GLASGOW Family by Willial Helancthon GLASGOW who wrote,
"The History of the Reformed Presbyterian Church in America" in 1888.
My ancestry, so far as able to trace it, dates back to the sixteenth century, with their residence in GLASGOW, Scotland. The family name was Cameron, and during the dark days of persecution, found an asylum in the north of Ireland. Here they were known as the "GLASGOW people" because they came from the city of GLASGOW.

During the "Siege of Derry" they were of a military turn of mind and were in the army as officers and privates against King James. After the settlement of affairs at Londonderry and the discharge of the Army, some of them remained, and being joined by others of the same family during the persecution, they remained and established a home in the new country. "You GLASGOW Men" was a favorite and common expression and designated the Cameron soldiers.

This appellation was generally accepted, and gradually became adopted by the family, which for two hundred years has been the legal and accepted name of the family. The male members of the family were weavers, and in Ireland plied that trade and the vocation of farming. They were a large, strong, thrifty people, strong in body and strong in convictions. They were staunch Presbyterians, and perpetuated their religious customs in the land of thair adoption. Marrying in that country, they gradually separated and found different vocations, as well as scattered homes. For five generations at least the family history can be traced.

 First Generation!
My great-great-grandfather: Hugh,1 GLASGOW, b. 1724, was a native of the County of Tyrone, Ireland. When a young man he fell out with a neighbor, engaged in a personal combat in which he was the victor, but because of prosecution and the severe penalty, he fled to County of Derry. Being a weaver by trade, he found employment with one McCullough. He soon, however, fell in love with his host's charming daughter, [Wm. M. never mentions her given Name?] and they were happily married. To them was born three sons:
#1.1. John,1 GLASGOW
#1.2. Robert,1 GLASGOW, and
#1.3. Hugh,2 GLASGOW, b. 1753 m. Sarah BLAIR, 5Ch.

 Second Generation!
The youngest #3. Hugh,2 GLASGOW, was born 1753, married Miss Sallie BLAIR, in their native country, to whom were born [7 Ch.] five sons and two daughters, viz:
1.3.1. 1st Son: John,2 GLASGOW, m. Peninnah THOMAS, 8Ch.
1.3.2. 2nd Son: Clatworthy GLASGOW (commonly called "Tatty")
1.3.3. 3rd Son: Hugh,3 GLASGOW (twin) and
1.3.4. 1st Dau: Nancy GLASGOW (twin), lived to be eighty-eight, and both died in the same year.
(Hugh,3 was an exceedingly large and corpulent man, and became so useless by his enormity that he was derricked in and out of bed and spent his leisure time in reading his Bible; also,
1.3.5. 4th Son: Alexander,1 GLASGOW;
1.3.6. 2nd Dau: Mary GLASGOW; and
1.3.7. 5th Son: Robert,2 GLASGOW.

The family emigrated to America in August, 1796, and landed at New Castle, Delaware. Upon their arrival they were accosted and reproachfully called "Irishmen", which they indignantly denied, but were "Scotchmen", as the "Irish" were Catholics and the Scotch of Ireland were Protestants. They found a resting place in York County, Pennsylvania, about five miles from Little York. They remained there about five years, [1801] and migrated to Washington County, where they remained a few months and then permanent settled in Deer Creek Township, Allegheny Co., Pennsylvania about sixteen [16] miles northeast of Pittsburgh. Here they bought a farm of 106 acres and moved upon it in March 1803.
The family were members of the Presbyterian Church in their native country, but coming to this country, they joined the "Associate Reformed Church".

 Third Generation!
#1.3.1. John,2 GLASGOW, the oldest son of this family, married Miss Peninnah THOMAS, who was a native of the Redstone district near the Forks of the Yough. Their meeting was on this wise. The young man, who had been reared in the Presbyterian and Associate Reformed church, walked from Deer Creek to the Forks of the Yough to attend a Communion dispensed by the Revs. John BLACK and Samuel B. WYLIE. Here he connected with the Covenanter Church. At this same Communion came on foot a charming maiden from the same community, whose father was a Presbyterian Elder, and she also was convinced and joined the Covenanter Church. Between these young persons, meeting at the Lord's Table for the first time, sprung up an acquaintance that ripened into love and culminated in marriage in 1804.
To #1.3.1. John,2 GLASGOW & Peninnah THOMAS were born eight children, four boys and four girls, four right-handed and four left-handed, viz:
 Fourth Generation!
     1.3.1.1 1st Son: Hugh,4 GLASGOW,
     1.3.1.2 2nd Son: Alexander,2 GLASGOW, b. 1807~1857 50yrs, m. c1831 Miss Sarah TAGGART, 10Ch.
     1.3.1.3 1st Dau: Sarah GLASGOW,

