John Laca, 93, of Parma, formerly of Ontario, died Thursday, Nov. 28 1996, at a Caldwell hospital.  Vigil with Rosary will be 7 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 3, at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, Ontario.  Liturgy of Christian burial will be 10 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 4, also at Blessed Sacrament with Father Enrique Terriquez of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Caldwell, presiding.  Burial will be at Parma Cemetery at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 4.  Services are under the direction of Ontario’s Lienkaemper Chapel.
     John was born Dec. 28, 1902, at Ondorroa, Spain, a son of Jose Maria and Maria Farate Laca.  He came to Westfall, Oregon, when he was 17 to be a sheepherder for Rufino Arrien.  He returned to Spain in 1931.  On Nov. 14, 1932, he married Gregoria Osa at Begonia, Spain.  They returned to Westfall with a 3-year-old daughter, Angela, to herd sheep again for Mr. Arrien.  Later a son, Julian, was born.  John was later employed by Vicente Mendiola and the family moved to Ontario, where they lived most of their lives, except for a few years in McDermitt, Nevada and New Plymouth, Idaho.  John purchased a farm west of Cairo Junction in 1948, and farmed the land until he retired.  In 1988 Gregoria and John moved to Parma where they would be close to their son, Julian and family.  He was known to the grandchildren as Po Po.
     Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Angela and Frank Good of Sutherlin, Oregon; a son and daughter-in-law, Julian and Eileen Laca of Parma; seven grandchildren with spouses, Steve Good and Greg Good of Sutherlin, Nancy and John Kiesewetter of Eugene, Oregon, John  Laca of Boise, Angela Laca of Pullman, Washington, Marcy and Mark Few of Spokane, Washington,  Christina and Gary Van Tol of Ontario; a great-granson, Carson Kiesewetter; one brother and five sisters, all of Vizcaya, Spain, and numerous other relatives.
     He was preceded in death by his wife Gregoria, one brother and two sisters.  Memorials may be made to Columbia West Valley Hospice or the Ontario Basque Club in care of Lienkaemper Chapel, P.O. Box 970, Ontario, Oregon, 97914.  Visitation will be from 3 to 5 p.m. Tuesday at Ontario’s Lienkaemper Chapel.
