Stephen Douglas Garman, one of the eight children of Levi and Susannah Garman was born June 1, 1861, in Brookville, Ill., September 6, 1882.  He was married to Miss Mary Caroline Hershey at Haldine, Ill.  Immediately folling the wedding Mr. Garman entered the mercantile business in Polo, Ill.  In 1904 he filed on his homestead in this community which was then a newly opened project.  He brought his family to Caldwell to make their home until the fall of 1907 when they came to Fargo where they have lived continuously since that time, with the exception of four years from 1922-1926 when they made their home in Caldwell while Mr. Garman was assessor for Canyon county.
In his youth Mr. Garman was a member of the English Lutheran church and at the time of his death was a member of the Assembly of God of Caldwell.  He took a keen interest in community affairs and was a strong supporter of many local undertakings.
Mr. Garman was the father of five children, the eldest of whom, Charles, died in infancy.  The surviving children are Merritt S. of LaVerne, Calif.;  Grover E. of Hood River, Ore.;  Russell H. of Wilder, and Mrs. G. T. Leslie of Bluefield, W Va.  Mrs. Garman and 11 grandchildren and one great grandchild also survive.
Mr. Garman's children arrived here before his death and all were present at the funeral.