     1.3.1.5 4th Son: Robert,3 GLASGOW,
     1.3.1.6 2nd Dau: Nancy GLASGOW,
     1.3.1.7 3rd Dau: Mary GLASGOW,
     1.3.1.8 4th Dau: Amy GLASGOW,
all of whom became members of the Covenanter Church.

#1.3.1.4. Moses GLASGOW, the third son and fourth child, was born on the paternal farm near Bakerstown, Allegheny Co., PA, October 29, 1809. At seventeen years of age he left the farm and went to Pittsburgh to learn a trade. His father put him under the care of Mr. Phillip MOWEY, who saw that he attended church and society meetings. He became an apprentice to Rice and Beatty, blacksmiths, on Penn Ave., near 8th St. and attended the Oak Alley Covenanter Church under Dr. John BLACK. In the fall of 1830, he went to Cincinnati and there remained but a few months, and then went on horseback to visit his Uncle Moses THOMAS, near Danville, Illinois, on the Vermillion River. In the fall of 1831, he returned to Cincinnati, and began the carpenter trade with his brothers Hugh,4 and Robert,3 GLASGOW. In March 1832, he made a visit to his native place in Pennsylvania, and returned to Cincinnati in June. In the fall at 1834, he took shipping on the "Paragon" for Columbia, Arkansas, where he built cotton gins on the Mississippi where he remained in all five years or until June 1839, when from New Orleans he returned to Cincinnati, Ohio on Nov 05, 1839 he married first Miss Mary Jane PIERCE, by Rev. Samuel McKINNEY on Walt St., Cincinnati, Ohio. Mrs. Mary J. (Pierce) GLASGOW died in March 1846, leaving two small children. In 1848, he married second to Mrs Martha (Warden) THOMPSON, of Pittsburgh, by Rev. Sproull, to whom were born three girls and one boy, viz:

     1.3.1.4.4 Only Son: William Melanchthon GLASGOW, b. 1856 <---This 1888 Author!
Came to Northwood in the fall of 1850, and in 1857 moved to farm one and a half miles west of Belle Centre. In March 1863, removed to Belle Centre, where the family has since remained.

Grandfather John,2 GLASGOW, born County Derry, Ireland, near Portglenone, April 28, 1780. Parents belong to Synod of Ulster. Came to America in August 1796. Joined the Covenanter Church in 1804. Ordained a valiant elder in Pine Creek Congregation in 1822, where, he served until his death. He stood faithfully to the principles of the church in 1833. Even while his pastor and the majority of the people abandoned them. He was faithful in the discharge of every official, paremtal and Christian duty. He died after severe suffering from acute "rheumatism" at his home near Bakerstown, Allegheny Co., PA, August 28, 1840, and his remains lie buried in the old Pine Creek Church yard awaiting the resurrection.

Robert H. GLASGOW, was murdered, A group of boys in the neighborhood became involved in stealing, it began with chickens to roast, then to pigs, hiding them in a cave and selling them. Robert H. GLASGOW was involved but was determined to break with the gang. The others were afraid that he would reveal to authorities what he knew of the evil which had been going on. He was apparently confronted by the boys, near some hay stacks along the creek west of the Rock Bottom schoolhouse. His body was found there and he was buried in Sharon Cemetery. After Mr. James HENDERSON found a club covered with blood, John C. GLASGOW, (brother of Robert) doubted his alleged accidental death and insisted the body be disinterred. One member of the gang was present and was trembling continually and when the body was produced, examined and a skull fracture was discovered, the fellow confessed. The assailant was arrested, convicted. and served a sentence.
