Services for John Tuning, 92, of Caldwell Route 1,
a retired blacksmith, who died Saturday in his home, will be
conducted at the Greenleaf Friends Church at 10:30 a.m.
Thursday. The Rev. Randall Emery of the Whitney Bench Friends
Church will officiate. Interment will be at Greenleaf under
direction of Peckham-Dakan-Davis Chapel.
Mr. Tuning was born Dec. 31, 1871, in Pleasant
Plain, Iowa, and moved with his family and baby sister in a
covered wagon to Allen, Neb., when he was three years of age.
He began his education in a log schoolhouse at Waterbury,
Neb. He was married March 6, 1894, in Ponca, Neb., to Martha
Presnall.
A blacksmith for 65 years, he owned and operated
his own shop in Greenleaf for 31 years, prior to retiring in
1953. He and Mrs. Tuning lived in Entiat, Wash., and Gerrald
County, S D., prior to coming to Greenleaf on March 10, 1922.
Mrs. Tuning died Oct. 19, 1952.
He was a member of the Friends Church.
Surviving are six sons, Walter and Jess, both of
Caldwell, Harley of Greenleaf, the Rev. E. J. Tuning of
Sprague River, Ore., Theodore of Meadows and Ray Tuning of
Kamiah; three daughters, Mrs. Olive Piersall of Caldwell, Mrs.
Viola Fleming of Lancaster, Calif., and Mrs. Bethel Cronrath
of Nampa; 26 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren, and one
great-great-grandchild. A daughter, Florence Lucile, died in
infancy Sept. 22, 1901. |
