Rev. Sam R. Hendrix was know for his gentleness and loving manner.  He served in the Christian ministry throughout the last half of his life.  Sam died in his home on Tuesday, Nov. 5, 1996.  He would have celebrated his 90th birthday in January.  Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday Nov. 9th at Dakan Funeral Chapel.  Officiating will be Rev. Harry L. Granger of the First Baptist Church of Emmett, Rev. Zip Zediker of the Community Baptist Church in Arco, and Rev. Everett Berry, Ret.  Burial will follow at the Wilder Cemetery, where Sam will be interred beside his wife of 56 years, who died in March.
    Sam was born on January 29, 1907, in Lesley, Texas, and spent the first 36 years of his on the Hendrix family farm in Lesley.  He graduated from high school in Lakeview, Texas.  In 1944 Sam moved his family to a farm near Hotchkiss, Colorado, where they lived for 9 years.  At the age of 45, Sam felt called to enter the ministry.  He left farming behind and attended Ottawa University in Ottawa, Kansas, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Sociology.  Sam then earned his Master of Arts Degree in Theology at Berkeley Baptist Divinity School and was ordained in Berkeley, California.  
    Rev. Hendrix pastored churches in Jerome and Wilder, ID, Point Richmond and El Sobrante, CA., and served as an assistant minister at MacArthur Community Church in San Pablo, CA., before retiring and settling in Medford, Oregon, where he was an active member of the Eastwood Baptist Church. As a retiree, he served for several years in the Ministers at Large program and was interim pastor at churches in Idaho, Nevada, Washington and Montana.  One of those churches was the Memorial Park Baptist Church in Caldwell where he and his wife returned as members in the last years of their lives.  
    Sam returned to the full time ministry for five years at the Golden Gate Baptist Church in Wilder before his final retirement in 1994.  He and his wife moved to Logan Park Apartments in Caldwell and he became an active member, substitute minister and Sunday School teacher at the Memorial Park Baptist Church.  Sam and his wife, Edith, resided together at Logan Park Apartments until her death.  He continued to live there, among friends, enjoying the caring community until his death.
    A loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather, Sam is survived by four daughters, Mary Ann Thurmond and her husband , Tom of Vacaville, CA, Nedra Abers and her husband, lmants of Novato, CA., Vicki Lyon and her husband, Richard of Wilder and Sue Hendrix of Homedale. He is also survived by 10 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren and two stepgreat-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
    He was preceded in death by one brother and four sisters. Memorials may be made to the American Baptist Convention, c/o First Baptist Church, 126 S.
