Books Helen Jean LINDLEY's Girlhood
Born to Mabel Duncan LINDLEY and George LINDLEY on the 21st day of December in 1930. The youngest of 9 children, she grew up in a home that was almost transient. Traveling whenever necessary to find work, her family lived at various times all over the state of Iowa, Missouri, and North Dakota. When she was 10 years old, her brother Philip died of cancer in August of 1941 at the age of 14. Jean completed the required eight grades of school before moving into her own apartment at the age of 14.
"I was born in Clarenda, Iowa. They say that mom put the dinner on for all eight kids and went across the street to the neighbor's house and had me. It must not have been too difficult. When I was 10 years old, I got my first job selling sodas.
"I lived at home off and on until I was 13 or 14. We moved around a lot. We had two double beds in one room and six of us slept in there, three in each bed. It wasn't too bad. When you wanted to turn over you would just say we're going to turn over, and you would all turn over at the same time so nobody would lose their covers.
"When I was 14, I moved to Harlan, Iowa, where I got an apartment with my sister Lois. I worked as a waitress until I was 15 and Lois got married--she was 16 years old. Then I rented a room from a little old lady. I paid $12.50 a month for rent. This was in Shenandoah where I was working in the nursery. When they laid me off, I went that same afternoon to the hospital and got a job as a nurse's aid. I never had trouble getting jobs.
"My father worked at the nursery for a while and then he worked at a mental hospital. We lived in a small house for awhile and walked three or four miles to school. He worked for a farmer then, and we moved to Yorktown, Iowa.
"Then Philip got cancer, so we moved to Iowa City to be near the University Hospital, and that is how we ended up there. Cancer was real terminal and they didn't know much about it then. One doctor had him drinking only distilled water. He had the best doctors, I think.
"Dad got a job at the Oliver plant when we moved to Iowa City, but he had to go to Charles City during World War II. They stopped building tractors and started building tanks or something. Mom started working at the hospital--she had always worked before the war. She cleaned houses, or did some kind of work. She never did stay at home when we came home from school, but she kept up with her housework.
"Women never made much money, but it was never hard to find a job. Mr brother worked in a C.C.C. camp. There just weren't any jobs during the depression. I know Mom used to take in laundry; she'd be ironing sometimes up to 12 or 1 o'clock at night. I used to do my school work at the table while she did the ironing. She would do that at night and then go clean house for a Jewish lady during the day. I don't know when she went to work. She was never there when I got up unless it was her day off, and even then she would be doing laundry. Some days she would do the laundry for the C.C.C. boys, hang it out and then take it down when she got home from work.
"Mom never liked school. She never thought it was important. She went all the way through finishing school and she didn't think anyone needed it. She was well educated, but dad quit school in the eighth grade. Mom used to help us with our school work.
"I was never really that close to her until I got married and started having babies. Then we started communicating better. When I was young I really wasn't close to anyone. I was kind of a loner. We all were, but for having 9 kids, no one got into any serious trouble. We were just poor, and it was bred into us to work, to make money. Kids in the family were expected to work. Our parents didn't buy us swing sets and things.
"My mother used to say that girls were just as bad then as they are today, but they kept pregnant girls in the house during the day and then went out at night when it was dark and nobody could see them. They hid them away. She told me that when I was a teenager. I don't think it's any different than it used to be except that it's in the papers more. It is public where it used to be kept hush-hush.
"I never had any reason to ask about any of that stuff. By the time I was 17 years old and interested, I was already married. I knew enough to behave myself. I was a good girl. Yea, I was one of the last. Women used to have kids one after another. You know it used to be a saying that God would tell you how many kids to have. So, if you got pregnant, it was just ordained that you would have that one too. Women just kept shelling them out.
