Beardstown; was born in Simpson County, Ky., June 10, 1823. His parents, Peter and Christina Dick, were natives of North Carolina, and are both deceased; they had a family of eight children-five boys and three girls; his father was a farmer. James A. attended school in his native county, and afterward in Sangamon and Cass Counties, of this State, receiving but a limited education. He began life as a farmer, and has since followed that occupation. He was married in this county Oct. 7, 1845, to Mary Bowen; born in Monroe County, O., Sept. 27, 1819; daughter of Jeremiah an Ellen Bowen; from this marriage they have had the following children: Samuel (deceased), Ellen, Nancy (deceased), Amanda (deceased), James M., Mary A. and William F. Mr. Dick was elected Sheriff of this county in 1856, and served two years; was re-elected in 1864, and again served two years. He has been School Director and Road Supervisor; and is a member of Ark Lodge No. 23 A. F. and A. M. in Beardstown; he is a Democrat. Dick Bowen = Simpson-KY NC Sangamon-IL Monroe-OH
