|Submitter: William H. "Bill" Adams||HAMPTON, Reuben R. |
Reuben Rogers HAMPTON was born and raised in eastern Tennessee, near
the Cumberland Gap. The issue of slavery in the 1850s split many
families and his was no exception. His sisters Sarah (Hampton) INGRAM,
Amy (Hampton) WALKER, and Thinza (Hampton) HUTSON moved to Page Co.,
Iowa in 1857. In 1860, he moved his family to Danville, IN where he
had relatives, then about 1869 he moved on to Page Co., Iowa, where
his sisters lived with their husbands. Reuben found the sod too tough
to bust and the prairie full of rattlesnakes. The rattlesnakes there
were so plentiful that they had to wrap the horses legs with sacks to
protect them while plowing. At the end of each furrow they had to
stop, remove the snakes whose fangs were caught in the burlap, and
kill them, at least that was the story. The stop in Iowa may have been
intended as permanent or it may have just been a long visit.
Undoubtedly, his Uncle Charles MERRITT, who had moved to California in
1851, had written letters back to William MERRITT and Reuben Hampton
extolling California to them. Most likely that is why Reuben chose to
settle his family in the Napa Valley sometime between 1871 and 1878. I
would like any information on their stay in Page Co. and would like to

Posted: Sun, October 09, 2011, Ar: 11:05:56AM PSTime
I pulled up some family tree data from the HANDORF family the other evening while playing on my computer.
I am a decendent of Jennie (HANDORF) LAWSON (my grandmother). She was also related to the Earl Annans (George Annans father). Earls mother , I'll call her Aunt Settie (SNYDER) ANNAN was my grandmothers aunt. This is the way she has always been referred to . . She and my Great grandmother HANDORF were sisters. Mary (SNYDER) HANDORF was the oldest[1.] of the SNYDER family and Settie was the baby of the family. there being 11 Snyder children. They farmed and grew up in the vicinity of the Polsley cemetery (Just a little west and south)
My great grandfather was Rudolph HANDORF but went by "Fred" (his middle name.) He came to the US with only 2 sisters and maybe 2 cousins from Oldenberg Germany. in the mid 1800. His 2 sisters were:
"Aunt Annie" Anna "Marie Marguerite Elizabeth HANDORF, who married Herman MULLER. They had 2 children Henry Muller and Emma Muller Rope. Henry had 4sons and Emma had 3 sons.
Catherine E. "Mary" HANDORF who was called "Aunt Mary" was married to John DRACE. Their only daugher passed away at an early age and so they had no decendents.
My recollection was that they helped to finance the St Pauls Lutheran Church in Yorktown. There was a placque over the entrance to the church naming them as big donors. The church is gone now being destroyed by fire about 20 years ago.
The other 2 you have listed as coming to the US were cousins and also also settled in and around Clarinda.
They were Herman Henry HANDORF, (who was also in the military at one time. My aunt Lizzie always wanted a flower put on his grave at memorial day. (my sister and I continue that tradition) and
Lucetta HANDORF. In your record you have them listed as 6 brothers and sisters. which is incorrect.
Rudolph HANDORF, had 6 children -- 1. Mary Driftmier, 2. Herman HANDORF, 3. Settie Driftmier, 4. Elizabeth HANDORF, 5. Jennie Lawson, and 6. Frederick HANDORF. (You have them in the wrong birth order. Jennie and Elizabeth are turned around)
Mary Driftmier had 3 children, Bertha Greer (Raymond,) Wilma (Beryl) Strong, and Rudolph (Helen)
Herman had 4 children-- Ruth (Ray) Polsley, Beulah ( single) Howard, (unknown) and Everett.(unknown) Settie Driftmier had 9 children, -- Vera(Ray) Hayes, Lois (Raymond), Ward (Sadie) Leslie (single) Netha (single) Mark (unknown) Gerald (single) Mabel (Kendall) Terrell, Dale (Jean). Elizabeth HANDORF (single) Jennie Lawson had 5 children -- Infant daugher, Ruby (Frank) Floerchinger, Ada (Ted) Howard, James Bernard (Gertrude) and Clyde Richard (Garnette) Clyde and Garnette were my parents. Frederick had 5 children. Frederick (Lu

HILL, "near shanbaugh (or clarinda)" 03 Aug. 1883.
She married Guy Amos Remington, b. 31 Aug. 1880 'near Shambaugh,

Guy lists the same location of birth, probably on nearby farms that were
somewhere between Shambaugh and Clarinda. I do not (yet) know the date

area, I would guess that they were married in this area.

Paul, I would like to know who is responsible for the page at
as I believe I am a relative. My 'linkage' is at fourth generation, where Moses J. Hoskins marries Rachael (EDWARDS), producing four children. The daughter of this union, named 'Deltla' I believe to be my grandmother
Estella (HOSKINS) Gibson with a mislabeled first name. The dates, ages and names are all agree with what I know of her and her family. I attempting to obtain further substantiation.
I knew my greatgrandmother Hoskins when I was a 6 year old and under boy and recall her dying at 104+ years. She lived in Coin proper at that time.
I have never really done any genealogy work, some on the immediate family and other branches of it. I am not sure if this note has a point or not but thought I'd let you know a few of 'her' people were around.
I found the site by doing a Google search on 'Moses J. Hoskins' and you popped up.

Paul, The wedding date and bridegroom name 'Elmer' agree with my information, additionally my sister could recall two of Estellas' siblings' names.
I believe it is a match. As I had mentioned previously I have not done much genealogy, a very little.
Elmer and Estella (Hoskins) GIBSON had six children so there is a great deal of information. I have data on many of the children/spouses but that is about it. The information is not currently organized in any sort of way, no software, just scraps of data here and there.
My question is how do you want the information?
In something created by a program or just written down?
If a program what kind(s)? What about pictures?
Do you want them also? Or would you prefer more of an informational format such as the Hoskins page? See paragraph #2, above.

If you can send info in a .TXT (ASSCI) format like that on the HOSKINS page I will then format in the the HTML format.
