 Who on March 28th, 1987, lived 201 N. Blossom, Shenandoah, Iowa 51601; Phone 712/246-3980
and was the only living descendent who, I talked to, that could remembered Isaac MANNASMITH.  Lee MANNASMITH told this writer the following stories. Unfortunately I did not have a recorder to save it in his own words, but I would like to put it in print. This is in the same order as was told to me. Paul R. Sarrett, Jr.
Oral Report, of Lee MANNASMITH, age 88yrs - March 28, 1987
...reported that Isaac was a sheep herder in Montana, during the summer months. Grandfather Isaac MANNASMITH, according to Lee, had a violent temper and in his later years he stayed with one of his children, and would move on to another child when ever anything would upset him. Lee tells of a story when he was a young lad. He and several other boys were throwing rocks at the "Outhouse" that Isaac happened to be occupying at the time. Isaac came out of there in a rage of temper, gathered his things and moved on to his daughters home...

...Lee, said that his father "Willy" MANNASMITH worked for the SNYDERS (Fred & Sarah A. (Runyon) as well as other families when he was a young man, along with his sisters (Alice (Mannasmith) THRAPP & Cora B. (Mannasmith) WILSON...

...told the story when his mother (Etta (Snyder) Mannasmith) had to go to Montana for her health for a couple of years. The twins were two years old (about 1903-4) then. His GrandFather Isaac MANNASMITH was herding sheep in Montana at the time and Lee has a gold watch Isaac gave to him, which Isaac got from some rancher at the time for some of his services...

...on this trip to Montana the family decided they wanted to go to Yellowstone Park and got in the covered wagon, crossed the river at Cody, Wyoming and headed into and up into the mountains, however the altitude started bothering his mother (Etta (Snyder) Mannasmith) and they had to head back. They got caught in a sandstorm and so had to tie the wagon down and at that time one of the twins fell into a catus plant. Lee said his mother used to have a diary, which is now gone, but remembers her telling about having to pluck the catus thorns from the rear of the two year old twin....

...related about his father, "Willy" MANNASMITH collecting Poll Taxes and Lee and his older brother Guy operating a team to plow roads with and then having to pick corn in the snow..

...said one evening at supper Guy and Lee were complaining about having to pick corn in the snow and "Willy" said "if you think it is so tough, you should go out on your own and try to make a living as I had to when I was young". Lee said Guy left thereafter, joined the Army in WWI and went to France. Lee still has all of the letters Guy wrote from France..

...said when Isaac MANNASMITH got mad at the outhouse incident, he immediately went in the house, gathered his things, walked three miles to Coin, got on a Burlington train and went to Bancroft, Nebraska to his daughter (Alice (Mannasmith) THRAPP) house.

MANNASMITH wins Red Oak award
LARRY MANNASMITH, vocal music teacher in Red Oak schools, has been named "Citizen of the Month" in Red Oak. The award, sponsored by Red Oak Express and the Red Oak Rotary Club, was presented at the Rotary luncheon on last Tuesday.
He was the first recipient to receive two separate nominations for the honor. MANNASMITH started a group called the "Mini-Singers" when he started teaching in 1971. These students have become a popular singing group through-out Southwest Iowa, performing at numerous functions during the year. In 1985 the "Mini-Singers" were invited to perform at Disney World in Florida and this past summer they traveled to Washington D. C. where they sang on the steps of the Capitol. The high school chorus has received I ratings at state level for several years and this year has been invited to AK-SAR- BEN to be a part of a special chorus in March.
LARRY, son of WILLIAM "BILL" ANDREW Jr. and DOROTHY (DOWELL) MANNASMITH of Coin, Iowa graduated from South Page High School in 1967 and received his degree from Northwest Missouri State University (NWMSU) in 1971. He did his practice teaching at Shenandoah High School and begin teaching in Red Oak in the fall of 1971 at the Jr. high level. In 1979 he accepted the high school vocal position. LARRY and his wife RHONDA sing at weddings and funerals in the area. They are members of the Red Oak Presbyterian church where LARRY is choir director and organist and RHONDA is a Deacon and Sunday School teacher. They have two daughters, VANESSA, 11 and HILARY, 8. MANNASMITH is a member of the Iowa Choral Directors Association and serves as a music judge for contest throughout Nebraska, Iowa and Missouri....
