George H. Phelps, 91, of Middleton,
died Monday, April 13, 1992, at the Caldwell hospital, of
natural causes. Memorial services will be held at 11:30
a.m. Saturday, April 18, 1992, at the Dakan Funeral Chapel,
Caldwell. Rev. George D. Godfrey of Caldwell will
officiate. A cremation will precede the services with a
private inurnment at the Middleton Cemetery.
George was born at West Plains, MO, on January 17, 1901, to
William Lewis and Edith Rose Phelps. The family moved to
Idaho in 1902. George attended school in Boise, and then
the University of Idaho. He went to Washington, D.C., as
an aid to Sen. Borah. He married Lucille Kline in 1922.
They had a son, Bill, and were later divorced. He
returned to Idaho and married Gertrude Oylear in 1930, who was
the mother of Barb. Gertrude passed away in 1962.
He later married Innes Wilkins in 1985. She died in
1992. He worked at the Barber Mill and then during the
depression worked at various CCC Camps in the area. He
then went to work for Boise Cascade in Emmett. He was
relocated to Eugene, OR, in 1945, retiring from U.S. Plywood
in 1969, and returning to Idaho to enjoy the "farm."
George was first of all a "people person". He disliked no one,
delighted in the company of friends old and new, and was
always charitable in his judgment of others. He enjoyed
a good meal, loved the outdoors and happily served his fellows
in union activities, and later in the Senior Citizens.
To him a person was a person, regardless of social standing.
He was never too busy to answer a question, help a neighbor,
or just talk. He was interested and pleased to hear
about the latest grandchild of even the most casual
acquaintance. He never failed to say "thank you" or
"well done" and had a way of making a person feel that any
little thing he did was really important. He treated
everyone as an equal, and never talked down to anyone
regardless of age. The needs and feelings of those around him
came first.
He is survived by a son,
Bill Phelps of Virginia; and a daughter, Barb Babcock of
Middleton; grandchildren, Larry, Jim, and Mike Phelps of
Virginia, Pegi Powell of Massachusetts, and Margie Huddleston
of Middleton; 4 great-grandchildren, 3 in Virginia and 1 in
Massachusetts.
The family suggests that
memorials be made to the Caldwell Senior Citizens Center, 1009
Everett, Caldwell, Idaho 83605.
