James L. Payne
James L. (Roy) Payne, 82, of Middleton, pioneer resident of
Idaho and early day freighter and construction worker, died
yesterday in a local hospital.
Mr.
Payne was born Feb. 29, 1880, in Panora, Iowa, and came to
the Middleton area with his parents as a child. He
attended Middleton and Central Park schools and freighted
with a team and wagon into Silver City. He helped
build Arrowrock Dam and Lake Lowell and also helped on the
construction of the old interurban lines between Boise and
Caldwell. He was married Dec. 24, 1905, in Middleton
to Maud Jarvis. A son, Cecil Payne, died Jan. 23,
1923.
He was a member of
Middleton Lodge No, 52, IOOF, of which he was past noble
grand and district deputy grand master. He attended
the Middleton Baptist Church.
Surviving in addition to Mrs. Payne are three sons, Boyd and
Howard, both of Boise, and Elvin Payne of Fruitland; six
daughters, Mrs. Gertrude Ditton of Payette, Mrs. Lola Wayt
of Elgin, Ore., Mrs. Helen Davis of Meridian, Mrs. Jessie
Nau of Fruitland, Mrs. Ileda Fouraker of Lewiston and Mrs.
Freda Long of Mountain Home; a brother, Milton E. Payne of
Caldwell; 22 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Services will be conducted at the
Peckham-Dakan-Davis Chapel at 2 p.m. tomorrow. The
Rev. Tom Starr of Payette will officiate. Interment
will be at Middleton.
