Settlement in Ohio:
The BUCKEYE STATE is 41,222 Square Miles, the Capital is Columbus,
Motto is "With God, All Things Are Possible". Was entered
into the Union, Mar. 01, 1803; ranked 17th. Ohio is the nation's
3rd greatest industrial state; it ranks among the wealthier states
in livestock and crop receipts, and is a leader in output of lime,
coal, and coke. LaSalle first visited the Ohio area in 1669; American
furtraders arrived, beginning in 1685. The French and Indians sought
to drive the traders and trappers out. During the Revolution Virginians
defeated the Indians in 1774, but hostilities were renewed in 1777.
The region became U.S. territory after the Revolution. First organized
settlement was at Marietta in 1788. Indian warfare ended with Anthony
Wayne's victory at Fallen Timbers in 1794. In the War of 1812 Oliver
H. Perry's victory on Lake Erie and William H. Harrison's invasion
of Canada in 1813 ended British incursions.

boarding the Southwest corner of Harrison County, Ohio. It is 6 miles

Platting of Londonderry Township:
Londondery Twp. (Twp-11-North, Range-6-West) was part of the "
Seven Ranges surveyed 1785-1787; Sold 1796, Available to Anyone just East of the
"Military Lands, Surveyed 1797-1799, Sold 1798; Available to Soldiers of the
American Revolutaiorary War, later Available to Anyone" It consist of the typical 36
(640 acres) Sections, but not assigned in the typical 1 thru 36 left to right.
See: 1870 Londonderry Twp. Sections.
The only village that was platted in this township was Londonderry.
It was platted by ROBERT WILKINS, emigated from Northern Ireland
in 1807), on 19 Aug. 1815, on NW 1/4, NW 1/4 of Section 20, northwestern
part of the township. It never grew to a place of more importance
than a country hamlet, with a post- office and a store and a
small collection of houses. The town of Londonderry was laid out
with 56 lots, and a 10 rod square center, called the
"Diamond", which is not visible at the present day. Many
of the settlers followed ROBERT WILKINS from Northern Ireland,
and when the town was laid out in 1815 they called it
"Londonderry" in honor or for some fancied resemblance to
the city of that name in the Old Country. The Township of
Londonderry was not organized until 03 June 1816, which is
included in one of the "Seven Ranges" (surveyed 1783) of
land to which the Indian titles were extinguished by the treaty
of Fort Stanwix, 27 Oct. 1784, and when the land office was open
at Steubenville, Ohio. In 1801 the U. S. Government proceeded to
open these "Public Lands" to entry and settlement. As
emigrants from Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, Ireland and
Scotland were flocking into the country in great numbers. This
area was almost unbroken wilderness, abounding in wild game,
especially deer "bar," wolves and turkeys, which
constituted the early settlers their principal reliance for
subsistence. These settlers were very much annoyed by wolves,
which were not only numerous, but troublesome, and as the
Government paid a bounty of $4.00 for wolf scalps and the County
paid $2.00. The trapping for them was quite a business.

The Early Churches of Londonderry Township
Probably the first two churches in Lndonderry Township were the
"Guernsey Friend Church
near Smyrna and the "McCoy Methodist Church" in the southern part of the township.
The actual date of establishment of the early churches
is unknown. Dates of burials at the McCoy cemetery are as early as l8l6 and
as the Friends (early) did not use stones it is possible that they had burials
as early as this also... We do know that prior to building churches our ancestors met in hones for worship.
Three other churches were established about the same time in the early
1820's, these being different branches of the "Scottish Covenanter Church".
These were the "Associated Reformed Church", established by Dr. Samuel Findley,
on Miller's Run, (McKitrick of Logan Cemetery) about two miles east of Antrim.
A second church was the "Londonderry Associate Presbyterian Church".
The first building was located at the site of the
"Londonderry U.P. Cemetery" [now Sunset View Cemetery] just
south of the village of Londonderry.
The third church was the "Reformed Presbyterian Church [called Covenanters]
which was just north of Londonderry.
Add to these the regular Presbyterian churches at Antrim and Freeport and
you have four different branches of the Presbyterian Church which included
most of the Scotch/Irish settlers who came early to this area.
The "Miller Run Church" was discontinued at an early date and
became a part of the present Antrim United Presbyterian Church.
The early names listed in these cemeteries will give the reader an idea of just who these early settlers were.
The Miller Run church was also referred to as "The Tent"
The Londondeery Associate Presbyterian Church early shared a minister with
the Sharon Associate Church near Deersville.
The Rev. Andrew ISAAC was their first minister, coming to the two churchs on
Sep. 28, 1928.*
Rev. ISAAC and his wife, Jane and son William R. are buried in the Sunset View Cemetery.
In the year 1858, the Associated Reformed Presbyterian and the Associate Presbyterian united and formed the
United Presbyterian Church.
The Reformed Presbyterian Church, (Covenanters) did not join the other branches in forming the
United Presbyterian Church. The congregation of the Londonderry Church (Covenanters) continued
until after World War one and the coming of the Automobile and finally about c1923 they disbanded,
sold the church building and it was removed from the area where the cemetery remains.
Many of its members joined the United Presbyterian and some even became Methodists.
Listed among its members were BLACKWOODS, LOGANS, LOVE, HUTCHINSONS, MADDENS and MORRISONS.
The Londonderry United Presbyterian Church
In 1869 the Londonderry United Presbyterian Church [U.P] bought two lots in the west end of Londonderry
(The Brown Addition).
By l870 the church building which still stands was erected under a contract with
Cornelius TOIAND a local carpenter and builder.
In 1895 members on their roll as of April 1st totaled 112.
