'C.K.' Smitherman

     Charlton "C.K." Smitherman, 74, of Caldwell, died Wednesday, Jan. 27, 1993, at the Caldwell hospital from progressive heart failure.
    Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Jan. 29, at the Greenleaf Friends Church, Greenleaf.  Rev. Butch Hart of the Caldwell Friends Church will officiate.  Interment will follow at the Greenleaf Cemetery, under the direction of Flahiff Funeral Chapel, Caldwell.
    C.K. was born July 11, 1918, at Haviland, Kan., a son of David Franklin and Lida Kendall Smitherman.  He was reared and educated in Haviland, graduating from Friends Academy there.  He attended Friends Bible College in Haviland.  C.K. married Lenore Hughes on April 5, 1941, at Booker, Texas.  The couple moved to Newberg, Ore., where he attended George Fox College, receiving his B.A.  He graduated from Linfield College in McMinnville, Ore., receiving his Masters in Education.  Mr. Smitherman was a teacher and administrator in Kansas and Oregon until 1954 when the couple moved to Greenleaf where he was principal at the Greenleaf Friends Academy from 1954 until 1962.  He was then principal of Lincoln School in Caldwell for 18 years until his retirement in 1980. During his retirement years he and his wife enjoyed spending time with his family and wintering with friends in Yuma, Ariz.
    Mr. Smitherman was a member of the Caldwell Friends Church.
    Survivors include his wife, Lenore; a son and daughter-in-law, Ken and Karen Smitherman of Edmonds, Wash.; a daughter and son-in-law, Jacque and Howard Mylander of Caldwell; a daughter and son-in-law, Joy and James Lehman of Caldwell; a son and daughter-in-law, David and Cheryl Smitherman of Caldwell; 15 grandchildren; two great-grand-children; a brother and sister-in-law, David F. and Ruth Smitherman of Haviland, Kan.
    The family suggests memorials be given to the Greenleaf Friends Academy, Greenleaf.
    Friends may call today from 4 until 8 p.m. at the Flahiff Funeral Chapel, Caldwell.
