Illinois: History of Cass County, Illinois, ed. William Henry Perrin. O. L. Baskin & Co. Historical Publishers, Chicago, 1882. Cass County. JEREMIAH W. DAVIS, deceased. Reference to the prominent and highly industrious class of the citizens of Cass County would be incomplete without a brief mention of the active career of Jeremiah W. Davis, deceased. He was born in Greene County, Ky., Sept. 5, 1816. He was brought to Illinois by his parents, who settled in Cass County about the year 1829. His early life was spent in receiving a limited common school education, and assisting in tilling the home farm. At the age of twenty years, he left his home and embarked on life's rugged pathway, as a farmer, continuing the occupation to the time of his death, which occurred in 1863. He was married March 10, 1836, to Miss Cassandra E. Gunn, who bore him nine children, of whom four are now living, viz.: Jesse A., born Jan. 28, 1842; John B., Feb. 10, 1852; Jemima M., April 26, 1846; and Jeremiah W., Sept. 15, 1854. Mr. Davis commenced in gaining a good property. At the time of his death he was the owner of 1,000 acres of good land. Such, very briefly, is the career of one who through life was highly energetic and progressive, and whose many excellent qualities of head and heart enabled him to gather about him an unusually large number of friends.
