 BOISE VALLEY PIONEER
        DIES AT MIDDLETON   

    John B. Smith of Middleton, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Maybee in Middleton, yesterday morning of dropsy.  Mr. Smith was a pioneer.  Leaves five children, two boys, and three girls.  He had made his home with Mrs. Maybee for some time.
    Funeral will be held this afternoon under the direction of the Jones Furniture and Undertaking company.

 IS BURIED 

J. B. Smith Made Overland Trip by Ox Team in 1864

    MIDDLETON, Jan. 18, - The funeral of John B. Smith who died here at the home of his daughter, Thursday, was held in the I. O. O. F. hall yesterday afternoon, Dr. W. J. Boone of Caldwell, conducting the services.
    Mr. Smith was born in Iowa nearly 72 years ago.  He was among the earliest settlers in this section of Idaho, having come across the plains from Iowa to this state in 1864.  He was accompanied by his wife and the trip overland was made by ox train.  They first settled in the Boise basin, later moved to the Weiser valley and then to the Bruneau valley, and in 1875 located on a homestead adjoining what is now the village of Middleton.  Deceased was the father of Mrs. Lamper of Star, Mrs. J. H. Mabee of Middleton, Mrs. Ira White, who resides sough of town, Charles S. Smith of Jordan Valley and Ed Smith of Boise.
