He married Dorris B. Hagerty Sept. 3, 1940, in Keokuk, Iowa, and she survives in Beardstown.
   He is also survived by several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Harry, Samuel (surviving wife, Virginia Hartman of Jacksonville) and William.
   Mr. Hartman attended school in Naples. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Men in Beardstown. He was employed with Burlington-Northern Railroad in Beardstown and was a member of the United Transportation Union for 30 years, retiring in 1974. Mr. Hartman enjoyed gardening and grooming his yard. He especially enjoyed traveling with his wife after his retirement. He was very proud that he and his wife had celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary.
   Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at First United Methodist Church in Beardstown, with burial at Beardstown City Cemetery. Friends may call after 4 p.m. Friday at Sager Funeral Home in Beardstown with family meeting friends from 6-8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Friends may also call one hour prior to the services at the church. Memorials are suggested to First United Methodist Church in Beardstown.

Francis Eugene Hartwick, May 13, 1929-November 1, 2010
   Francis Eugene Hartwick, 81, of Beardstown and formerly of Carrollton, died Monday, November 1, at St. John's Hospital in Springfield.
he was born May 13, 1929 in Kane Township in Greene County, the son of Clement and Ada Frances Young Hartwick. He married Sophia Jayne Price in 1950 and she preceded him in death in 1972. He then married Evelyn L. Spoon Meadows on June 24, 1973 in Jacksonville.
   Surviving is his wife Evelyn Hartwick of Beardstown; six children Rita Jayne Daulton of Peoria, Christopher (wife Sherri) Meadows of Quincy, Lance (wife Becky) Meadows of Normal, Christopher Dane (wife Tonia) Hartwick of Jacksonville, Damon (wife Tamara) Meadows of Waterloo, Iowa, and Chad Hartwick of Springfield; 11 grandchildren Lucas Daulton, Ashley (husband, Steve) Hynek, Natalie, Hayley, Hunter, Parker and Cassel Meadows, Heather, Michael and Nick Hartwick, and Theodore Gruenwald; two great grandchildren Vincent and Brianna; and three sisters Doris Weber of Jacksonville, Virginia (husband Deneen) Weber of Rockbridge, and Martha (husband Wayne) Sibley of Greenfield.
   He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, and his brother Paul Hartwick (surviving wife Jeanette Gilbert of Carrollton).
   Mr. Hartwick graduated from Carrollton High School and served in the US Army during the Korean War. He farmed in Greene County and retired while working in Durable Medical Equipment Field. He attended Bethel Community Church of the Nazarene in Arenzville. Francis was known to be a Godly man and truly enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.
   Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, November 5, at Beardstown City Cemetery.

Mark Hartung, 1952-2007, Beardstown
   Mark V. Hartung, 54, of Avon, Ind., and formerly of Beardstown, died Wednesday, Feb. 14, 2007, in Louisville, Ky.
   He was born Oct. 5, 1952, in Darby, Pa., the son of Peter H. and Jeanne Fitzmaurice Hartung.
   He is survived by his father, Peter H. (wife, Elizabeth) of Springfield; three sisters, Suzanne Hartung of Davenport, Iowa, Judy (husband, Charlie) Hance of Beardstown and Pam (husband, Bob) Gunderson of Redmond, Wash.; one brother, Ron (wife, Ruth) of Tallahassee, Fla.; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother.
   Mr. Hartung attended elementary and junior high schools in Davenport, Iowa, and graduated from Beardstown High School. He later went on to graduate from Millikin University in 1974. He worked as a manager for Dairy Queen for 27 years, mostly in Indiana. At family get-togethers, the children always knew he would keep them laughing and that he would probably take them to Dairy Queen before the end of the day was over.
   Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Monday at St. Alexius Catholic Church in Beardstown, with burial at a later date at St. Alexius Catholic Cemetery in Beardstown. The family will meet with friends one hour prior to services Monday at the church. Sager Funeral Home in Beardstown is in charge of arrangements. Harold Hassman
   Harold Hassman, 70, Virginia, died Saturday at Beardstown Hospital.
   Mr. Hassman was born in Cass County August 17, 1908, son of Henry and Helga Taapken Hassman. He married Helen Riley, and she survives.
   Also surviving are two children, Mrs. Gary (Ellen) Reischer, Colchester, and Mildred Edwards, Olivette, Missouri; a sister, Louis Fredericks, Petersburg; and three granchildren.
   Survices were 2 p.m. Tuesday at Massie Funeral Home in Virginia. Burial was in Walnut Ridge Cemetery.
Note: Harold's sister's name was spelled Louis in the obituary, probably an error.

HAVEKLUFT, C.H.C. - Beardstown Central Illinoian, Oct. 28, 1869
Died at his residence here Fri., C.H.C. Havekluft. He had been ill since the previous Sun. Death was due to an appolictic fit. He was an old resident and served in the Mexican War.

Donald L. Hazelrigg, 1935-2003, Jacksonville
   Donald L. Hazelrigg, 67, of Jacksonville, died Monday July 21, 2003, at his residence.
   He was born Sept. 9, 1935, in Jacksonville, the son of Roy M. and Betty Hildreth Hazelrigg. He married Glenda Davis on Dec. 16, 1961, in Decatur.
   He is survived by one son, Dr. Stephen R. (wife, Shari) of Springfield; three daughters, Toni (husband, Eric) Niepagen, Martha (husband, Craig) Colwell and Amy (husband, Scott) Plangger, all of Bloomington; nine grandchildren, Andy, Lindsey and Matthew Hazelrigg, Alex and Abigail Niepagen, Luke and Jack Colwell, and Jake and Olivia Plangger. He was preceded in death by one brother, Rex.
   Mr. Hazelrigg was a 1953 graduate of Jacksonville High School. He first farmed, then joined State Farm Insurance as an agent for 38 years, from 1960-1998, and received many trips and numerous awards for his performance. He was a member of Central Christian Church, was a Past Exalted Ruler of Elks Lodge 682, a Past President of the Jacksonville Country Club and was also active in the Jacksonville Chamber of Commerce. He was proud to be a lifelong resident of Jacksonville. He was an avid Cardinals baseball fan and his greatest joy was his children and grandchildren.
   Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. today at Cody & Son Memorial Home, with burial at Memorial Lawn Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Elks Youth Baseball.
