Peter E. Johnson, 89,
112 Smith St., Nampa,
who died Sunday at his home following an extended illness,
will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at the
Nampa
L.D.S. Stake
Center. Officiating will
be Bishop Roscoe Luekenga of the
Nampa
Fourth Ward
L.D.S. Church.
Interment will be in
Kohlerlawn
Cemetery. Friends may call
at the Alsip Chapel until noon Thursday.
He was born Jan. 28, 1877, at Dodgeville,
Wis., and was raised at
Salem, Utah. He attended schools at Salem. He was married to
Margaret Sabin Aug. 10, 1904, in the
Salt
Lake Temple
at Salt Lake City, Utah. Following their marriage, they lived at
Salem and then at Blackfoot and Paul, before coming
to Nampa
in 1916. He
farmed east of Nampa in the Greenhurst Community and In 1931
he purchased the Mutual Coal Company in partnership with Lewis
Ord. In 1941 he entered into partnership with his son, Lee
Johnson, in the same business. Mr. Johnson retired from the
business in 1946. In 1947, he was elected mayor of Nampa and served in that
capacity until 1951. He served as Bishop of the Nampa Ward, L.D.S. Church
from 1924 to 1926. He served as Bishop of the Nampa Second
Ward from 1926 to 1938, and built the present chapel. He also
served as Nampa Stake president from 1938 to 1943. He was
Bishop of Paul Ward from 1915 to 1916.
He was
preceded in death by his first wife, Margaret, Sept. 6, 1961.
He was later married to Ethel Hanks Feb. 24, 1962. He was a
former member of the Nampa Chamber of Commerce and former
member of the Kiwanis Club. He was a member of the
Nampa
Fourth Ward
L.D.S. Church.
He also served on an L.D.S. mission to the southwestern states
from 1901 to 1903.
Surviving are his wife; two sons, Clifford L. Johnson of
Cambridge and William Lee Johnson of Caldwell; two daughters, Mrs. Blanche Inama of Twin Falls, and Mrs. Ruth Abbott of Seattle, Wash.;
one brother, Hyrum Johnson of Paul; 14 grandchildren and 23
great-grandchildren. |
