Vernis "Mike" Powell was born on
October 12, 1911, at Genesee, Idaho, to parents, Robert and
Lena Geer Powell. He died on Sunday January 19, 1997, at
the Good Samaritan Center in Hermiston, Oregon, at the age of
85 years. The family moved to Cottage
Grove, Oregon, in December 1911 where Vernis lived his boyhood
and young adult years. He married
Eunice Holloway on June 7, 1934. He worked in Logging in
Drain, Cottage Grove, Blue River, and South Umpqua areas until
1949. They moved to Homedale, Idaho, to
farm. In 1975 he sold the farm and moved to Caldwell,
Idaho. They moved to Cottage Grove, Oregon, in 1986, and
to Hermiston, Oregon, in 1995. He is
survived by his wife, Eunice of Hermiston; son, Robert Powell
of Umatilla, OR; daughters, Bonita Huff of Bruneau, Idaho, and
Marilyn Wellems of Rockville, Maryland; 11 grandchildren; 12
great-grandchildren; two sisters and one brother.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Maxine; brother Joseph,
and a grandson, Steven. Funeral
services will be Friday, January 24, 1997, at 11 a.m. at the
Dakan Funeral Chapel in Caldwell, Idaho. Burial will
follow in the Wilder Cemetery in Wilder, Idaho. Memorial
contributions to the Good Samaritan Center in Hermiston. Burns
