THE WESTWARD EXPANSION OF THE 1850'S
Shortly after the restoration of peace in 1815, following the War of 1812 and the Napoleonic Wars, normal trade resumed and travel once more became possible. Posters, distributed in the eastern states and in Europe, spurred thousands to head west. People traveling toward the low-priced farm lands, used river boat as far as possible, and made the rest of the journey by covered wagons. Robert M. WILSON and his family were one of these early Pioneer's, after living in Fountain Co., IN. for some 10 years in 1852 they traveled to the vicinity of Clearmont, Nodaway County, Missouri, where Robert M. WILSON ran a "Flouring Mill" [REF:#6.] Then later on to Page County, Iowa, before Mar 1855, based on twin daughter's MARSALE & MATILDA WILSON being born in Amity Township, Page Co., Iowa in March 9, 1855.
This 1855 date is also consistant with his brother John,1 WILSON, See Bio Note!

Robert M. WILSON, age 39 (Census taker listed 42, b. 1818 ? ..prs) and wife Sarah (PUGH) WILSON, age 40 can be found in the 1860, Census for Amity Twp., Page Co., with the Post Office listing of College Springs; Dwelling number 693. Robert M. WILSON was listed as Head of Household, but a Farm Labor, HIRAM R. HILL, was listed as Property Owner. (See 160 acres of NE 1/4 of Section 13, Amity Twp., Page Co., IA. ..prs) Dwelling No. 692 was AMOUS B. & SYLVIA SONMERS and Dwelling No. 694 was HIRAM's brother BENJAIMEN, age 35 of New York and Wife ANN (Unknown) HILL's property. Mrs. Sarah (PUGH) WILSON was 40 years of age, and was helping run the farm. By now the WILSON family had gotten larger, Son ABRAHAM WILSON was 17, still attended school and doing farm chores; Daughter MARY ELIZABETH WILSON age 15, attended school and was helping her mother in the kitchen; Son EVAN WILSON was 13 attending school; Son JAMES H. WILSON was a11y attending school. Daughter MARTHA WILSON was 9 attending school; They were in School District #5, which one must assume they were attending the Walcott School House located about 2 miles in the censter of Section 14, Amity Twp. One of the twin Daughters MATILDA WILSON, b. 09 March 1855 had died 15 Apr. 1855, after only 1 month, and 6 days. The other twin daughter MARSALE WILSON was 5 years old and getting into mischief. Robert M. and Sarah (PUGH) WILSON had their 4th. son MILLER WILSON born on the 10 Feb. 1859, but died 7 months and 13 days later on 23 Sep. 1859, the second infant to die to this strong pioneer family. both are bured in the Davis Cemetery, East River Twp.
