___________
Lauri S. Manning, 27, died
from the affects of a broken neck at Memorial hospital last Thursday
afternoon at 6:15 o'clock. The accident took place Tuesday
when he dived off a bridge into shallow water in Jordan river.
Lauri was an employee at the Super-Service station at
Arthur street and South Ninth avenue, and was helping his brother,
Fred Manning, move to Jordan Valley last Tuesday. The water
seemed so inviting when they rerached the Jordan river in the
afternoon that the two Manning brothers and Paul and Maurice
Robbins, who were with them, decided to go in swimming. The
water looked deep under the bridge, Fred manning said later, and
Lauri dived off the bridge. The other three men in the party
thought little of it when he did not come up immediately to the
surface, as the young amn was an expert swimmer, and they thought he
was swimming under the water.
Failed to Come to Surface
They decided to
investigate, however, when the unfortunate swimmer failed to come up
in a reasonable length of time. They reached the vicinity
where he had dived in just as he come up with both hands above his
head. Rescuing him before he sand again, they took him to the
river bank. He seemed to be unable to move any part of his
body.
He was carried to the truck and driven to Jordan
Valley, but wa brought back Wednesday to Caldwell and placed in the
hospital, where it was found his neck had been broken.
